ACTIVITY SHEET – 3 PERFORMANCE TASK 2

WEEK 4 Topic: NETWORK TOPOLOGY
I. DIRECTIONS: Complete the following worksheet. Identify each topology diagram by name and physical
characteristics associated with each topology.

Alternatively referred to as a
star network, star topology is
one of the most common
STAR network setups. In this
configuration, every node
connects to a central network
device, like a hub, switch, or
computer. The central
network device acts as a
server and the peripheral
devices act as clients. In a star
topology setup, either a
coaxial or RJ-45 network cable
is used, depending on the
type of network card installed
in each computer. The image
shows how this network
setup gets its name, as it is
shaped like a star.

Ring topology refers to a

specific kind of network setup
in which devices are
RING connected in a ring and pass
information to or from each
other according to their
adjacent proximity in the ring
structure. This type of
topology is highly efficient
and handles heavier loads
better than bus topology.

A ring topology may also be

called an active topology
because messages are passed
to each device in the ring.
Alternatively referred to as
line topology, bus topology is
a network setup where each
BUS computer and network device
is connected to a single cable
or backbone. Depending on
the type of computer network
card, a coaxial cable or an RJ-
45 network cable is used to
connect them together.

A mesh topology is a network

setup where each computer
and network device is
MESH interconnected with one
another. This topology setup
allows for most transmissions
to be distributed even if one
of the connections goes
down. It is a topology
commonly used for wireless
networks.

A dual ring topology has two

rings instead of a single ring
as in ring topology. The two
DUAL RING rings are called as the
"primary ring" and the
"secondary ring". The
secondary ring provides
redundancy in case of a
failure in first ring, and also
can serve as an additional
data path.

A hybrid topology is a type

of network topology that uses
two or more differing network
HYBRID topologies. These topologies can
include a mix of bus topology,
mesh topology, ring topology,
star topology, and tree topology
