Discussion Two

Academic Eligibility- High school sports are supposed to be an addition to a student’s

educational experience outside of the classroom and academics. It creates a balance between the

student participating in a particular sport and giving an excellent academic performance. The ‘no

pass no play rule ensures that players do not participate in sports if they do not meet the set

academic standards (Morton, 1993). It also helps athletes who are seeking college scholarships

meet the standards required to join the NCAA center.

Transfer rules-The reasons why high school associations should have transfer rules are;

 To prevent students from transferring to a school that has a popular sports

program or a famous coach. It maintains the fair distribution of students across the

districts according to the funds allocated.

 To prevent coaches from hiring or enrolling students from other schools

as it affects the educational and social balance. According to Sawyer, curriculums do not

match up well enough for a smooth transition when changing schools (Sawyer, 2015).

Ethics-High school associations should evaluate the effect of the ‘no pass, no play rule,

and the transfer rules. For example, students who are struggling academically and sports are the

only things that keep them motivated to stay in school may drop out if they are not given a

chance to participate. If a family relocates to another district, the student may be forced to

transfer to another school. It is essential for high school associations to set up policies whose

results will be fair to all athlete students.

I agree with eligibility features because they will help and ensure the athlete students

benefit from both academics and sports in equal proportion and without unfairness.
