ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to improve the quality of coop that are made recently and

also encourage the farmers to practice chicken rearing that boost their livihood.

The improvement will allow farmers to have a better living stardard and also enable the

the government to improve people’s skills and create employment for the people living

unemployed.

In ancient time or days back coops were made without a draw and due to advanced

technology , the coops are now made with a draw to ease eggs collection without

damage. The improvement of a draw also saves time as it minimizes the collection of

chicken feces which is further used as a manure to improve soil fertility hence high yied

of food production in the country.

In conclusion, the advanced coops will enable the farmers to secure their eggs and

minimize theft cases in the society.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Suspended timber advanced coop with a draw is a project to be started by a group of students

after doing research and coming up with the correct conclusions and principles on chicken

housing

1.2 BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

A raised coop with a draw is the proposed project that was chosen to improve the quality and

uniqueness the other last failed project. A chicken coop is a shelter or house like structure for

chicks that is enclosed with plastic, metal bars or wine mesh. This keeps the chicken in

confinement and provides them with a safe and comfortable place as chickens are useful to

owners especially those living in urban areas.

1.3 PROBLEM STATEMENT

Chicken are useful and important domestic animals and chicks in several ways which including

food properties and livestock though the owners face a lot of challenges during their lifetime.

Here are some of the challenges that chicken might undergo when not properly treated and

enclosed.

i) CHICKEN URGE TO RUN AWAY

The escapists tendencies of chicken are more frequent in and out the coop since they don’t know

the exact people to cater for them and low friendship .This is in terms of lack of enough food in

their coop or too much tied up in the coop yet chicken need to refresh and jumps from one place

to the other
ii .CHICKEN FACING SEPARATION ANXIETY

As like humans chicken also suffer from the fear of separation. This is created when the coop

fabricated is too small to occupy all the chicken in the yard.

1.4 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY /GENERAL OBJECTIVE

The main objective of the study of project is to ensure that farmers and owners have enclosed

their chickens inside coops as this will prevent chicken from easy contacting of diseases from

the other free range chicken. It also enables owners to keep chickens in a better condition for

the purpose of security this might reduce the amount that would have been invested in employing

the security personnel.

1.5 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

The specific objectives of the project includes to:

(i) Determine the factor and prevalence of chickens’ mutability and mortality in breeding

coops in Kenya.

(ii) Materials and methods were selected at random and a questionnaire administered

this is to increase chicken rearing and practicing the natural security as the

government has improved on the production of chicks and encourage while

educating farmers to spend low cost of the food security purposes.

1.6 USE OF THE PROJECT
Outside coop houses are particularly designed to make use of exterior security purposes and to

shelter chicken as many animals in Kenya suffer from neglect, cruelty and abuse. The designer

has therefore decided to improve and support the live hood of the domestic chicken and after

them a conducive environment throughout the year as the designer has all the expense and

research skills to fabricate coops that are friendly to chicken in both hot summers and cold

winters.

1.7 IMPORTANCE OF THE PROJECT TO STUDENT

The raised chicken coop project enhanced creativity and innovation amongst learners as they

were able to make a unique suspended coop that are free and same from any danger that the

chicken might face during their lifetime .This makes them capable of starting their working

places after the learning period and employ other personnel thereby creating jobs and earning a

living to themselves and others.

1.8 LOCATION OF THE PROJECT

Coops should be located centrally in the farm yard where chicken are able to access and see

clearly of the both corners of the yard. The place should not be too hot nor too cold but need to

be comfortable with little chances of getting too hot or too cold especially directly from

sunlight or Rains. It’s also important to provide s the chicken with protection from the outside

element and also has sufficient space to ensure its comfort. The location of the coop is placed

centrally and near to the main building to prevent it from exposed wind and sunlight that might

affect the comfort of the chicken.

1.9 UNIQUENESS OF THE PROJECT IN RELATION TO THE EXISTING ONES
Since the project was already made times back and was not successful, the designer did research

on the modern coops rather than the old traditional coops that were used before. This modern

raised coop will able to separate older chicken from their young ones and regulating the

temperature in the coop depending on the age and gender of the chicken in the specified creates.

This will add attention to personality, electric taste and swagger. this unique do the chicken

coop’s are not just functional but very stylish and can make a chickens feel like they have their

own happy space but not an imposing steel traditional cage.

1.10 JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY

The reason why this research work was done or carried out was due to the problems that early

students’ learners made on the fabricating of the older project. This justification held temporary

or permanently in coops for a number of reasons not necessarily for the chicken benefits alone

but also to benefit the environments have been associated with poor welfare . So the priorities
for research and change cannot be understood unless the various aspect of the coop environment

is appreciated separately.

1.11 BENEFIT OF THE SOCIETY AND COUNTRY

Through chicken rearing in Kenya , many individuals have been through chicken rearing in

Kenya, many individuals have been employed in different unique coop that can support the

chicken generation as it creates employment to the skilled people in the society and earns them

a living through this project , the government will also be able to get revenue from the people

fabricating the coops when sold and exported to other countries

1.12 CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS

The main challenge that will affect the coop fabrication is the lack of enough raw materials

especially timber due to excess deforestation and wild animals that destroys timber this can be

corrected as the government projects the forested areas and encourages the people to practice in

Kenya.

CHAPTER TWO

2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW

Domestic chicken can be housed in a variety on confined condition including coops, shelter s and

laboratories. Concern over the well-being of a chicken housed in human care has prompted much

research in recent years into the enrichment of environments for chicken coop.

The implementation of these programs can reduce the negative effect of sheltering by improving

the life quality and decreasing unwanted behaviors and can increase the chances for adoption of
these chickens. The behaviors and it can increase the chances for adoption of these chickens. The

behavioral repertoire of the individual subjected to such programs is improved by encouraging

the expression of species specific manifestation by preventing, reducing or eliminating the

abnormal behavioral patterns such as stereotypes and also by increasing the ability of the animals

to cope with new situations (Wells, 2004)

Those chicken that have a better physical and psychological conditions are easier to care for

and give for adoption and they have a better welfare, Unfortunately, the chicken kept in some

shelters experience low level of human interaction despite the proofs that such interaction have.

Sleep, work, and the effects of shift work in drug detection chicken, cairns familiars (Adams and Johnson,

1994).

The impact on chicken being housed individually in coops has been studied extensively while

many studies reports chicken house in single coop experience high level of stress and

frustration, others have found no impact of long term on cortical level and behavior, although

fools for measuring affective states may limit the ability to measure this impact

Chicken are social birds which have strong inherent desire to interact with their social group

including human family members separation related behavioral signs in chicken result from a

strong social bond and hyper attachment between chicken and their owners. The sex , age,

breeds, sterilization status, medical diagnosis and level of pain of each chicken were not

considered for recruitment , since it was difficult to secure enough chickens that simultaneously

satisfied all of the requirements the effect of medical diagnosis ,level of pain showing slightly

increased in the volume or frequency from normal elimination in the view of the veterinarians

severe. However, the coop environment could lead to poor welfare and different stress handling

especially when subjected to novel stimuli. Therefore chicken should provide an opportunity to
investigate the effect of limited past experience with human affinitive and communicative signed

on the adult chickens’ behavior

The decrease of amount of interaction of the chicken with the same way according (Welker,

1961) familiarization is a direct consequences of habitualisation which shows the importance of

periodic replacement of objects during enrichment process. Some studies have demonstrated

small but measurable positive behavioral influence of a range of toys (Wells, 2004). This

indicates all the incidents of chicken habitual and being housed in the recent improved coops

(Adams and Johnson1994).

 Determining how long and how wide you want chicken’s house to be.

 Sketch the chicken’s house.

 Pick the good sport in your yard.

 Prepare the ground for your chicken’s house.

PART TWO
 Gathering the materials i.e. saw, claw hammers nails and electric drill.

 Buy wood.

 Decide the quality of roofing materials needed i.e. galvanized iron sheet.

 Pick the paint color to be used.

PART THREE
 Cut your wood unless you had it prepared at the store.

 Attach the base by using nails.

 Complete the frame to joint with the base.

 Build the roof by the use of frame and joint them with nails.

 Attach the plywood to the main frame and the roofing frame attaches the iron sheet to

cover the roof.

PART FOUR
 Putting finishing.

 Nailing on roofing material.

 Painting chicken’s house.

 Inspecting the chicken’s house that is after all the procedures has been followed and

the chicken has been constructed the checks on nails and screws on joints. If possible

shake it to check on the project.

3.2 DESIGN METHOD AND PROCEDURE OF FABRICATION

When designing the chicken house, there are some of the procedures and factors to consider for

the success of the coop as follows;

i. Location

Deciding on a location is an important step including a coop run because the place choosed will

contribute directly to the design of the structured and influence the choice of the material and the

method of construction in the producing the final products. A coop located away from the owners

house will have different features when connected directly to an attached garage and each location

has advantage and shortcomings that needs attention before the design and construction begin.

ii. Proper Materials

The materials on fabricating the coop should be of the required sizes as started by the

building code requirements as follows:

 Any outside coop run should be narrow, 48 inches long and 12 or more feet in as

the standard dimension. The reason for this dimension is to encourage chicken to

naturally excrete and defecate at the far away.

 The coop run floor should be designed with enough slops of water will run out to

avoid standing peddles. My coop floor is also tilted towards a hand – dug ( dry

well ) 48 inches wide by 3 feet deep positioned at the far end filled with 3 to 4

inches diameter stone aggregate. The purpose of the dry well is to have a place for

waste water to collect and to drain under the loose water rock where odor is

minimal and insects cannot get the residue of faces and urine.

iii. Floors and Walls

Concrete is the most common material for the floors on the coop but in this case it will be

fabricated out of plane boards that are easy to clean and sustain the room temperature. The

timbers are arranged in a sloppy manner that can make it easy and drain chicken wastes

and water during the cleaning of the coop floors. Floor covering such a foils are also

recommended during the winter season that will make the coop to remain worm and to

prevent the floor boards from rotting and wear out. This also helps in faster cleaning.

iv. Fencing Option

Chain links fencing for outside and inside coop runs has always been popular of its simple

installation, efficiency to use, long term divisibility and relatively low cost. But for the

raise coop, the materials used are the timber that are arranged parallel to each at the

interval of 12 inches away from the others. This allows air circulation in the coop and

passage of day light. This space can also enables the chickens’ to detect any danger and

movements from far. The internal walls are fixed with inch-light treated transparent plastic
that can allow in light but prevents the rain water to enter during the rainy seasons. The

walls are fixed with doors and ventilators from more air circulation, feeding of chicken

and admitting daylights.

v. Rooting

Chicken roofs are made of durables and quality materials such as pine, cedar, redwood

boards, chain links and iron sheets. The roof can either be flat roof, gabled, mansard but

the designer decided to use the gable roof since the place is cold and windy hence gable

roof can be essential to prevents all the problems. The covering should be made and

positioned in a way that it not allows rain to enter the floor.

vi. Storage Methods

Crating your chicken can be a peaceful experience for both you and the chicken if its done

correctly. This coop is stored outside in free ventilated centered areas due to the following

reasons:

i. Fresh air and bathroom access during long days. In outside open places, chicken

are able to get fresh air freely and easily accessibility when they are to be washed

and cleaning the coop.

ii. Comfortable housing for outdoor chicken. Outdoor chicken breeds tend to be

bigger and have heavier coats making it comfortable to live outside.

iii. Temperature solution to beat allergy season. Outside chikens are easy to regulate

the temperature of the coops making it to be conducive place for chikens to live.

This parents chicks from being sick and attacked by insect like fleas.
iv. Accommodating house guest who are not chicken loess. In some cases, there are

people who are allergic to chicken and this can make it more comfortable to them

when the coops are placed outdoor inside the main house.

CHAPTER FOUR

FINDINGS, DISCUSSION AND RESWULTS

This chapter mainly provides a summary of importance elements the major objectives of the coop

fabrication and the specified objectives, the methodology used and sometimes the findings of the

project:

The aim of the study was to determine the factor and prevalence of or chicken mutability

and mortality in breeding coops in Kenya. Materials and methods were selected at random and

questionnaires administered this to increase chicken rearing and practicing the natural security as

the government has improved on the production of chicken and encourage while educating

farmers to spend low cost on the food security purposes and practice in door chicken rearing.

The specific objectives of the study and finding of this projects was to ensure that farmers have

enclosed their chicken in the coops as to prevent free range chicken that can result into spreading

of diseases during matting with other chicken. This also makes chicken free from the people

living around the areas of chicken rearing

The method of fabricating the raised coop depends on the types of chicken to be reared,

the breads, and the quality of the coop and the uniqueness of the coops. This is done
systematically in a manner that can cater for the chicken coop conditions in both the adverse

weather condition and the good weather condition. Also best designing providing and protects the

chicken from being attack with winds, super wild animals, Pest and diseases.

4.1 FINDINGS
Through chicken rearing in Kenya, Scientist and researchers have come up, with different

findings attaining the succession of the quality of a good chicken coop.

. They established and implemented a number of guidelines and rules to be made on a chicken

coop so that all the finding must be correct and valid. Some of the finding on the chicken coop

includes:

Cleanliness

Hygiene is a number one priority see whether the coop is well lit , with all essential features and

arrangement it should be clean enough for the chicken to enjoy a comfortable stay. Checking this

is the only possible when you visit the facility physically. This way you can identify the problem

areas the unprofessional attitude of their services

Check the places Qualifications

Before making a final decision, determine whether the coop boarding facility should have

appropriate lances and certifications the working in the coops undertake specialized certificates

courses and training. So while leaving your chick with them, and his problems are taken care of

adequately.

Check the Interiors

The coop should be spacious for your chicken to sit and sleep. The members must ensure the

outmost convenience for the birds. This includes providing them with comfortable bedding and

food. The coop should be big so that your chicken can move around. It should also have proper

draining so that the sewage flows of the coop easily

Specialized Care

The decision of keeping chicks with the chicken day care service

Should not be a problematic for the owners. As professional worker in a coop service you should

take care of every chicken individually shower them with immense love, attention and affection.

There should be local veterinary services available throughout the day hence this gives owner a

peace of mind. The chicken should receive proper diet to keep them strong and energetic.

4.2: DISCUSSION
According to the finding that has been carried out by different specialist and researchers,

conclusions and gestures that the designer and the learners has to take in place as discussion is

done. This shows the compassion on which of the following findings are correct and should be

approved by the building code requirements and by use of builders, those compassions also

determines the different between the modern and traditional coop. Doctors and specialist are

therefore summarized the different findings in that any coop attaining all the qualifications hence

they make the chicks life more comfortable and friendly to the established and put in place.

4.3: Budget of Materials Used

The following are all the items and material needed for the successful fabrication of the raised

coop with a draw as shown below in the table.
