are important keys in reducing harm in the workplace. Furthermore, it lengthens the life of the
equipment.

Safekeeping of Supplies and Equipment


It is necessary to safekeep the supplies and equipment for the safety of personnel and
guests. Cleaning them properly will help eliminate the bacteria to grow right in the equipment.
As a housekeeper, you are in charge of the cleanliness not just of the room and the hotel
but also of the equipment you used. Since it is your responsibility which you must instil in your
mind, it is important to clean and store the equipment properly and make it a part of your
cleaning system. Maintaining the cleanliness equipment will produce a better cleaning result
and prolong the life of the equipment. The ultimate goal in cleaning is to remove the bacteria
and dirt in the premises and tools. Remember the following when you do safekeeping:
 Clean and store the equipment correctly after every use.
 Remove any liquids that may have been contaminated.
 Never put equipment away unless it's ready for the next day's use.
 Clean Specific Tools

There are different safekeeping needs appropriate for a certain tool or equipment. Let me give
you the general guidelines in safekeeping of these things.
Flammable Materials
Materials that are highly flammable require special handling. Gases such as propane
and butane must be kept in pressure-safe containers with appropriate labels and must be kept
in a separate, well-ventilated area. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Association,
flammable liquids such as gasoline and kerosene must be stored in approved containers
located away from other flammable materials. These can be stored only in a specially
constructed room that is able to contain a fire for one to two hours. Keep flammable materials
50 feet away from sources of heat or flame.
Chemicals and Other Hazardous Materials
All chemicals, including cleaning materials, should be kept in their original containers or
in properly labelled containers of an appropriate type. Every workplace that uses chemicals of
any type should have a book containing all material data safety sheets, and the book must be
kept where it is easily accessible. Chemicals must be stored where there is no public access
and where tipping or breaking can’t happen, such as secure shelves inside a locked cupboard.
The cupboard must be labelled with the type of materials it contains.
Machinery and Equipment
Machinery such as vacuums must be kept in a safe location where it is protected from
unauthorized access, weather and accidental damage. It must be kept away from driveways,
walkways and other areas where access is required. All equipment should be turned off when
not in use. Check for torn wires, if any are found, fix and or label it for repair.
Understanding the importance of safekeeping of tools and equipment can lessen the
hazard it may cause to the employees, guest and the building itself.General Rules in
the Use of Cleaning Equipment
1. Check electrical appliances and equipment before use. Check if there are frayed wires,
loose plugs ad connections. Never use any appliance that is defective.
2. Handle equipment with care and make sure it does not bump on hard surfaces.
3. Clean and store equipment in their custodial room immediately after use.
4. Empty dust bags of dry vacuum cleaners before they overload and after each use.
5. Follow manufacturer’s operating instruction.
6. Schedule a regular check-up of equipment to prevent serious breakdown.
7. To avoid electric shock or short circuit, do not expose equipment to rain or water. Store
them indoors to protect them from getting wet. Electrical equipment should never be
used in wet surfaces.
Thus, it is very important to consider safety in all aspects for the welfare of everyone in
the hotel.
