CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
Mastery of English is a knowledge requirement that must be mastered in
today's modern era in various fields, one of which is in the field of education,
namely learning English. English has been taught from elementary school to
college level. The current facts show that there is a change in the orientation of
higher education which no longer only produces smart graduates, but also can
apply their knowledge in people's lives. This certainly causes higher education
rivalry to become more stringent, so that universities are required to generate
graduates who are able to compete in the global world. To generate students who
are able to compete, students need to understand English as a whole which is built
through good references. If student references are limited, then their knowledge of
knowledge is also limited so that it can make it difficult to find various
informations. However, if the references are good and plentiful, then students can
dive into a variety of global information. Chomsky (2021) argues that language is
part of the mind and that reference is expressed according to the workings of the
human mind and cognitive system.
The education curriculum in Indonesia stipulates that English is a general
subject that must be followed by students, so that whatever major they take, all of
them continue to study English (Puspitasari, 2013). For this reason, it certainly
creates a gap between different materials and terms used in all majors in Higher
Education. For example, the understanding of the English language of medical
students and English education students of course different. So we need a
material, terms that are suitable and in line with the student's majors in order to
facilitate their understanding as a whole. Especially in science-based majors,
where they are required to do reports in English. If their understanding of English
is limited, it will certainly cause difficulties for them. Thus, learning a foreign
language is very beneficial for one's understanding for certain purposes (Yusroh,
2016).
The teaching of general English courses in Higher Education aims to assist
students in supporting English-language learning resources. Therefore, the
emphasis on mastering reading skills is more emphasized on students than other
skills (Nababan, 1984). Not only reading, but also they must understand the
meaning of the context and the content of the writing. The position of English as a
general subject also serves as a support for them when they have to read a lot of
journals or books that currently dominate published in English. Current digital
facts show that English is used as a medium for delivering various scientific
studies at the National and International levels.
Halu Oleo University is one of those who apply English courses as one of
the mandatory general courses in all majors. One of them is the Department of
Medicine. This department is certainly very familiar with the use of English
because most of their scientific research uses English. The application of this
general English course certainly creates a lot of different perceptions for every
medical student. Students who have good English skills will find it easy to carry
out education, apply for jobs, job promotions, find sources of income or continue
their education (Murray, 2016).
In addition, the position of English is very important for all students to
master if they want to gain wider knowledge and careers. Because English
language skills are not only for communication, socio-political, economic or
cultural needs, but also for scientific development, because most publications of
academic research results use English which is needed by students in finding
various sources of subjects they study in college. So for this reason, English
should be in accordance with the student's scientific field so that it can help them
in doing college assignments and help achieve careers in the world of work
(Yulientinah, 2020). Therefore, the presentation of material and the use of
teaching methods must be in accordance with the field of science of each student
(Aflah & Rahmani, 2018).
Motivation alone is not enough for students to improve their abilities, they
also need to be considered psychologically to analyze their difficulties and find
solutions according to the needs of their scientific field. Psychological attention is
meant here in the form of what they see and feel when learning and what they
think and understand when learning. To know this in depth, the first thing that
needs to be known is the student's perception of general English courses. Next is
material that is relevant to the suitability of their field of science which can be
known through the background of students' perceptions, their feelings and
expected skills. But in reality the material provided does not follow the level of
language mastered by students, so teachers also need to make adjustments to the
material according to students' abilities (McDonough, 2013). This needs to be
explored in depth so that the learning objectives of general English courses are in
accordance with the success of the material being taught.
In the initial interview study with several medical students, the authors
found that they programmed general English courses in semester 2 and the
material taught was based on TOEFL, where students were only given TOEFL
questions to work on. This learning approach is a new thing, but it is not yet
known in detail the responses and perceptions of students with this kind of
learning model. The fact that the author observes why it is very important for the
medical department to understand English is that the dynamics of research in the
medical world is very fast, so they are required to be able to update books and
journals in English which use a lot of different terms from general English. If this
is ignored, it will greatly affect the understanding of medical students' knowledge
and their learning outcomes. Of course this is a good gap to research because if
medical students are only directed to work on TOEFL-based questions, then this
is contrast to the purpose of implementing general courses in universities. In
addition, this research can also be very helpful for lecturers in terms of evaluating
learning and updating material or syllabus according to student needs. Because
English is not only fully borne by the lecturers, but there is also a supporting role
for learning in it (Bahri & Trisnawati, 2018).
Based on the description of the background above, the authors want to
examine how the perceptions of medical students at Halu Oleo University towards
TOEFL-based English general courses and from these perceptions will find out
where the difficulties they feel while programming these courses are through
questionnaires and interviews. This is important because students' perceptions of
TOEFL-based English general courses will affect their feelings and learning
outcomes. Understanding perception from a psychophysical perspective is giving
meaning to something that can be felt by humans, closely related to observation,
hearing, feeling (Slameto, 2010). What is received from the outside then enters
and is interpreted within us (input), it will produce a perception (output) of
something.
1. 2. Research Questions
1. What is the perception of medical students about general English courses
based on TOEFL?
2. What are the reasons students have this perception?

1.3. Objectives of the Research

The purpose of this study was to determine students' perceptions of
general TOEFL-based English courses and whether these courses were in
accordance with their learning desires or not.

1.4. Scope of the Study

The main focus of this research is to find out the perception of
medical students about TOEFL-based general English courses in their
majors. Medical students learn English only based on doing TOEFL
practice questions, but it is not known how they perceive it. It is suspected
that their perception is different about this. This is the main focus that must
be known through this research.

1. 5. The Significance of the Research

In the term of the significance of the study, there are two
significances, including theoretical and practical. Therefore, the researcher
hopes this study will be beneficial in theoretical and practical.
1.5.1. Theoretical
This research is expected to be useful in terms of developing
knowledge in terms of finding various sources of knowledge references in
English.
1.5.2. Practical
1. For academics, adding a reference source for further research for students
at Halu Oleo University, especially in the Department of English
Education
2. For parties related to lecturers and other researchers , become scientific
reference data to be developed more widely related to perceptions that
will give birth to an analysis of the learning needs of students who need
English as a supporting language.

1. 6. Definition of Key Terms

The researcher defines several keywords to help the reader
understand the focus of the research. The terms are :
1) Perception is an act of recognizing and interpreting sensory
information that is sensed by humans (input) which will produce a
picture of understanding about a particular thing through the stimulus
of nervous system signals (output) which is one form of basic
symptoms in the human psyche. Perception is a reaction to one's
perspective through external stimuli to give meaning to something that
can be felt (Jalaluddin, 2011).
2) General English for Purposes have the meaning that an
implementation of learning that is followed by all students together.
English for General Purposes (EGP) is intended as an evaluation
material that should be the main priority of any curriculum that
supports the existence of EGP as a general course in higher education
(Hutchinson & Waters, 1987). Each department in a college should
conduct a material review to see if the learning material fits the
department's unique goals. Because no matter how good the material,
it can hardly meet and satisfy different students with different needs,
goals, desires, learning styles, attitudes, talents, and cultural norms
(Tomlinson, 2006).
3) TOEFL is an English test that will test the English language skills of
students whose mother tongue is not English. TOEFL is a
standardized test to measure a person's English skills without being
directly related to the teaching and learning process.
4) Medical students are students who study medical science in
universities who follow the process of academic and professional
education to achieve competence and a doctor's degree.
CHAPTER II

LITERATURE REVIEW

2. 1. Perception
2. 1. 1. Definition of Perception
Referring to Jalaluddin (2011) perception is a reaction to a person's
perspective through external stimuli to give meaning to something that can be
sensed. The meaning referred to here is an understanding that is formed from the
beginning to get a stimulus from outside. Every human being has the same way of
thinking, the difference is the perception. This perception is born from the
references they have. If a person's references are few, then it is likely that the
resulting perception is also limited. A teapot filled with tea will only release tea
when it is poured into a glass, just like humans, it only releases what is inside
itself. In other words, humans can only produce something based on what is in
their minds. This thought is what triggers the birth of perception in humans.
Perception is one form of basic symptoms in the human soul that appears
in various fields, one of which is the field of education. It also includes memory,
thinking, intelligence, emotion and motivation. Sugihartono (2007) states that
human behavior is initially triggered by the senses that receive a stimulus from
outside and then the brain will interpret the stimulus. After that a perception was
born. So, this is one of the basic theories that cannot be denied, human perception
depends on many or few references that enter him. These references are entered
consciously by humans, then removed automatically through perception.
In line with this Slameto (2003) argues that perception is based on
processes involving the entry of messages or information in the human brain
through the intermediary of the human senses. Thus, perception relates to a
person's treatment of information about an object that enters him (he receives it).
The treatment process is related to interpreting the meaning, description or
interpretation of the object.
From the various opinions above regarding the definition of perception, it
can be said that perception is the basic way humans receive stimuli from outside
which are managed by the brain with the help of the senses and then different
perceptions are born, depending on each individual. However, this perception can
produce a unity of various individuals if bound by a good system rule. And this
perception cannot be separated from the few or many references that are managed
by individuals, because that will determine the weight of the references they issue.
The reason for the importance of knowing human perception is because it will be
seen and found how humans should behave and solutions to problems in their
environment.

2. 1. 2. Factors Affecting of Perception

There are various factors that influence a person's perception. This is
because external stimuli that enter through the five senses do not all have the same
appeal. According to Sugihartono (2007) perception is determined on several
factors as follows:
1. Culture. It can be said that a person's perception is closely related to the
culture he adheres to to interpret a message, object or environment. The
greater the differences between one culture and another, the greater the
difference in their perception of reality.
2. Experience. A person generally has experience with the object that has
been discussed. The more intensive the relationship between a person
and an object, the more experience he has. In certain cases, usually
experiences and relationships are not only experienced by one person,
but a group of people at once. Past experiences are also reinforced by
other information, such as information or events that hit the object.
3. Value Espoused. Value is an evaluative component that comes from
beliefs or beliefs that include usefulness, goodness, aesthetics, and
satisfaction. This value is normative, in the sense that it acts as a
standard for good and bad deeds, right and wrong, and so on. Basically
values are normative, they are stable and consistent at one point and are
not doubt.
4. Source of Informant that enters a person through the mass media or
from other people greatly influences the results of a person's perception.
Incoming information is one form of stimulation that enters someone
who attracts attention.

2. 1. 3. The Aspects of Perception

Perception covers attitudes when someone perceives an object. Walgito
(2004) states that perception has three main aspects namely cognitive, affective,
and conative or psychomotor aspects.
1. Cognitive aspects include components of knowledge, opinions, ways
people think or gain knowledge, experiences of people, and everything that
is obtained from the perceiving mind. In this study, students' cognitive
aspects refer to students' beliefs or knowledge about TOEFL-based general
English course
2. The affective aspect is an emotional response that expresses the degree of
individual preference for an entity. This aspect includes the components of
individual feelings and emotions towards certain objects, and everything
about the evaluation of both good and bad evaluations based on individual
emotional factors. Therefore, in this study affective teachers show
students' feelings or opinions about the TOEFL-based learning approach in
general English course
3. Conative or psychomotor aspects are verbal indications or typical
behavioral tendencies of a person. This aspect includes motivation,
attitudes, behavior, or individual activities based on their perception of an
object or situation. In this study, the psychomotor aspects of students relate
to previous student experiences about English in the learning process.
2. 1. 4. Types of Perception
There are two categories of perception: item perception (physical
environment) and individual human or group perception. Perception of humans is
more difficult and abstract because humans are dynamic. According to Mulyana
(2015) these two perceptions have differences, namely:
1. Perception of objects through physical symbols, while against humans is
symbolized by verbal or non-verbal. Humans are harder than other objects
2. Perceptions of objects respond to external properties, while towards
humans respond to external and internal characteristics (feelings, hopes,
thoughts, and so on)
3. Objects do not react, while humans react. In the sense that objects are
static, while humans are dynamic. Therefore, the perception of humans can
change according to time and conditions, faster than objects.

2. 1. 5. Kinds of Perception
Then according to Irwanto (2002) perceptions are divided into two types,
namely positive perceptions and negative perceptions.

1. Positive perception comes from an individual's assessment of an object or

information with a positive opinion because it is in accordance with what
the individual expects from an object
2. Negative perception is an individual's perception of an object or
information with a negative opinion, this is because it is contrary to what
the individual expects of the object of perception

2. 2. Definition of English General for Purposes

General courses are subjects whose learning implementation is followed by
all students in all tertiary study programs. General courses have the aim of
forming students as prospective undergraduates who are not only qualified in the
field of their study program, but are also equipped with scientific basics that form
a good mental and personality. The point is that students are able to apply the
knowledge gained in general courses in the community or the world of work
(Ahmadi, 2015).
English for General Purposes (EGP) is intended as a material evaluation that
must be the main priority of any curriculum that supports the existence of EGP as
a general course in higher education. Evaluation of materials should be carried out
to assess the suitability of learning materials with the specific objectives of the
material for each department in universities (Hutchinson & Waters, 1989).
Because regardless of how good the content of the material, it cannot fully satisfy
many students who have different needs, goals, ambitions, learning styles,
attitudes, abilities, and cultural norms (Tomlinson, 2006). This is based on the fact
that every child, regardless of the same society, has unique thoughts, feelings and
beliefs. This is because each individual student thinks, feels, and believes in
different ways, regardless of the identical culture to which they belong. The
reason why textbooks need to be evaluated is because they may be suitable and
ideal in certain situations and with certain students, but may be useless in different
situations (Richards, 2007).
English for General Purposes (EGP) aims to develop reading strategies and
skills in students which aims to prepare students to overcome the problems of
their disciplines. The English for General Courses course aims to prepare students
to face their educational and work needs (Zohrabi, 2015). Because this general
course is only programmed in one semester, the emphasis on mastering reading
skills is more emphasized on students than other skills (Nababan, 1984). Not only
reading, but also they must understand the meaning of the context and the content
of the writing.
The feature of English for General Purposes is concentrates on teaching
English in general. Its main aim is to provide learners with a course that may face
their drive to know and understand a particular language. The study on EGP also
found that students' views of learning English and their learning behavior were
influenced by the rules for placement of English skills. Advanced and
intermediate level students believe that the ability to read authentic textbooks of
their field is important; whereas elementary level students emphasize the need to
understand the method of reading well in English (Chien & Hsu, 2011).
In terms of teaching English for General Course, it is also important to have
instructional material. Instructional material are defined as resources that organize
and support teaching, such as textbooks, assignments, and additional resources
(Remillard & Heck, 2014). Instructional materials are based on materials and
facilities that can be used to facilitate, encourage, improve and promote teaching
and learning activities that can be used to facilitate effective instruction. It
demonstrates how to systematically design and use learning and total
communication processes and use human and non-human resources to produce
more meaningful and effective instruction. They are human and non-human
materials that teachers use to convey information to students in their classrooms.

2. 3. Review of Previous Studies

There are several types of research related to this research. Raynesa Noor
Emiliasari and E. Kosmajadi once conducted a study entitled Students'
Perceptions of Learning English. This research aims to examine descriptively
about students' perceptions of learning English. The research method used is
descriptive quantitative method with survey techniques. The population consists
of students who have attended English courses for the last two years, with a total
sampling technique. The data source is primary data which is analyzed using a
descriptive statistical approach to determine the frequency of answers and the
percentage. The results of this study prove that students' perceptions of learning
English are less than optimal, still considered heavy, the environment and
facilities are also inadequate. The results of this study are supported by research
facts that show students' low perceptions of learning English (Emiliasari, 2019).
The second study comes from a thesis entitled Students' Perceptions in the
Use of English in the Department of Islamic Broadcasting Communication,
Faculty of Da'wah and Communication Sciences, Raden Intan State Islamic
University, Lampung written by Nurul Husna Afrilia. He aims to analyze student
perceptions of the use of English in the Islamic Broadcasting Communications
department at the campus. Data collection methods used are: interviews,
observation and documentation. The research conducted is qualitative. The
population used in this study were all students of the 2017/2018 class, consisting
of 7 classes totaling 250 students. While the sample used is using a simple random
sample or simple random sampling (Afrilia, 2020).
The third research is from the research journal Ristia Wahyuningsih, entitled
Analysis of Non-English Students' Perceptions of the Need for English in the
World of Work. This study aims to determine the perception of non-English
students on the importance of English in the world of work. This study uses
descriptive research methods with quantitative and qualitative approaches and
uses perception theory to analyze the data. Data collection techniques using
surveys and interviews. The results of this study indicate that 95% of 100 students
consider English important in the world of work and 5% consider it unimportant.
English is considered important because it is used for communication in work
with foreign people. Meanwhile, English is considered unimportant because the
type of work varies, so not all jobs require English language skills. The
perceptions conveyed are influenced by the environment, needs, experiences and
insights (Wahyuningsih, Kusuma & Listyanti, 2021).
Based on the research described above, the authors found that there were
differences between this study and the previous one. The most prominent
difference is that previous research is only to find out students' perceptions of
learning English, while this study examines how students' perceptions of general
English courses are applied based on TOEFL and from this research can be used
as a reference for compiling a syllabus or lecture material in accordance with
Perception desires achieved by students are in accordance with the majors they are
involved in. Basically, when knowing human perception, the next step is to
produce the solutions needed so that the perception does not become a continuous
problem for the person concerned. So, this is the basic gap and difference from
previous studies. In addition, no previous research has discussed student
perceptions based on the material being taught, in this study the material in
question is TOEFL-based.
CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

3.1. Research Design

The research design used in this study is survey method with a quantitative
design. Researchers conduct a survey first of the majors that are suitable for
research, then conducted a survey of the students, then conducted a survey of the
English material being taught. After all the data supporting the initial survey has
been collected, the researcher will conduct a survey to conduct a survey of
students' perceptions of the general English course based on TOEFL they have
programmed. It is suspected that students' perceptions are different from the
learning objectives of general English courses in universities. So, for this reason,
the researcher chose a survey method with a quantitative design to see student
perceptions. The survey method, according to Sugiyono (2018) is a quantitative
research technique used to gather information on past or current views, opinions,
traits, behavior, and variable relationships as well as to test various hypotheses
about sociological and psychological factors samples obtained from a certain
demographic.
The tool used to view the results of the student perception survey is the
way researchers distribute online questionnaires to medical students at Halu Oleo
University. Data from participants who filled out the questionnaire will be the
initial data and will be followed up through interviews with students who filled
out the questionnaire to find out the reason. Quantitative research is a type of
research that produces results that can be obtained using statistical or
measurement processes for this type of research. This quantitative method focuses
on the symptoms that have certain traits, or variables, in everyday human
existence. In a quantitative approach, objective theory is used to study the nature
of the connection between variables. In his book Quantitative and Qualitative
Research Methodology, Kasiram (2008) defines quantitative research as a method
of knowledge discovery that use data in the form of numbers as a tool to examine
information on what you want to know.
Glance (2006) suggests that quantitative research techniques are created
with the aim of generalizing certain social phenomena and offering causal
justification. On the other hand, the best source for understanding a particular
social process from the perspective of the person concerned is qualitative research
methodologies. In addition, data from qualitative interviews will help to explain
the motives behind contradictory student responses. Simultaneously, they increase
validity and allow more insight into the problem being studied. To explore more
students' perceptions of General Purpose English, a mixed methodological
approach, using quantitative data (obtained from questionnaire results) and
qualitative narrative (obtained through face-to-face interviews) was adopted in
this study.

3.2. Population and Sample

3.2.1. Population
Referring to the opinion Sugiyono (2018) the population is the entire
element that will be used as a generalization area. The point is that the majority of
the population in an area will be a general benchmark that describes their
condition. Elements of this population is the entire subject to be measured. In this
study, 2 classes in the class of 2021 majoring in medicine at Halu Oleo University
were used, with a total of 127 people.
3.2.2. Sample
Based on theory Sugiyono (2018) the sample is part of the number and
characteristics possessed by the population. Simple random sampling technique
will be used in this study and randomly selected from the total population. The
sample chosen is from a population of 127 students with a 95% confidence level
and an error rate of 5%. This determination is based on the Slovin formula
developed by Isac and Michael (Sujarweni, 2014).
The formula used is:
N
n=
1+ N e 2
In the formula, it looks like formula elements such as n, N, and e. Here is
the explanation:
n = number of samples sought
N = total population
e = tolerable margin of error.

Based on the Slovin formula above, the sample that meets the confidence
level of the total population is 115 people.

3.3. Instruments of the Research

The questionnaire will be used in this study as an instrument. This
questionnaire was adapted from Zohrabi (2015) and (Nurdiawati, 2019). The
purpose of giving this questionnaire was to reveal their perception of the
suitability of the material and the difficulties they felt during general English
lectures. So to determine the attitudes and perceptions of respondents, researchers
used a Likert scale. Referring on theory Sugiyono (2018) the Likert scale is used
to measure attitudes, opinions and perceptions of a group of people about social
phenomena. In the answer, each instrument item has a weighted value as table 1.1.
following :

Table 1.1. Scoring for the answers to the questionnaire

No. Statement Code Score

1. Sangat Setuju SS 4

2. Setuju S 3

3. Tidak Setuju ST 2

4. Sangat Tidak Setuju STS 1

Source: (Sugiyono, 2018)

Sometimes in several instruments, the researcher used five scale of Likert

Scale which put Undecided option among Agree and Disagree. But, in this
instrument, the researcher did not use Undecided option because it will create a
double meaning. Undecided can mean the respondents have not been able to
provide answers or decisions. It could also mean that the respondents are neutral
or even hesitant. To sum up, the researcher chose four scale of Likert scale to
obtain accurate research data because undecided option can have a double
meaning.

In a Likert scale, variables will be measured and translated into variable

indicators. Then it is used as a starting point for compiling instrument items which
can be in the form of questions or statements. Then the statement will be
processed to produce a conclusion. In determining the results of respondents'
answers, it is necessary to interpret numbers. This interpretation number is used in
every quantitative study to process raw data to get results whether the respondent
strongly agrees, agrees, disagrees or strongly disagrees with what is in the
statement. Data from participants who fill out the questionnaire will be the initial
data and will answer the first research question.
Then the data will be followed up through interviews with students who
fill out questionnaires to examine the reasons students experience difficulties
while programming courses. To support the questionnaire items, interviews were
conducted with a select number of students who filled out the questionnaire. The
reason for conducting interviews is to talk directly with students in order to find
out their opinion about the perception as a whole which is based on the
questionnaire questions. This interview question is a follow-up action from the
instrument in the form of a questionnaire to find out why students find it difficult
and what they want during learning. The interview questions consisted of general
and detailed items about their perceptions during the general English course
program. The purpose of this interview is none other than to clearly reveal their
thoughts and feelings that they really feel naturally without coercion. This follow-
up interview will answer the second research question.
3.5. Technique of Data Collection
Sugiyono (2018) stated that there are three main things that will affect the
quality of research data, namely: the quality of research instruments, data
collection and data analysis. The type of data used in this study is primary data,
namely original data collected by researchers to answer the existing problem
formulation. Data collection techniques in this study are: (a) giving a
questionnaire, this technique is giving a set of questions to respondents to answer
which is done by distributing a list of written questions. This data collection is
based on the respondents' responses to the statements submitted by the researcher;
(b) conducting interviews with students who answered the questionnaire and
experienced difficulties during learning (Sugiyono 2018). The purpose of this
interview is to explore the reasons for student perceptions in detail and explain
what students want about it.

3.6. Technique of Data Analysis

Questionnaire data will be analyzed through SPSS. However, interview
data were analyzed manually. To analyze the interview data, the information
obtained was compiled based on relevant themes and topics, then the themes in
question were separated and reduced. After that, students' answers were compared
and contrasted with the existing questionnaire data. The data processing will be
analyzed using descriptive analysis method to describe the various characteristics
of the data from the sample. The reason the researcher chose a qualitative
descriptive research design to analyze the interview data obtained was because the
researcher wanted to describe the situation that would be observed in the field
more specifically and transparently to explain the situation that occurred with the
support of a literature study so as to further strengthen the researcher's analysis in
making a conclusion. Referring to Arikunto (2006) quantitative descriptive
research method is a method that aims to create a description or description of a
situation objectively by using numbers, starting from data collection, data
interpretation and display and results.
