In studying Ergonomics, it is very important to consider the factors that may affect the workers to avoid

accidents and to increase productivity. Lighting from natural and/or artificial sources needs to be provided for the

employees to ensure working conditions that are safe and adequate for work type being performed. According to

OSH standards, “All places where persons work or pass or may have to work or pass in emergencies, shall be

provided during time of use with adequate natural lighting or artificial lighting or both, suitable for the operation

and the special type of work performed.” Poor illumination at work can cause eye strain, fatigue, headaches,

tension, and accidents, from workers perspective. Too much light, on the other hand, can cause safety and health

issues such as "glare" headaches and stress. Both can result in errors, poor quality, and low productivity at work.

These statements show how important measuring the right level of luminance in the workplace.

A light meter is a highly sensitive device that is designed to measure the intensity of light that falls on the surface

(incident light) or is reflected from a surface (reflective light). This equipment calculates the lux and footcandles

in a specific range that it receives thru its censor. Aside from ergonomics study, it is also being used in photography

and cinematography.

PARTS OF THE LIGHT METER

How to use light meter

• Press the power button to turn the light meter on.

• Remove the censor cover.

• Place the light meter onto the surface you wish to observe.

• Be mindful of the factors that may affect the reading of the censor. (e.g., Shadow)

• The display monitor will show the readings of luminance.

• MAX/MIN button displays minimum, and maximum collected readings. One press shows maximum, and

second shows minimum.

• HOLD button makes the display freeze the current measurement on the screen. Press again to unfreeze

the measurement.

• Fc/lx button changes the unit of measurement between footcandles and lux.

• RANGE button enables the user to select the preferred measuring range or allow the meter to

automatically select the range.

For identifying the proper amount of luminance, we can use the OSH standard for the specific work type being

perform in the workplace we are observing.

The table shows the standards of lighting intensity for different operations of work environment:
