COURSE RADIATION
SUBJECT CODE: BIO 118 TOTAL NUMBER OF PAGES: 16
TITLE: BIOLOGY
REVISION PREREQUISITE
0 / 10-22-2019 CREDIT UNITS / CONTACT HOURS:
NO./DATE /S: None
SUBJECT PLACEMENT: Lecture: 3 units / 3 hours per week
Third Year, Second Semester Laboratory: 1 unit / 3 hours per week
COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The course describes the effects of ionizing radiation on living organisms, from cells to animals. The lectures begin with a brief physical description of the various types of ionizing radiation,
the electromagnetic spectrum, and how radiation interacts with atoms. The early physical events produce ionizations and yield chemical radicals that can damage important biological
molecules such as water and DNA, leading to either cellular repair or death. The course emphasizes radiation damage to cells and organs, with practical illustrations of applications to cancer
therapy. It also reviews the risk-benefit rationale used in government regulations for the controlled use of radiation in research and medicine.

COURSE OUTCOMES (CO):

CO1 Explain the basics of ionizing radiation biological effects and risks from cellular to human.
CO2 Summarize the factors that affect the dose-effect relationship.
CO3 Summarize acute and late effects from ionizing radiation.
CO4 Plan and implement radiation protection education of researchers and health professionals
GRADING SYSTEM

The grade for the entire course will be comprised of the following: Cumulative Summation
The grade per grading period will be comprised of the following: Lecture = 60%, Laboratory = 40%
