SUBJECT CODE: Ecology 10 COURSE TITLE: Environmental Science TOTAL NUMBER OF PAGES: 8
REVISION PREREQUISITE/
CREDIT UNITS / CONTACT HOURS:
NO./DATE S:
SUBJECT PLACEMENT: Lecture: 3units/3hours per week

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Environmental Science is the study of interrelationships between human activities and the environment. Environmental Science is an unusual academic discipline in that it requires scientific knowledge about the natural world, as
well as an understanding about ways in which humans interact with the natural world. We examine effects of human actions on the environment, and the means by which policies, regulations, and decisions influence human actions. We also
examine human behavioral, cultural, and sociological interactions that affect the environment. Thus, the department is truly interdisciplinary and exemplifies the liberal arts approach to education.

Thus this course is designed to provide knowledge of the principles and concepts of human activities and their relation to their natural environment. There is emphasis on ecosystems, interactions, and anthropogenic activities and
their impact on the biosphere.

COURSE OUTCOMES (CO):

CO1 Develop basic scientific knowledge and insights on the principles that govern the interactions in the ecosystems and in order to explain that life is the result of the flow and integrated processes;

CO2 Infers and analyzes phenomena through scientific method;

CO3 Exhibit intellectual gratification that comes from the understanding of basic ecological principles by getting involved in eco-awareness programs;
CO 4 Comprehension on human actions and activities and their direct and indirect effects on nature;
CO5 Acquiring skills to help the concerned individuals in identifying and solving environmental problems;
CO6 Perform activities exhibiting competence , scientific attitude and critical thinking in promoting environmentalism and practice life-long commitment in the improvement of the biosphere by applying the knowledge gained through
promotion of earth-friendly habits.

CLASS POLICIES:
1. Short quizzes may be given before or after lecture-discussion during class schedule.
2. Long/Unit quizzes/exams usually cover previously discussed topics and shall be given before the start of the lecture during the next meeting.
3. Punctuality is of utmost importance. A student who comes in late in class and misses the quiz or some parts of it will not be given consideration. However, valid reasons like accidents,
hospitalization or death of immediate family may be given into consideration with pertinent papers to be presented (police or CITOM report, medical and death certificates).
4. No special quizzes, in general, shall be given. In the event that a student misses a quiz due to a reasonable absence, he/she must immediately inform the instructor when he/she comes in and
present a valid proof as to why he/she was absent. Only then can giving a special quiz may be considered. No special quiz, however, will be granted to any student who misses a laboratory
quiz/exam that requires much preparation and set-up.
5. In cases where a student misses a major examination, he/she may be given a special examination provided that he/she can show a valid proof that clearly shows the reason for missing the
examination. The proof must be presented within one week after the student returns. Otherwise, no special examination shall be granted. Fill up a form for special quiz or term exam from the
office of the dean.
6. Assignments/seatworks/library works/laboratory exercises should be passed on time. Late assignments shall be given a deduction (at least 75% will be the highest possible score).
7. Students must follow the seat plan. A student may be marked as absent if not in his/her designated seat.
8. Strictly no communication, in any form, during quizzes and major examinations. (Please refer to the student handbook). Such communications may be treated as a case of cheating and the
student/s shall receive a grade of zero (0) in that exam for the first offense and a grade of 0.00 in the subject for succeeding violations.
9. Students have the right to ask about their grades. The instructor will show the class record every end of the grading period. All clarifications/corrections/questions/complaints must be
addressed to the instructor.
