COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course in comparative philosophy of education is designed for students in the PhD Program in Education. It provides a study of the
educational implications of Idealism, Realism, Experimentalism and Existentialism. Significant factors will include the curricula emphasis,
preffered method, ethics, and aesthetics stressed by each philosophy. Attention is placed on the student’s abilitiy to identify and and describe
his or her own philosophy of education.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

- To define and discuss representative proponents and thoughts related to Idealism, Realism, Pragmatism, Reconstructivism, Behavio
rism, and Existentialism.
- To discuss the relationship between theory, philosophy and educational practice.
- To describe the historical context of the various philosophies.
- To compare and contrast the philosophical perspectives of the various philosophies.
- To discuss each of the philosophies as they relate to the aims of education, teaching methodologies, curricular strategies, and how it is
supported by the various philosophies studied.
- To discuss the strenghts and limitations of the various philosophies studied.
