Report Comments  

It's report card time and you face the prospect of writing constructive, insightful, and original comments on the 
report cards!
As each progress report becomes part of the student’s formal school record, and will be read by parents and 
future teachers, it is important for the teacher to treat progress reports as important documents. The most 
effective progress report is thorough and has a friendly feel to it. It discusses the student’s progress and 
personality in a way that only someone who truly knows and understand the student could convey.
The Report Card comments are most demanding for teachers, but most rewarding for parents as they really gain 
a true feeling as to what their child is learning. 
The development of independence, initiative, responsibility, character, confidence, social awareness, cooperation,
concentration, helpfulness, and commitment to work is a crucial element of our curriculum and ones that need the
well­thought out use of words to convey.

We've put together some useful phrases to help you when it comes time to write your own progress reports.
Start on a Positive Note
Always begin each comment with a general statement letting the parents know how happy you are to be teaching 
their child, or how much their child is learning and growing:
 It has truly been a pleasure getting to know your child this term. 
 Your child has made great progress across the curriculum since the beginning of the school year. 
 Your child has made very good academic and/or social progress this term. 
 Your child has done a very nice job this term, taking pride in her work and completing assignments with 
quality.
 Provide Specific Information Across Several Different Areas
Personal Attributes
 is an enthusiastic learner. 
 arrives at school each day with a smile, ready to learn. 
 is an active participant in small group discussions. 
 puts evident effort into his work as he completes assignments with quality in mind. 
 shows perseverance in all he does.

Set a Goal
While the students may be learning and growing, there is always room for improvement. Provide at least one 
specific goal that you will be working on with the student the following term. Simply add beginnings to the 
particular problem area, such as:
 Your child would benefit from . . . 
 This quarter we will be working on . . . 
 I would like to see your child work on . . . 
 Your child needs to pay closer attention to . . . 
 One area for improvement is . . . 
Closings
Always close on a positive note, giving a boost to  students' confidence. Let them know how proud you are of 
what they have been doing, and how you look forward to what is to come:
 I am so proud of all you have accomplished. Keep up the wonderful things you are doing! 
 You are an amazing student, and you truly shine! 
 I can hardly wait to see how you impress me during the next term! 
 You have had a terrific term, and I am confident the next one will be even better! 

Sample Report Card Comments: (The following comments should be used as guidelines only.)
_________ is a lively child who is enthusiastic about learning new topics. He enjoys working with Centre 
activities. However, he needs to gain more self­control.
_________ tries very hard when he is in school. However, he has missed a great deal of school. Being regular to 
school would help him come up to the class standards. 
_________ is very astute and expressive. He needs guidance at home to be able to complete his home work. 
_________ enjoys writing and sharing stories. She is trying very hard and some reinforcement at home would do 
wonders. 
_________ displays a maturity beyond her years. She is eager to try new things and is willing to share what she 
learns.
_________ is very shy. She enjoys experimenting and exploring. However, she is hesitant to share her thoughts 
and opinions.     
_________ enjoys exploring new tasks. However, she needs to pay more attention and to focus on directions.
_________ had a difficult time adjusting to school. He has now settled in and enjoys daily activities at school.. 
_________ is a very capable girl. She enjoys learning new things and sharing her insights. She is always willing

It has truly been a pleasure getting to know ........(Child's name) this term. He has done a good job over the past 
ten weeks of getting adjusted to a new school, and he has made new friends along the way......... is a very 
enthusiastic learner, tackling new challenges eagerly; however he seems to get discouraged easily when he feels 
the content is difficult for him........... is an active and important participant in class discussions. He has a great 
knowledge of the world that he shares with us. His  spoken vocabulary is excellent and has shown such 
improvement in his writing over the past several weeks. Goals for the next term include increasing his confidence
in his abilities to overcome challenges as well as taking personal responsibility for his actions. Academically, we 
are working on expanding upon written work with more details, building fluency in his reading and staying on 
task for longer periods of time. Keep up all the great things you are doing...........! You are a student who shines!

The classroom would not be the same without..........! She brings a smile through our door, along with great 
enthusiasm each morning. ...........is a strong critical thinking, always wondering why and how things happened. 
This skill has helped her make great strides in her class. Her writing continues to strengthen, although it is often 
challenging for her to get her work completed within given time...........loves Number­work and continues to do 
well in this area.  We do continue to work on listening skills on a daily basis. .......... frequently needs to be told to
do something three or four times before she does it, even everyday tasks such as  opening her notebook orpacking
her bag. Staying on task for any period of time is also a challenge and we are working  with her daily to stay 
focused. Our goal is for her to become independent and automatic in everyday tasks and listening to directions 
and discussions. Keep doing all the great things you are doing ______. We're so proud of you for the effort you 
are putting into your work.We can hardly wait to see what great things you do next term!!
