● Born April 1, 1908
● Brooklyn, New York
● Founder of Humanistic Psychology
● Hierarchy of Needs
● Self-Actualization
● Published Motivation and Personality and
Toward a Psychology of Being
● Died June 8, 1970
History
Maslow described his early childhood as unhappy and lonely. He spent much of his time in the library
reading books. Maslow studied law at City College of New York. After developing an interest in psychology,
he transferred to the University of Wisconsin and found a mentor in psychologist Harry Harlow who
served as his advisor. Maslow earned all three of his degrees in psychology from the University of
Wisconsin. During the 1950s, Maslow became one of the founders and driving forces behind the school of
thought known as humanistic psychology. His theories include the hierarchy of needs and
self-actualization. Maslow first introduced his concept of a hierarchy of needs in his 1943 paper "A Theory
of Human Motivation" and his book Motivation and Personality. This hierarchy suggests that people are
motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs.

Deficiency Needs vs. Growth Needs
Maslow thought deficiency and growth needs play a huge role in behavior.

Maslow thinks the order of which the needs are fulfilled does not always follow how the pyramid is set
up.

He noted that for some people, the need for self-esteem is more important than the need for love.

Criticisms of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

● Needs don’t follow a hierarchy: Most of the research that has been conducted

hasn’t been able to substantiate the needs of a hierarchy

● The theory is difficult to test: The research on self- actualization was done on a

very limited group of people, who were people he knew or thought to be self
actualized, which makes it difficult to test.
An important Shift

Instead of focusing on
abnormal behavior and
development, this focuses Needs

Activity

You will be split into 5 different groups. Each group will receive a layer of Maslow’s

hierarchy of needs. Once you receive your layer, grab the materials you will need

(paper, markers, ect) to create a poster on what a classroom might look/feel like in

regards to the need you receive.

After your done with your poster, we will do a gallery walk so your peers can
appreciate each other’s posters.
