Will the new casino in Daegu hit a jackpot?

From the outside, Hakjeong Elementary School in Chilgok is just another public school. A quick peek inside one of their English classrooms may surprise visitors, however. Hakjeong is home to two of the newest English teachers in Daegu. Theyre not Korean and theyre not foreign. In fact, theyre not human at all. The two robots that teach English at Hakjeong are part of a pilot program to assess the feasibility of using robots to help Korean kids learn English in classrooms. I wasnt sure what to expect when I first came face-to-face with the robot on a rainy Thursday afternoon. It was awfully cute, moved reasonably well, and even had a cute name Engkey (short for English Key but pronounced ing kee a homonym of the Korean word for popular). Engkey can teach two different kinds of classes. The robot is controlled remotely by a teacher in the Philippines, three times a week, to teach new lessons to groups of eight students. Once a week, a Korean teacher in the room uses a remote control to review the lessons taught by the Filipino teacher on previous days, with half the class on one day and the other half of the class on another day. Unfortunately, I was only able to visit on a day when a previous lesson was being reviewed with three different groups of four students each.

Welcome to the inaugural edition of In Daegu, Daegu's International Newspaper. Like its companion publication, Daegu Pockets, In Daegu seeks to bridge the cultural divide between foreign culture and international culture through its bilingual format, language aids, and balanced content, in effort to appeal to both foreigners and Koreans. Whereas with Daegu Pockets, a foreigner visiting or living in Daegu can find an abundance of useful information, maps, restaurants, and event inCraig White, Managing Editor formation, In Daegu is geared towards articles focusing craig@in-daegu.com on Daegu, Korea, and global culture. With a newsprint format and larger pages, we are able to utilize its costeffectiveness to reach out to more readers and hopefully achieve some lofty distribution goals. Presently, In Daegu is launching with 5000 copies distributed throughout Daegu. An initial goal is to get that up to 10,000 copies/ month. Next step, fresh content and 10,000 copies, every 2 weeks. But we can't get there without you. Our readers, writers, translators, and supporters. I hope you enjoy this early version of our evolving publication. But more importantly, I hope that you find it within you to get involved and help be a part of something that can make maybe just a small difference in the lives that we live in Daegu.

A major ally that we have to help bolster our distributive reach is our relationship with the Daegu Foreign Language Association (Daegu FLA), led by Association President Byung-Jik Kim. The Daegu FLA has membership of over 400 foreign language academies in Daegu, most of which employ native teachers. The association and their members meet regularly and frequently discuss ways to help make the lives of their foreign teaching staff, a little more easier to adjust to Korean life. Through our collaborative relationship, the Daegu FLA helps distribute over 2000 copies of InDaegu to all of its member academies, each month, enabling us to reach the majority of foreign teachers employed by Daegu language academies. Thanks again to the great help by Byung-Jik and his hard-working staff at Daegu FLA!

The overpass at Dongdaegu Station, which received mixed reviews in the past for its old fashioned image, is soon to undergo transformations due to safety concerns. Daegu Metropolitan City released news in February that the overpass and surrounding square of Dongdaegu Station, which raised the safety concerns, will be widened to accommodate a second KTX opening and a new Dongdaegu transit center. The overpass was built in 1969 and has since served as a gateway to Daegu. However, after forty years in operation, the city decided a renovation was necessary to comply with modern safety regulations. Currently, the bridge at Dongdaegu Station is ranked safety D grade, which restricts 3.5-ton trucks from crossing. In addition, the road width to enter the elevated bridge from Dongdaegu Road was decreased from 70 meters to 30 meters, and in doing so has caused a bottleneck situation causing increased traffic congestion. For these reasons, the city decided to invest 135 billion won to expand the overpass to a far more obliging width, with an increase of between 48-126 meters and length of approximately 338 meters. The transit square of Dongdaegu Station will also be widened from 18,758 square meters to 48,297 square meters (more than twice the current area), allowing for a greater selection of amenities and services to blossom there. Construction is expected to begin in August. A local civil servant supported this expansion: If the overpass and square of Dongdaegu Station are upgraded and expanded, it will mean accelerated development for Dongdaegu Station, the adjacent area and this will re-affirm the Dongdaegu status as a gateway to Daegu City.

Continued from pg 1: ENGKEY-the key to english? Although the concept is revolutionary, the teaching methodology employed by the robot is anything but. The three review lessons I observed were clearly based on the audiolingual approach to language teaching: listening followed by continual repetition was the guiding principle. The robot attempted to check student comprehension and retention by having them repeat two expressions and a couple of vocabulary items from yesterdays class. The whole class engaged in choral repetition for a couple of minutes before the robot asked individual students in turn to repeat several words into a microphone to evaluate their pronunciation. I can attest to the inaccuracy of Engkeys speech recognition engine. I saw it give five stars (the maximum) to students who mispronounced words but fail to even recognize words that students enunciated perfectly. The whole process seemed rather slow, forced, and tedious, demonstrated by student frustration at having to repeat words because the robot failed to recognize them, at first. Engkey can also review various songs and chants while it gyrates around the room, extending and retracting its arms, continuously. What it sadly seems unable to do, however, is alter either the tone or speed of its voice. The songs were much too fast for students to sing along to; equally unimpressive was the monotone chanting. The games at the end seemed to be the only part of the class that the students enjoyed. Even then, games could only be played by one student at a time, using a wireless, handheld mouse. Engkey was only able to focus on the entire class or a single individual student at any one time; group work or pair work was not part of the curriculum.

If you werent wearing a stopwatch before, you might want to think about re-accessorizing your wrist. At least if youre one of the 853,000 users of the Daegu public transportation system. Recent changes to the public transportation transfer system have left many users quickening their pace and feeling a little more pressure from Father Time. While subway passengers have long been accustomed to swiping their transit cards at both ends of their journeys, bus riders may have recently noticed that they too are now expected to swipe twice, as new policies have taken effect. Whereas before users had free unlimited transfers within sixty minutes of first getting on, Daegu Metropolitan City has changed the policy to free unlimited transfers within thirty minutes of first getting off. The city hopes this will benefit long-distance riders who before couldnt take advantage of free transfers, as the initial part of their trip was longer than an hour. However, for those who have to transfer multiple times or use a combination of subways and buses, the new system is less than ideal. Subway stations and bus stops are not always right beside each other, often requiring the rider to trek between the two. Factor in the three hundred plus stairs one must climb to reach daylight from the bowels of the subway tracks, tack on bus wait times, and one suddenly finds her/himself in a race against the clock. Thus far, many have opposed the new system, while others argue the cut-off time simply needs to be lengthened.

Its easy to make fun of a robot trying to do a humans job. Engkey needs to be improved in innumerable ways before Korean or foreign English teachers need to fear for their jobs. Most of the robots problems seem to be related to the structure of the lessons or to bugs in the software: nothing a new curriculum or a software update couldnt fix. Given that Engkey costs a mere ten million won, it should serve as an urgent wakeup call for all of us humans to upgrade our skills and become even better at our respective jobs before its too late ,

In a meeting at City Hall, the mayor pledged to heavily invest in the Emergency Medical System of Daegu in the coming year. In fact, the mayor plans to invest 3.05 billion won in 2011 alone to improve emergency procedures. The need for a change was prompted by the recent death of a 4-year-old girl, as well as poor response for stroke victims. The mayor explained that the changes to the Emergency System will reduce the risk for inappropriate patient transport due to the wrong emergency information. The upgrades will improve real-time patient information, emergency response time, and better training for medical personnel, as well as improving current facilities. In addition, an improvement to create proper patient triage before arrival to a medical facility will be done. High-risk patients, like those with cerebro-vascular disorders and severe trauma will be taken to university-grade hospitals, while other less critical patients, will be taken to smaller specialized hospitals designated for such cases.

GrouPon koreA DominAtes business

Groupon, the global social commerce market leader, began its business in Korea and is expected to dramatically change the domestic social commerce market. Various organizations have invested more than a stunning ten billion won in Groupon. That is tenfold more than the capital of the current business leader, Ticket Monster. The capital of Groupon can be invested in the market and large scale distribution of the goods. First of all, Groupon would benefit in the competition of commission. The other top social commerce companies like Ticket Monster or Coupang cant make the commission rate low because they cant achieve the economies of scale. The payment of the social commerce companies is paid after the salesperson makes the contract, as a way of giving incentive. It is hard to lower the commission rate. The social commerce companies in Korea has a small or middle sized business, so if one company lower its commission, the other companies should lower theirs. They form an implicit cartel of minimum commission rate. Groupon Korea might widen their market share to receive the commission as little as possible from the partner at the early launch. Groupon Korea has suggested the commission to be under 25% to the partners. The aggressive marketing of Groupon Korea is based on the huge capital. As the competition of the

Current erratic economic conditions have made financial growth difficult for companies worldwide. Despite these circumstances, 478 firms became publicly traded in 2010 (though this marks a drop from 2007s five hundred fifty-five, the recent numbers are far from insubstantial). Many are hopeful that 2011 will mark a significant year for initial public offerings (IPO), especially those in the technology industry. An IPO is created when a firm goes public by issuing shares of its stock for public trading. Here are some of 2011s biggest IPO contenders:

ZiLLow Zillow.com is an online real estate database expected to go public in 2011, despite problems with low profits. Groupon Groupon is a website that sells daily deal coupons on goods and services across the globe. In 2010, Groupon grossed revenues of approximately $350 million. Despite a substantial buyout bid from Google, Groupon (valued at $1.5 billion) will move toward an IPO. The LadderS TheLadders.com offers online job search and recruitment services for positions with base salaries of $100,000 or more. With revenue passing the $100 million mark, an IPO is likely in the coming year. ZynGa Zynga, currently valued at $5.51 billion, is a social network game developer. The company creates browser-based games that work as both stand-alone and widget applications on social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace.

demand media Demand Media, an online media firm, hopes to go public this year with 4.5 million shares valued between $14-16. Boasting 13,000 content generators, Demand Media expects a valuation of up to $138 million. ToyS r uS Toys R Us currently operates 840 stores in the US and 716 stores in 34 other countries. However the firm could encounter significant problems going public, mainly due to its poor financial state with quarterly losses up to as much as $14 million.

Zipcar Zipcar is a membership-based car sharing company planning to go public in 2011. It is uncertain if the move for an IPO will continue due to a recent influx of financing. nieLSen media Nielsen Media, a media research firm, is destined to be the prodigy of 2011 IPOs, expecting a bid between $1.75-$2 billion. written by miKe roY Have you ever been sitting at a Daegu bus stop, watching the ticker and wondering why the bus youre waiting for doesnt seem to be getting any closer, when all of a sudden a pack of shiny spandex-clad cyclists races by? Hundreds of men, women, and children riding bikes of all different types and sizes, from giant unicycles to low-riding, stylized tricycles; from million-won designer models to that rusty one that has been lying on its side next to KNUs North Gate for at least three months now. What are they all doing? Welcome to the Daegu Bike Festival. Funded by Daegu City Hall and organized by the Daegu Council for Local Agenda 21 ( 21), the DBF is an opportunity for cyclists of all shapes, sizes, ages, races, and levels of ability and dedication to enjoy themselves while at the same time demonstrating that Daegu is indeed a bikeable city. From humble beginnings in 2006, the DBF has grown into an event that regularly attracts hundreds of riders, and sometimes more over one thousand people participated in last Octobers event, the Daegu Bike Rally, a leisurely 25 kilometer course from Daegu World Cup Stadium to the main gate of Keimyung University. (Actually, all the way to the cafeteria, and followed by free lunch!) Other rides last year included a scenic ride along the Nakdong River in May, and a loop from downtown to Dusan intersection and back to celebrate Daegu Car-Free day in September. Every ride begins with signing in and picking up your raffle ticket, and ends with dozens of gifts, ranging from the small (helmets) to the big (bicycles) to the just plain

strange (environmentally-friendly frying pans). The DBF represents more than just a chance to win some free stuff, though. For the chronically lost, the process of finding the starting location, following the course, and making your way back home from the destination is an excellent way to learn the layout of the city; while the chronically bored may encounter restaurants and shops that might otherwise have gone unknown. If thoughts of giant carbon footprints weigh heavy on your conscience, DBF events may be a chance to get started doing some good. If youre interested in bicycles, bike fashion, or bike-mounted gizmos, youll have plenty to feast your eyes on. For those looking to meet other bicycle enthusiasts to arrange rides

with, theres no better place to be. If you like to feel important, you can ride at the front of the pack, right next to the police escorts. And if youve been waiting for an opportunity to parade around in public wearing spandex, well...you arent alone. The final DBF event of 2010, a 14-km ride along the banks of the Geumhogang River, took place in November. DBF will begin its 2011 campaign on March 19th (hopefully the cold will have passed by then) with a ride starting out in front of the West District Office (). The exact time and course have yet to be decided; for up-to-date information, and to register for future events, have a look at http://www.ecobike.org. DBF events are always free of charge and always open to one and all. So far, few for-

eigners have heard about or participated regularly in the festivities. This year, lets ride together in order to raise awareness, while at the same time helping to make a cleaner, healthier, more friendly Daegu. If youre interested in finding out about ecofriendly restaurants, shops, and events in Daegu, please visit http://noksaeksari.blogspot.com or find the group / Daegu Green Living on Facebook. The softball league will be made up of eight teams, with each team having thirteen members - ten males and three females. All are welcome and encouraged to register. Currently, they have had players from the United States, Canada, UK, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Ireland and Korea competing for the coveted end of season trophy - and more importantly - the bragging rights! The league will be played in four different locations so it will give you a chance to see some more of the city as well. Duryu Park, Youngnam University, Samsung Lions Auxiliary Park and Keimyung University are the places where the battles will take place! The league is a lot of fun, but also holds an ever-growing degree of competitiveness; so if you are interested in signing up, please ensure that you can commit to playing for the entire season. The cost of registration is a mere 50,000KRW, which will guarantee you ten regular season games as well as a team teeshirt and a lifetime of memories. If your team finishes in the Top 6, you will advance to the play-offs in Week 11, and who knows after that! Once the season ends, the league will hold a banquet for all the players to get together one last time and reminisce on where it all went wrong - or potentially bask in the glory of being a member of Daegus number one softball team! Registration for returning players will be on March 6th between 2pm and 5pm, and for newcomers, a week later on March 13th between 6pm and 8pm at The Holy Grill. For more information, and to keep up to date with the build up to the start of the season, you can look for the Daegu Softball 2011 group page on Facebook and request to join. Hope to see you there!

shArk Dive
written by Kenneth QuiLLinan Are you aware that you can do a shark dive for less than $100 at the Busan Aquarium? A swift fifty-minute KTX journey from Dongdaegu to Busan station will get you halfway there. Then just pop on the local subway and forty-five minutes later, you will be at the aquarium ready for what is likely to be the most terrifying adventure of your life. The aquarium is located right in front of Haeundae Beach, so you have plenty of options to pass the day once you have survived the dive. I recommend going for lunch and maybe a beer or two at the recently opened Irish Wolfhound Pub. As I mentioned, there is plenty to do so I am sure you wont be wandering about aimlessly for too long. It is highly recommended to reserve your spot for the shark dive at least one month in advance as positions fill up promptly. Dives only occur once every Saturday at 11.30am and Sunday at 9.30am and groups are limited to 10 for each dive. Some reassurance that the sharks will not devour you is offered; the sharks are given a nice big breakfast before you invade their territory, so eating will be the last thing on their minds. Its not every day you get the chance to swim with sharks, so why not jump out of your comfort zone and hop into a tank full of sharks - whats the worst that could happen? For more information on reserving your spot on one of these weekend dives, take a look at www.scubainkorea.com .Do it!

DAeGu ice rinks written by Kenneth QuiLLinan

Even though I have never been ice-skating out of fear that I will be stretchered off the rink with multiple broken bones, that is no reason to deter you from enjoying a trip to one of the indoor ice rinks Daegu has to offer. We all remember the movie Blades of Glory, right? Just look at the moves Will Ferrell and Jon Heder pulled off in that. Why not go and see if you can do the same? I do intend to go myself within the next few weeks, so hopefully I wont be admitted to Dongsan Hospital shortly after. There are a few ice rinks to choose from in and around Daegu, with the Daegu Indoor Ice Skate Ring at Daegu Tower the most popular in the city. It is open from 10am-7pm on weekdays and 10am-8pm on weekends. If you are like myself and work in the afternoon, this gives you the option to go skating before school instead of just lying in your apartment living the life of a retiree. The entrance fee is also very reasonable at 4,500KW for adults, 4,000KW for children ages 7-18, and kids under 7 are 3,5000KW. The skate rental fee is 3,000KW for all ages. The phone number, if you require more information, is 053-652-5114. Another skating option in Daegu is the Susung Land Ice Rink. The fees at Susung are 500KW more than Daegu Tower but this is hardly enough to break the bank. Skate rental fees are also 3,000KW here. The rink opens at 10am and closes at 5pm weekdays but is open until 7pm on weekends and holidays. Their website is very accessible so check it out at www.susungicerink.com for more information before making the trip there. If you do pay a visit to an ice rink anytime soon and see a purple-faced waygook flat out on the ice, that will more than likely be me, so just skate on and leave me be.

written by nora ebert Have you heard about Pilates? German-Born Joseph Pilates was frail as a child and studied many different fitness diciplines to strengthen himself. He brought together ideas from areas such as Yoga, Zen Buddhism and acrobatics to create his own fitness method during and after World War I. Pilates moved to New York in the 1920s and began to teach and train other teachers. What exactly is Pilates? A body-conditioning technique designed to stretch, strengthen and balance the body. Pilates targets the deep postural muscles within the body through a series of exercises aimed at building muscle strength and rebalancing the body. Excellent for improving posture, strength and flexibility and aligning the body correctly, pilates also teaches coordination, concentration and control of the body. Why Pilates? Pilates is a system of low impact exercise to strengthen and stretch the body. It also incorporates a method of focused breathing patterns that help balance the body as well. Pilates helps recovering from injuries and is used as rehabilitation method and, very important, prevents pain in the first place. Pilates can be the only exercise, once or twice a week at minimum. But Pilates is a wonderful exercise to combine it with Yoga or other fitness programmes, because it is the only programme that focuses mainly on the core muscles. I am a certified teacher for Pilates, Yoga and Fitness. I teach one on one training or very small groups. PlAns for A new stADium AnnounceD

written by Dorian DiCKerSon-WhiteSiDe translated by boYoung KWon On February 1st, Daegu Metropolitan City announced its plans to build a new baseball stadium at Daegu Grand Park Station. Construction is projected to take place at the end of next year and be completed by 2014. By 2012, Daegu City will have cleared the area and fully purchased the land for the complex. Investments for the new stadium are estimated at 150 billion won. Of the 150 billion, Daegu City plans to obtain 30 billion from government expenditures and 70 billion from the citys expenditures. Daegu Grand Park, on the second Daegu subway line, was chosen as the most appropriate site for the stadium over Duryu Park due to its accessibility to the developed transportation network. The 150,000 sq. ft. stadium will have 25,000 seats and a capacity of 30,000 people. The city is also discussing the possibility of a long-term 50 billion won investment in the Samsung Lions baseball team after completion of the baseball stadium.

Later, the sports marketing company IMG Korea contacted me and asked if I was interested in designing a golf course for the club. So I accepted. Q. Many retired or near-retirement PGA stars are increasingly getting involved in golf course design. Do you see this as a trend? Yes, many PGA golfers are getting involved in golf course design. In fact, travelling the world and seeing a lot of great golf courses often inspire me. Sometimes, when challenged in a course, I get a design idea for a good golf course. I want to design a special golf course. I prefer to build one good course rather than ten average ones. That suits my philosophy. Im participating in this project to design a superb golf course that fits this philosophy. Q. What do you put the biggest emphasis on in designing a golf course?

Vijay Singh, famed PGA golfer and now, golf course developer, recently spoke with Korean media about his involvement with designing Yeongcheon Reyford Country Club, near Daegu, in Gyeongbuk Province. A match against the tiger (Tiger Woods) would definitely be worth a try. Because hes not feeling so well lately That answer from Vijay Singh, the perfectionist PGA golfer, was quite witty. He was

ranked No.1 in the world in 2004, ahead of the famed top golfer Tiger Woods. When asked about the reasons for his recent poor performance, he responded with humor and confidence, I once beat Woods, but now Phil Mickelson is the hunter of the tiger. When is Woods or Mickelson going to have a tournament? He continued, I had two knee surgeries last year to repair the injury from 2008. My back was also not good. So, I have had a tough time lately. edited by jennifer o graDY Being raised in a firmly pro-golf family certainly lowered the tolerance barrier of this screen golf skeptic. However, upon further investigation, it appears that the pros are outweigh the cons. Screen golf, or Shugol, is a new form of cyber-sporting experience. Forget prehistoric screaming at your TV bubblehead men, this is real deal, top of the range fun along with excellent graphics, simulations, and (optional) alcohol-fueled exercise. For a modest fee, one can rent a room (rather like a noraebang), have some drinks (also like a norebang) and occasionally make a complete fool of oneself. Sound familiar? Designed to tickle the entertainment taste buds from the golf enthusiast to the absolute beginner, the Shu-gol palette is certainly brimming with tempting CGI flavors. Shugol was born one fateful night in Korea when the gold gods looked to the sky, took note of the rain clouds, and decided that on that day, they would create a means of satisfying golf cravings in bad weather. Over the past two years, there are officially larger percentages of people choosing to play Shu-gol over the traditional game. More recent findings show that there is a significant rise in the games popularity in the Pohang, Gyeongju, and Gyeongbuk Province. Kim Dong Yun, the owner of a screen golf establishment in Hwangseong-dong, said the number of customers has increased this past winter, probably as a result of poor weather and the attractively low prices. In the Po-Hang area, Shu-gol appears to be growing in popularity. There are ninetytwo golf courses but it is almost impossible to use any without a reservation during the week. Yoon Ki Tae, owner of Jung-ang Ro Dong, said screen golf is one room of entertainment. The appeal is likened to the noraebang, game bang, and jjimjilbang culture. TV is emerging, next to word of mouth, as the leading advertising source for boosting the games popularity, with many famous personalities seen practicing swings with umbrellas, mops, etc. The estimated number of screen golf courses nationwide is fifteen thousand, and the numbers are increasing. The number of regular customers who play screen golf more than four times a month is thought to be around 1.2 million. Clearly screen golf is trending at present, but as is fashion law, the new black must eventually hit the discount racks. And, with figures showing a player increase of 25% in winter time, it will be interesting to review these numbers come summer. The more health conscious among us have also shown an increased dislike for the stuffy, and often smoky, environment. Time will tell if this booming industry can maintain speed or if it will eventually be outdone by its traditional counterpart.

Having played numerous rounds of screen golf across Daegu, I would have to say Joon Dong Golfzon is among the best. The owner, who likes to be referred to as 'TK', is very friendly and also has very good English, helps make this place unlike many of the other centres. It makes it a lot easier to reserve a tee off time via phone. He is very interested in welcoming foreigners to his newly refurbished establishment and was talking about offering generous discounts to play in one of the seven very spacious and comfortable rooms available. If you are an early bird and tee off before 1pm, any day of the week, it will cost a mere 10,000KW for 18 holes, and with the price set at 20,000KW after 1pm. As well as 18 holes of golf, there is a wide range of complimentary snacks and soft drinks available during the round, so you certainly get your moneys worth. Located just a few blocks from Daegu Bank subway station, directly across from the Samsung Church, it is definitely worth checking out if you are looking for a screen golf venue that offers top class facilities,as well as a very friendly atmosphere among the staff and golfers. The opening hours are between 10am and 3am, seven days a week, so even if you work until late in the evening, you could still squeeze in a round! If you want to reserve a room to play before going there, please call 053-764-7553 and ask for TK!

SOCIAL NETWORKS FOR THE FAMILY

written by SheLLeY DSouza One of lifes hardest challenges is parenting. Families and friends will offer their advice, and self-help books can only help out so much. Todays Internet age brings about new ways of collecting information and getting connected to others. Social networking sites help connect people that have similar likes and ways of life and make it easy to reach out to those that encounter similar problems. Its hard enough for parents to have the time, effort, or ability to stay connected with real life. These sites are a helpful way to feel like they belong to a community, especially when they live in a country away from home where getting information and help isnt easy. The most popular and extensive parenting website is www.cafemom.com. Aside from the advice-giving section on parenting, it also is an outlet for parents to catch up on news events, write blogs, play games, and post pictures of their babies. Cafemom acts more as an online community that helps mothers to interact with each other and come together to discuss events and issues about parenting and other news. If you want to have more of a Facebook appeal, then other sites like the www.stir.com, www.mothersclick.com and www.mamapedia.com might work better. These sites allow parents to set up pages, add friends, create events with parents that live in the surrounding areas, and share pictures with each other. What set these sites apart from others is that Mothersclick has weekly baby photo challenges and supports creating events for mothers to meet. Mamapedia offers deals and coupons in various cities, supports mom-owned businesses, and offers reviews of various schools. The one problem with these sites is that the main focus is on the mother. There is no attention paid to the father or to the parenting unit. Www.minti.com and www. remarkableparents.com were two of the few sites I found that seemed to appeal to both sexes. They are very basic sites but easy to use. Minti promotes activity on their site by using a point system with every post made, and deals with issues in parenting babies to teenagers. Remarkableparents is more of a blog that helps gear parents to other helpful parenting sites. If you are interested in websites focused mainly on fathers, www.daddaily.com promotes itself as the only social network exclusively for dads. What is nice is that fathers have their own space to talk about their problems, which include any issues concerning their wives. Having a family in Korea may create some barriers to getting help in parenting. Its helpful to have social networking sites to guide you if you need advice, and to make you feel like you belong to a community. Sometimes its refreshing to talk to other parents, and other times its nice to get away and play a game or catch up on the news. Either way, to find a site best suited for you, look for something that remains relevant to your needs, style, location and desires. written by niCK eLWooD You might very well walk past without giving it a second glance; save for the fact that a Lotteria is nestled in one corner. From the somewhat clumsy building amidst a sprawling melee of hotchpotch architecture, reminiscent of pre-1988 Korea, you might not expect to be impressed. However, Goong-Jeon Lavender Jjimjilbang, close to Dong Daegu railway station, is not only one of the largest bathhouses I have visited, but one of the richest in character and interest. When leaving the elevator and entering the changing rooms, Goong-Jeon Lavender certainly spoils the visitor with space and the reception area, with a snack bar fronted by cute, if not bizarre, pink, white and gold baroque imitation tables and chairs, that occupies an area the equivalent to that of many other changing rooms. An atmosphere of spaciousness and intrigue is imparted before one has even collected their locker key. Access between the bathhouse and changing area is via large ramps and on entering the bathing complex, you are confronted with a very large showering facility with stand-up showers organised in a multitude of partitions around the periphery, and an army of seated showers relegated to the centre. I usu-

ally count shower units, but on this occasion there were simply too many and besides, the blue glow emanating from pools beyond the shower area, were demanding my exploration. In the distance, at the far end of the complex, I was attracted to the large cave bath (), the water of which was shimmering on the cave roof. On the partitions between the sitdown showers, between which you walk to reach the pools, large crystalline stones, appear to be lit from beneath, added to the subterranean atmosphere. Three pools occupy the area before the cave feature with various smaller pools on one side and four saunas on the other. The largest pool is a round warm-water pool, but my favourite, located almost in one corner and portioned by glass, is a Dead Sea salt bath (). The water is dark blue and the high salt content certainly made my body more buoyant. Among the four saunas were a steam sauna

and a salt sauna all constructed from either jade or some other well-being material. There is also an ice room. However, the central feature of Goong-Cheon Lavender, are the two pools at the head of the pool complex which are designed like caves. Small windows provided enough light for real ivy to grow from the rock formation walls and from the ceiling hang impressive, realistic stalactites. Both pools are cold, more suited for hot weather and one has a number of power showers useful for massaging an aching back. Non-invasive lighting, various scents from the saunas, such as rose, pine and mugwort plus beautifully soft and fresh smelling towels all enhance the atmosphere and though there is a television in one sauna, which is piped into other rooms, levels of noise are low. Numerous pools also use silver ionised water which is subsequently microbe-free.

facilities, including general fitness, weight training, yoga and golf as well as a jjimjilbang equipped with various jewellery rooms. Similar to the bathhouse saunas, these are rooms constructed out of stone or metal with well-being qualities. A roof garden is also accessible from the jjimjilbang. This is an impeccably clean and exciting complex to which I was welcomed in English. There is much to explore and the size, atmosphere and unique bathing experiences make this a great venue to relax. My only criticism there were no bats! (Nick Elwood writes extensively on bathhouse culture and facilities in Daegu, in his blog; Bathhouse Ballads. www.elwood5566.net)

e-2 visA holDers fAce more DruG testinG

written by PriYa Sam translation by Sehee Lee If you thought drug testing for foreigners seeking E-2 visas was tough before, you may be surprised to hear that stricter regulations are now in place. As of February 1st, all E-2 visa holders will be required to undergo up to two drug tests before teaching. The first test is standard; a drug test to detect the presence of methamphetamine, cocaine, opium and marijuana. As we all know from various sports scandals, these tests sometimes produce false results. Now, as part of the new procedure, anyone who tests positive will be forced to undergo an additional test using mass spectrometer testing. This is the testing used to confirm positive results in athletes. It is a more accurate and in-depth method, usually performed using urine, hair or blood samples. Drugs used within the past 90 days can be detected depending on the sample taken. If the second test result is positive then a visa will not be issued to the applicant. Remember, this also applies to returning teachers. In this case, a visa extension or renewal will be denied. The new rules also includes a clause that only allows certain medical facilities to perform the testing. Now, only results from centers that can either perform independent testing or outsource their testing are acceptable. Medical and drug testing regulations in Korea have been constantly changing. For a period of time, E-2 visa holders were required to undergo HIV testing, this clause was removed last year. Also, prior to last September, cannabis was not included on the list of drugs that would show up on a positive test. This seemed reasonable, since the severity of the laws surrounding cannabis-use differ in some countries where E-2 visa holders reside. However, this regulation also changed last September, and now cannabis has been added to the list of drugs that will result in a positive test. Just remember that drug testing is not just a one-time thing, even if the teacher stays with the same school, she/he must undergo a new drug test when renewing his/her visa. If someone chooses to use drugs on vacation or trips home, they should be aware that the drugs could remain in your system and show up on a test leaving a person high and dry! KEYWORDS: in place - . PrivAte tutorinG fees in DAeGu some of the hiGhest in the country, sAys ministry
written by maC PearSaLL According to a statement released February 15 by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the monthly rates for private education in Daegu are the among highest in the country. The 250,000 won per person per month rate is the third-highest in Korea behind only Seoul (321,000) and Gyeounggido (271,000). The rest of the country: Daejeon, 238,000 Ulsan, 231,000 Incheon. 220,000 Gwangju, 213,000 Busan, 208,000 Gyeongnam, 204,000 won. On the other side, Jeonbuk currently has the lowest rates at 164,000/month, along with Jeonnam (168,000) Chungbuk (174,000), Chungnam (178,000) and Gyeongbuk (187,000). Tuition rates in flux but attendance remains high Although tuition rates have fallen by as much as 10,000 per person/month in Seoul and Gyeongbuk, in Daegu rates have only decreased by 1,000 won/month. Since last year the average rates of private education per person in Daegu for elementary school students fell by 21,000 won from 253,000 won to 232,000 won. However, the rates for middle and high school students have increased, from 291,000 won to 312,000 won for the middle school students (+21,000 won) and from 206,000 won to 218,000 won for the high school students (+12,000 won). For the specialized schools the rates have increased even more, from 101,000 won/month to 136,000 won/month, a rise of by 34.7%. That figure suggests that the rates for middle school students in Daegu (312,000/month) are the highest in the country, second only to Seoul (309,000/month). Despite the various countermeasures used by the Daegu Metropolitan Office approximately 77.4% of elementary students in Daegu currently attend academies. This is only slightly behind the capital (77.5%) but ahead of Gwangju (75.2%) and Ulsan (73.1%). Over 80% of Daegus middle school students and 58.6% of students also receive private tuition through academies.

10,000 koreAn teAchers to be sent overseAs by 2015

written by juLiuS niChoLSon The Korean government plans to send 10,000 teachers abroad to experience various education systems. On Tuesday, the Korean Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology announced their five year plan of improving skills and the international competitiveness of outstanding teachers as well as increasing the employment rates for graduates of universities of education. The plan, which was introduced during the current falling employment rates for teachers, will allow participants to teach or work at schools and research institutions overseas. They will also be allowed to enroll in training courses in other countries for a year. The list that teachers are allowed to choose from will be broadened from the current list of countries such as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom to include other countries in the European Union, China, Japan, and the Middle East. Science and Math teachers will have the opportunity to receive training programs from world renowned institutes such as the European Council for Nuclear Research, the International Center for Theoretical Physics, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (N.A.S.A). 30 math and science teachers from South Korea and New York City will take part in an exchange program this year to assist local teachers. This month the ministry will hold a briefing for the selection of teachers so that a final list will be completed by June. Korea is also considering sending teachers to developing countries as part of its official development assistance program.

KoTEsol: hElPiNG You lEarN hoW To hElP PEoPlE lEarN

written by matt DoYon When I first came to Korea five years ago, I asked myself a serious question that seems to be relatively universal among English teachers here: How do I teach English?!?! At the time, the only support I had was that of my co-teachers and friends. Many of them felt the same way I did, and we all somehow managed to survive to teach another day. Five years later, I still on occasion ask myself the same question I did on day one. Thankfully, however, there are more and better resources available to not only help you as a teacher, but as a foreigner living in Korea. One such resource is KOTESOL. I was dragged to my first chapter meeting three years ago kicking and screaming (yes, literally) and left feeling something I hadnt felt in quite some time; hope. Hope and a feeling that maybe I wasnt the only person struggling to help students learn a language as different from their native tongue as sweet-potato and corn on pizza are to the non-Korean palette. So what is KOTESOL? Korea Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages is a professional organization dedicated to helping teachers and students with English learning and instruction. We look to help teachers do a better job in the classroom and to make the job itself easier, not only by providing ideas but also by helping to establish social networks between teachers. We also seek to build bridges between Korean and non-Korean teachers in order to help foster better teaching environments and communication between colleagues in educational institutions. The Daegu chapter of KOTESOL further offers recognition for professional development by providing for members upon request a certificate showing the number of hours they have participated in professional development by attending KOTESOL meetings. This not only looks great on a resume, but can genuinely help teachers to develop their skills. We offer more bang for your membership buck. So, if youre looking to be a better teacher, to make life easier in Korea, to improve your resume or just to meet people, join us every first Saturday of the month at Kyungpook University. Remember, being a teacher is a great responsibility, but it doesnt have to be a great burden.

Continued from pg 10: Vijay Sing To Build Pga-Quality Course In Daegu/Gyeongbuk Region I want to create a familiar but challenging course, a course that everybody, amateurs and professionals alike, can enjoy. I focus on designing a course that is not easily conquered but where all players can have fun. Q. Youve been on many golf tours. Where is the golf course that impressed you the most? Ive travelled to many great golf courses throughout the world. America, specifically, has a lot of good ones. I would say Pebble Beach Golf Course and Augusta National Golf Club. Q. Youve designed your first golf course in Korea. How do you feel? I can still make changes to some of the incomplete parts under construction, and its very fun and exciting to see the changes. This is the first time that Ive been involved in golf course design in Korea. Im glad that the constructions going well, thanks to a good design team and the support of Reyford Country Club and Daewoo E&C. Q. What is your impression of the course? I cant really say whats good or bad at this stage, because its not complete. But Im satisfied with the progress. Im hopeful about further progress because many people are offering good help. Q. What is your favorite hole on Reyford? Because I havent looked at all 27 holes yet, its hard to pick one specific hole right now. But I do have some holes that I like. They are challenging ones. Ill be able to tell you what they are once the construction is complete. Q. I know you previously designed a golf course in Fiji. How many golf courses have you designed, and in what countries? I have designed about 5-6 courses in Fiji, Malaysia, China, Morocco and Dubai. Some are still under construction. Q. What is a good age to start golf? It depends on the individual, but if you want me to give you a specific number, then probably around 10. Ten is usually the age that people can get a grasp of technique. Technique is important but practice is the most important. I have a son who has a talent for golf, but he didnt like to practice. Eventually, he stopped. Its difficult to say how many hours are good to spend in practice, but I can say PGA golfers practice a lot. A lot of practice is necessary to achieve a good record and improve performance. Q. Do you have any advice on practice for amateur golfers? Golf is a sport that requires mental and physical preparation. If you are an amateur, take systematic lessons from professional golfers, instead of practicing by yourself. Once you reach a professional level, you can improve your own skills by reading books and watching golf videos. Mental preparation is as important as physical preparation. So, find training that suits you and modify it. In terms of technique, I also watch DVDs. I wasnt going to promote it, but now that I mention it, I made a DVD that will be useful for golfers at every level. Itll be released soon. I believe it will be very helpful in practicing golf. Q. What are the happiest and toughest moments in playing golf? As a professional golfer, it is important for me to do my best and win tournaments. When it turns out well, I am happy. When the play doesnt go well, its tough. It is very hard when I come out with poor records due to injuries, like in the last few years. Q. Youre known for practicing a lot. How many hours do you practice? I dont count the time, so I dont know exactly. I just enjoy practicing. Enjoying it is important. I like the moment when I walk across the field after hitting a ball. If I have to give you a number, I would say I usually practiced for 6 to 8 hours a day when I first started golf, but these days, about 4 hours. Q. What is the most memorable match you had? I would say the Masters. Golfers feel honored just by participating in Masters Golf tournaments. I also remember the Korea Open in 2008. I hope I can have another match at the Korea Open or other international golf tournaments, after Reyford C.C. is complete.

research and translation by mirae Lee written by Dorian DiCKerSon In the absence of expressing his own freedom for over thirty years, artist Song Byeok, a North Korean escapee, is being recognized in Seoul for his Forever Freedom Paintings that represent the yearning for a free life for his people. For Byeok, freedom has a more profound meaning than for the average person, as he was once a North Korean propaganda artist for Kim Jong-Il, never able to express his own ideas in his paintings. Fueled by starvation, Song Byeok and his father attempted to flee North Korea across the border to China, but doom would befall his father as the current swept him away and Byeok was not only denied help for his father, but thrown into a hard labor prison camp by border guards, where due to the hard work, he lost a finger. One year later, he tried to flee again and succeeded. In 2002, he became naturalized in South Korea.

His North Korean art displayed only happy faces of the people pledging their allegiance to their leader. No matter the hardships North Koreans endured, as a propaganda artist, Byeok reproduced cheerful and communal acts on posters to boost the loyalty of North Koreans to Kim. Now 42 years old, Byeok reflects on his former tasks with AFP reporter Jung Ha-Won. Life as a propaganda artist was not easy [] one fellow artist was dragged to a prison camp overnight for misspelling a state edict and never seen again. Byeok produced hundreds of paintings, but being a lowly artist he would not have dared to paint a portrait of Kim. But as a free man in Seoul, Byeok now paints pictures that depict North Koreas craving for freedom and portrays Kim Jong-Il with his head on Marilyn Monroes body, whereas, in other pictures, people are dressed in uniforms and bowing before a statue of Kim. In other works by Byeok, the wings of a bird frequently appear. This is the message of the desire to fly freely. Theres a dream to freedom in the mind of every North Korean citizen. So a lot of doves, butterflies have been included in the works. He said, In South Korea, every painter can draw anything they want, so the work of one artist can reflect their own personality. To say what I want to say, to draw what I want to draw, is the freedom Ive been looking for. He started painting just three years ago. Byeok diligently painted expressive portraits that were showcased in his first exhibition titled, Forever Freedom at the Gaia gallery in Jongno, Seoul, earlier this year. At the gallery, he was able to display thirty different revealing paintings of anger, the cry for freedom, and pleas for help. His hope is to reach as many people as possible and inspire all to think of how to help those trapped voices that echo powerlessly under the eccentric regime. written by Dean Seo translated by Sehee Lee proofed by SooYoung Kim you sit back and casually enjoy some tea. Its just dreamy. Jeju Island beckons you with some modern attractions. People think of Jeju Island as a good tourist spot with beautiful mountains and natural volcanic formations - the paradise of Korea, if you will. Jeju Island has recently added some new attractions over the years, which we can participate in, and all of which appeal to tourists. EcolaND ForEsT TraIN This locomotive became the first train on Jeju Island after Jeju Ecoland brought it over from Britain for visitors and residents alike. Visitors can visit Gotjawal, a naturally formed forest located on the center of the slopes of Halla Mountain, feeling the fresh air and traveling through nature in a steam-engine train of the good old days while enjoying beautiful views. The full trip takes around 50 minutes, and the trains run every 30 minutes. YacHTING Year-round yachting is available at the Jungmun Tourist Resort Complex, which is the largest luxury resort in Korea. There are many interesting sites to visit and also great hotels such as Shilla Hotel, Lotte Hotel, and Hyatt Hotel, all internationally well-known, often attracting celebrities to visit from abroad. There is also Jusangjeolli, a spectacular arrangement of volcanic rock. A boat brings you right up to the formation while

Those who seek some romantic events can charter a $1.8 million boat called the Shangri-La to tie the knot with a lover just like in movies that we often see. Heo Ok-seok, president of Jungmun Marine Park, was the first one who obtained a yacht license in Korea. He is in charge of running yacht tours, and now is managing a wedding yacht business meeting the demands of the newest paradigm. Young ladies want a unique experience, different from usual weddings, where countless congratulators stop by just to customarily clap and give brides and grooms an envelope with some money. The most important and beautiful event in our lives can now be appropriately represented by the yacht wedding service, which offers a superior experience for nearly the same price as the average wedding. Charter fares are between 300,000 won and 500,000 won for 70 minutes. Since Jeju Island is a popular honeymoon destination, Heo can help you plan your wedding ceremony, combining it with an unparalleled yachting experience. The yacht is equipped with a king-size bed, shower facilities and, of course, your own personal noraebang! The chef can even make sushi with fresh fish caught from the ocean. claY pIGEoN sHooTING Clay pigeon shooting, formally known as skeet shooting, can be another way of enjoying Jeju Island, instead of simply relaxing. By shooting a rifle at an orange clay disk that flies in the sky at about 90 kilometers per hour, your stress is shattered much like the clay disk. For only 35,000 won, you

receive 12 shots. Children under the age of 14 are not allowed on the premises.

Daeyoo Land, about a 10-minute car ride from the Jungmun Tourist Resort, offers clay pigeon shooting, as well as allterrain vehicles (ATV) equipped with three or four wheels, available to rent. It is the only place in all of Asia that is open all year round and lets visitors shoot without any need of a license. JEJUs lovElaND The understandable nervous giggles and carvings that we are used to hearing and seeing everywhere in Korea are especially prevalent in Loveland. There are erotic vignettes such as penises, trees with wooden dicks, and Greek statues making love. When it comes to Jeju Island, our first thought is of a perfect honeymoon destination, and this area adds to the honeymoon festivities. Those visiting have no choice but to nod their heads at the sign that reads, Adults only. Entrance fee is 9,000 won. Operating hours are from 9:00 to 24:00. KEYWORDS: Beckon you - . . written by Dean Seo translation and keywords by Yujeong Lee As we live in a globalized world, its becoming more and more common for people from different countries to meet, and consequently dine with, each other. So, table manners are now one of the most important things that we should be familiar with. Table manners were originally introduced during the Victorian era of the 19th century in England, when public morality and formality were strictly kept. In order to dine properly with each other, however, we need a little insight into the varying etiquettes of different cultures. In doing so, we can ensure that we make the most of our international soirees. JapaN Low tables and cushions on the floor, rather than chairs and tables that are the common western style are the usual fashion. Thus, restaurants with low tables showcase the traditional Japanese style. In Japan, its highly recommended to say itadakimasu, which means I gratefully receive, before you begin your meal. When eating, its common in certain restaurants or private households to share several dishes of food at the table, rather than having each person order an individual dish. Indeed, serving chopsticks are typically provided for dishing outfood from the shared plates onto your own, or else you can use the opposite end of your chopsticks. If you are wondering whether or not its okay to slurp while eating, slurping is pretty common and simply means that

you are enjoying the meal with gusto. Burping, which could be witnessed post meal in Korea and other parts of East Asia, is considered bad manners in Japan, especially when you do it loudly. If ever invited to a Japanese household for dinner, empty your dishes to the last grain of rice, and after eating, try to arrange all of your dishes back to the same position as when you firstbroke bread. Then theyll think of you as a person with good manners. cHINa A round dining table is more popular in China than a rectangular or square one that we are used to seeing in western countries. One of the biggest differences between China and western countries with respect to table manners is that in China, dishes are placed in the center of the table, and shared by guests and host alike. This means that you should feel free to help yourself throughout the meal. Also, you must offer thanks as a sign of honor when your Chinese host serves food from the dishes onto your plate. As you may have noticed, chopsticks are the single most important utensil in Asia, and China is no exception. Since using chopsticks properly is no small feat, respect the chopstick and never try to skewer food, however tempting it may be, as you would with a fork. Age seniority is one of the customs that you should always keep in mind. Passing food to those senior to you before taking it for yourself at the table is an example of such a custom. It is a custom in China, unlike Japan or Korea, that if you are invited to a formal banquet, all the dishes should not be finished entirely, or you will break the unspoken bond between

you and your host and imply that the host has not provided a good banquet and has prepared insufficient food. KorEa Since etiquette is very important to Koreans, there is a lot of emphasis surrounding it when you have meals or drinks. Although some of the older traditions have relaxed in recent years, some traditional Korean table manners and etiquette are still in use. As always in Asia, its a good way of showing your thanks to say Jalmukesumneda (I will eat well) in Korea before you eat. Koreans use chopsticks for most food, but also use a spoon for rice and soups, although some prefer to use chopsticks for rice, instead. Koreans dont hold the bowl of soup or rice during the meal, however, as you might do in other Asian countries like China or Japan. If you have a meal with the elderly, you should wait for them to put the spoon or chopsticks on the table at the end of the meal first, and its considered rude if one leaves the table before the elder finishes. masons in religious carving, but what do they ever known? I think they have always relied too much on common sense. In 1432, it was documented that 1000 stone Buddhas and 1000 stone pagodas occupied the temple ground. After more than a millennium and the kingdom switching from Buddhist to Neo-Confucian, only 91 Buddhas still scattered across the area. Visiting the temple is like visiting an outdoor museum with Buddhas lined up along the paths and tucked into the trees. Most have little left to identify them by, but they all have their charm. The features are simple and a bit awkward, common among themselves but unique to the temple. The pagodas, having to contend with gravity, are even worse off, but a few of the 21 still standing are remarkable. One is designed with seven concave disks, rather than the usual square stones. Just before it sits a house-like, single storey pagoda with a pair of rather stalky, square-looking Buddhas rooted in prayer inside. They look as though they may be long-lost relatives of the folks over at Easter Island, but theyll never tell. A short hike up the slope, nestled in the pines are the two Wa-Bul, Lying Buddhas. Theyre big enough that I can see why the poor mason who carved them, heavenly or otherwise, would have booked it back to the clouds rather than try to lift them. There must have been some other heavenly beings better suited for the task, and if they werent willing to do it, we cant very well blame our friend the mason. Part of the charm of the temple is that I had to take a bus from Gwangju about 40km to nowhere, then transfer to the bus that dropped me off a couple of kilometers from the temple. The countryside is covered in old buildings, rice fields, and small, pointy, green mountains. Not a single apartment building can be seen in any direction, only the locals tending their gardens. It is places like this that make me feel happy to be in Korea. In university, I took an introductory philosophy class with a Dr. Nick Webb. It was one of the few classes outside of my studio classes that I really enjoyed, and it probably influenced my way of thinking more than any other class Id taken. One day in class, he briefly brought up the topic of common sense and asked if we thought there really is such a thing. Like most topics he confronted us with, it was one I had never considered on my own. That was about six years ago, and I still havent thought about it much, but every once in a while it comes back to me for a time that funnels back down into the depths of my unconscious. Sorting through some old photos this week, I came across some shots from a particular trip that really got me thinking about common sense again. At this point, I have settled on the theory that common sense is quite relative; I wonder if there are contributing factors to common sense, like geography, age, or what era you were born in. Common sense in villages I passed through in India or Nepal is probably different from the common sense of the people from the small village where I grew up. My own sense did not seem on

par with most of the people I grew up around, or the people I met in Nepal and India for that matter. Of all our senses, any that could be deemed universally sensible do not seem very common, at least from my point of view. Over a thousand years ago in Korea, it was common sense that the larger allotment of mountains in the southeastern region of the peninsula created such an imbalance that the peninsula was at risk of capsizing. Fortunately, the monk Do Seon Guk Sa took matters into his own hands and prayed to the heavens to send down a few masons to carve 1000 stone Buddhas and 1000 stone pagodas to balance things out. All night they chiseled and carved until they heard the first sound of a roosters crow, signally their time to return to the heavens. If only roosters had a snooze button, maybe they would have had time to complete their task, but as roosters cock-a-doodle when they do, two large stone Buddhas were left lying in the hills. They say a better explanation for all the statues and pagodas is that the temple was opened as a place to train

aliENs iN MoViEs
written by tabatha Lamb translated by Yuji jang proofreading by SooYoung Kim Over the past few years, there have been a number of alienfocused movies to hit the big screen. In 2009, the most anticipated film of the year was Avatar. In 2010, we saw films such as Megamind, Monsters, and Skyline. In 2011, we will see an additional eight or nine alien movies hit theaters. All of these sure to either make your hair stand on end, move you to the edge of your seat, or make you laugh out loud. Some of these titles include Cowboys and Aliens, The Darkest Hour, Area 51, Super 8, Paul, I Am Number Four, Iron Sky and Battle: Los Angeles. Cowboys and Aliens stars Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, and Daniel Craig. While the film has a few big names, the storyline is what will draw in the viewers. The storyline follows the code of the old west. It is sure to bring a greater understanding of what would have happened if aliens had invaded in the late 1800s. Emile Hirsch is the biggest name in The Darkest Hour. This film is about a young group of tourists who are traveling in Russia when aliens attack the earth. There isnt much out about this film yet, but the rumor is that the script is really well written. I guess we will find out when it finally hits theaters in August. Area 51 was scheduled to be released sometime between 2010 and 2011. It should be out sometime soon, but the exact date has still not yet been released. Area 51 has been described as having a similar filming style to The Blair Witch Project. Paul has an all-star cast including Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Seth Rogen, Jason Bateman, and Kristen Wiig. Paul, an alien comedy movie due out in 2011, is a story about two comic book buffs that meet an alien outside of Area 51 while traveling to a comic book convention. Between the director, Greg Mottola, and the cast, Paul should be an interestingly funny movie. Although the list of upcoming films is great, we have yet another film to explore - Battle: Los Angeles. This film has been getting a lot of attention over the last few months. It is due out in March and has a great cast of stars, including Aaron Eckhart, Bridget Moynahan, and Michelle Rodriguez. However, if the power names do not draw your attention, maybe the storyline will. The captivating storyline begins slowly, introducing the idea of meteors heading towards the earth. The storyline quickly picks up speed, as the presumed meteors turn out to be alien ships heading to Earth to colonize the human population. The title of the movie is also brought to our attention after every major city in the world is taken over, except Los Angeles. Los Angeles becomes the last battleground between humans and aliens in this quick-paced film. The film is equated to the last stand in a war between two countries, because the battle rages between the aliens and the military for a majority of the movie, ending in an all-out battle in the final city of Los Angeles. 2011 looks like it will be a great year for alien films. We will have a good mixture of comedies, dramas, and war movies. With all of these great films coming out, alien fans might never leave the theater. Release Dates: Cowboys and Aliens-August 11, 2011 (Korea) The Darkest Hour- August 5, 2011 (US) Area 51- October 21, 2011 (Sweeden) Super 8-June 10, 2011 (US) Paul- March 18, 2011 (US) I Am Number Four- February 24, 2011 (Korea) Iron Sky-undecided Battle: Los Angles-April 1, 2011 (Korea)

ate wonderful characters that seem to leap off of the screen. While Paz is becoming a recognized name in todays world, she started out the way most young actors do by modeling and doing some independent film work. She has performed in over twenty feature films in the past few years, and she has slowly become a well known figure in the visual arts world. She has also portrayed roles in such films as Chelsea Walls and A Walk to Remember. She has tried her hand at directing herself in a few films, and Gaspar No, Enter the Void director, said that he noticed her gift for directing before he noticed her acting abilities. Paz has had a number of successes in the acting world, but her appearance on Boardwalk Empire could be just the thing she needs to skyrocket her career into superstar status. On Boardwalk Empire, Paz plays the mistress, Lucy, of a head gangster in Prohibition-era Atlantic City, New Jersey. Her boyfriend on the show is Enoch, played by Steve Buscemi, and is directed by none other than Martin Scorsese. The lineup, the directing, and the storyline, should prove that this show will probably be a hit wherever it is shown around the world. The success of this show will also likely solidify Pazs place in the performing arts world.

While her name is long and her career relatively new, Pazs personality and behaviors are legendary in her circle of friends and family. Facebook advertisements may be trying to convince you that the world is going to end in 2011, but if the sheer volume of epic music slated for 11 release is any indicator, the ads are right. So stock up on canned beans, duct tape, and enough Kleenex to stop the imminent nosebleed that this list is gonna bring on. Cake Showroom of Compassion (1/11/2011) Arguably some of the most creative and intriguing songwriters alive, Cake took a 7-year hiatus in preparation for their most recent release. Though I cant really anticipate this one anymore (since I already got it), I suggest you begin anticipating it right now, to make up for how much you missed. This album is a clear message to the world that Cake is far from finished pushing genre limits. Truly music for musicians. 2) Beastie Boys The Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2 (Spring 2011) The boys have put albums into your hands since 1986 and havent slowed down since day one. Their latest cut is special for two reasons: 1) after ages of way too much confusion, THSC Pt 2 will finally be released prior to Pt 1, which many say is a dead project 2) THSC takes these pioneers back to where they began and back to where they dominate. 3) Red Hot Chili Peppers (No Title Announced) (6/2011) This unnamed album is the first major production the Peppers have put out since 2006s Stadium Arcadium. More than that, the world is chomping at the bit to hear how the Peppers perform with new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer who will replace Frusciante, who announced he was gone for good in 2009. 4) Kanye West/ Jay Z Watch the Throne (3/1/2011) The love child of two of modern hip-hops giants has the eyes of everyone in the industry. The combined effect these two artists have had on the genre is so large its practically tangible. So what will happen when these two collaborate in the studio for a full album? I know only one way to find out. 5) Travis Barker Give The Drummer Some (2/22/11) This one makes the list for more than a few reasons. If you dont know who Travis Barker is, you are wrong. Barker has done percussion for 7 respectable bands and nearly a hundred side projects. His current occupation: being respected as possibly the greatest percussionist of our time. This marks the first serious attempt for a drummer to put together a respectable solo project. 6) Dr. Dre Detox (4/20/2011) This one should be pretty self-explanatory. Dre announced work on his third solo studio album in 2000 and reportedly began real work on the album in 2003. So why is it just coming out now? Well for those of you who somehow dont know this, Dr. Dre spent the last 10 years producing a laundry list of the best of hip-hop. The reason theyre at number one is because their new album White Rabbit is scheduled for release on May 17th of this year. Now this is a little while away but, until then, you can check out their previous album or savor the EP they released to the press last week. #2) Chiddy Bang On a different note, this group fresh out of Philly provides an interesting take on hip-hop. It is the largest social network site in South Korea, and has over 25 million members. It is dubbed by users as the Korean Facebook. Maybe that is the problem. Despite its popularity, Cyworld is still mainly used only by Koreans and does not have international appeal. Recent statistics shows that Cyworld is struggling to retain its competitive edge and is failing to attract more users.

Korean girl groups are putting out (The word dropping seems more appropriate for the article.) some new beats recently, both on the music scene and in the news. The Brown Eyed Girls Koreas fifth most popular girl band, the Brown Eyed Girls (or B.E.G.) debuted in 2006 and released a variety of singles that helped the group achieve its claim to fame. Cyworld is owned by the largest telecom firm in South Korea, SK Communications, and was forced to shut down its business in the United States in November 2010 after a failed $110 million investment in online business. Cyworld has also been forced to shut down its services in other countries, such as Germany and Taiwan. Cyworld is now used only in South Korea, China, and Vietnam. The irony is that Cyworld was once a leading social networking services competitor in international countries. Cyworld was launched by four KAIST graduates in 1999 and became thrillingly successful. Cyworld initially attracted users by allowing them to create mini blogs, post pictures, and decorate their cyber houses. What could have lead to its recent failures? The first answer may lie in the fact that

Cyworld did not have a uniform market and each country used the site differently. Facebook has a singular market and actively networks with different Internet applications. Another reason may be that Facebook users have different priorities than Cyworld users. Facebook users value openness, convenience, simplicity, and the ability to use different applications, simultaneously. With tour sites and dates posted, be sure to give this alternative rock group a listen, while you wait for their next album, Tony Was an Ex-Con, set to release later this year. With the impending new British invasion, you might want to get used to it now. #5) War Paint This West Coast L.A. band is sure to be something new to you. With an indierock/jazz sound, this all-female band is worth a deep look, especially since they got to work with both past and present Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarists. Its sure to be a new experience. Their recent debut album is The Fool.

7)

PJ Harvey Let England Shake (2/14/2011) PJ Harvey is a legend in her own right, and the recent addition to her claim on music will make a fine notch in her belt. Harvey is famous for reinventing her style from album to album, and Let England Shake is no exception. This dark, brooding album will change the tone faster than most bands can change keys.

JYJ Their Rooms (Our Story) (date unannounced) JYJ came into existence when members of TVXQ sued their record company over contract unfairness and WON!! Following that, they announced that under their new label they would begin composing their own music and writing their own lyrics. Will it be good? I dont know. But, either way, its a whole new ball game.

The Streets Computers and Blues (2/7/2011) Mike Skinner, aka The Streets, has been a force to be reckoned with in the British hiphop scene since he first started making music in 2000. Able to totally reinvent his genre to fit in with his lyrical, philosophical, and emotional needs, he became famous as one of the most diverse and creative artists out there. But all good things come to an end. Skinner swore he would burn the house down with this, his fifth and final album.

10) Foo Fighters Wasting Light (4/12/2011) This album probably isnt what most Foo Fighters fans are expecting. Dave Grohl has clearly taken this project in a new, much harder direction than they are used to. However, you can be sure that its still the same Foo Fighters feeling that Grohls brilliant songwriting has cultivated.

Though she may have achieved that golden ratio, Narsha was also chosen as the girl with the fewest muscles. Kara KARA, the 5-member group signed by DaeSung Entertainment, made headlines recently. Reported conflicts with its agency, DSP Media led some of its members to consider breaking their contracts to leave KARA. However, the KARA Syndrome rippled through Japan and the group is now more popular than ever before. The girls spoke at a press conference earlier this month saying that they are staying together, and on February 3rd, the group flew to Tokyo to begin filming of URAKARA, a Japanese television drama. Girls Generation As the New Year rolled around, so did new years resolutions. On the Lunar New Year Program What are you doing celebrity? Girls Generation shared its daily diet. The members are on 1,500-calorie diets that consist of seasonal veggies, chicken, and brown rice to get the girls healthy before returning to work. Girls Generation, formed in 2007 by SM Entertainment, is a nine-member group whose 2009 hit single Gee holds the record for the longest-running song in the #1 spot on KBS Music Bank for nine consecutive weeks. (The previous sentence is long and awkward. Also there is a lack of parallelism between the use of it and who. Consider revision.) 2NE1 2NE1 sparked some controversy by failing to appear on any of the three major television channels throughout the recent holidays. "For their own sake, we are trying not to overwork the singers," said Hyunsoek Yang, representative of YG Entertainment, the company that owns 2NE1. 2NE1 is a girls group formed in 2009 whose debut song Fire was dubbed as unconventional and impressive. 2NE1 is the first female group to win both the Artist of the Year and the Album of the Year awards at the Mnet Asian Music Awards in 2010. The Wonder Girls Finally, the Wonder Girls are currently working in the studio with Claude Kelly. Kelly, a singer-songwriter, has written songs for and worked with famous American artists such as the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Akon, and Kelly Clarkson. Just had a recording session with Claude Kelly! Cool Gangsta style haha, Hyerim, one of the groups members, posted to Twitter. Continued from pg 21: Cyworld struggles to retain relveancy other Internet firms. Cyworld members value privacy over openness and it can be difficult to find active friends on the site. Cyworld users exclude many people by using members only clubs and cafes; whereas Facebook users are more open to adding new friends and joining different groups. The creator of Facebook was recently featured in a motion picture that was nominated for multiple awards. This publicity adds to Facebooks international appeal, whereas Cyworld is still seen as a SNS site for Koreans. Despite the setbacks, do not count on Cyworld to bow out to Facebook anytime soon. Cyworld is revamping its services and seeking to evolve to fit international members needs. Interlocking it with local services, we will nurture Cyworld into a global service from the countrys kingpin, said Lee Tae-shin, representative for Cyworld. Reflecting on past failures, we will link users to their friends and make a standard platform. We wont be targeting 6 billion people. We will focus on youths in their teens and 20s, and females, Lee Tae-shin told reporters. In the next couple of years, perhaps a German SNS user will be able to log on to Cyworld easily from a coffee shop in Paris. Time will be the indicator if Cyworld will be able to retain its relevancy for people around the world.
