ASSESSMENT: ESSAY
1. Why is it important for Gender Co-coordinators to have a good working
knowledge of the history, mission statement, and policy of the organization?

History, mission statement, and policy. These important tools are responsible
for a better workplace and environment. These enables every organization to be in
place, to give itself a purpose, and to serve as fuel and foundation.

When it comes to history, we are all aware how the past contributes to the
present and the future. With the knowledge of organization’s past, individuals will be
able to have a better understanding of all the records of the organization and how it
works. With this fact, a better future will be shaped. Moreover, understanding change
in context, corporate culture, and organization requires a thorough understanding of
history. For instance, hiring new employees can be a stressful transition for an
organization. Even though new hires are extremely talented, but they frequently lack
historical context, which can pose difficulties when they join a new organization. Just
like any other coordinators, gender co-coordinators are no excuse to grasping an
organization’s history for it to have good and smooth working flow.

Next to knowing history, it is also crucial to have a knowledge of the mission

statement. Since it is a summary of an organization’s goals and values, it is important
for the gender co-coordinators to learn this mission statement to help leaders to align
all employees' efforts toward a goal regardless of gender as well as to guide their
actions and organizational initiatives. Aside from this, mission statements
communicate an organization’s values to its community in terms of generating
interest in the strategies that it develops and serves as good way to steer a company in
the right direction, and they can assist a company in making sound decisions that
benefit the revenue stream. Hence, if someone knows nothing about the mission
statement of an organization, it will struggle to plan for the future.

Policies, on the other hand, play an essential role in every organization.

According to “The Importance of Policy and Procedure,” of Sanelli (2018), policies
cover essential concerns such as what constitutes effective employee behavior. This
fact simply indicates that it is the policy that enables workers to comply with the
acceptable standard behavior. Furthermore, training managers on workplace policies
is the first step in properly handling employee behavior. This ensures that managers
have a complete awareness of what behavior is acceptable and how to correct
inappropriate behavior especially when it is regarding gender. Likewise, if your
company can demonstrate that attempts were made to educate and train staff through
policy and education, it can present an affirmative defense in the event that a case like
the one described above goes to court.

Above all, gender co-coordinators are in charge of making the workplace and
environment a better place to work. It is a need for them to have an understanding of
history, business culture, and organization necessitates. It is also critical for all the
individuals in an organization to understand the mission statement in order to help
each other organize their efforts toward a common purpose and assist in steering it in
the proper direction.

2. What specific challenges have you encountered or do you expect to encounter as

you support implementation of this policy?

In the implementation of Gender and Development Policy, we tend to not

prevent the cases of facing challenges. Among the challenges that are now
existing, some are circling around the rising of sexist hate speech and other forms
of violence against women, assaults on women's reproductive health and rights,
reduced resources allocated to gender equality due to budgetary cuts and austerity
measures, and barriers preventing women from disadvantaged groups from
benefiting from gender equality policing. Aside from this, the quest for men
and women's equality has been hampered by a shroud of tradition and religion
that has stood in the way of critique and logic.

Additionally, another challenge is regarding the gender equality

movements having distinct ideas and perspective. The feminist movement should
never presume that all women have equal interests, or that these interests must
necessarily conflict with the equal interests of males. Likewise, when it comes to
influencing legislation, gender advocates must continue to use well-reasoned
arguments when proposing policy to legitimize the battle for equality, even when
it is solely economic. There are also the risks that gender advocates take and miss
chances when they treat women as a homogeneous group.

Moreover, given that women are typically at a disadvantage in the

workplace when compared to males, promoting gender and development
necessitates paying close attention to women's needs and viewpoints.
Simultaneously, there are considerable detrimental effects of unequal power
relations and expectations on men and boys as a result of stereotyping of what it
means to be a man. Instead, both men and women, as well as boys and girls,
should be allowed to develop their abilities and make decisions based on their
interests and capacities, without being constrained by conventional gender
stereotypes and preconceptions.

Gender has, however, been substantially accepted by mainstream

institutions, and now is the time for feminists to demand more transformational
acts. Gender advocates should never tolerate cultural purity and should always
demand equal social rights to avoid conflicts and garner enough support from all
genders.

All of these obstacles contribute to a persistent gap between gender

equality standards and their implementation.

3. What is your role in implementing GAD policy?

Implementing and promoting Gender and Development Policy is not

solely the responsibility of the organizations and institutions to which we belong.
It must also begin within ourselves, with our enthusiasm to put it into action.

In connection to this, I will start implementing GAD policy at home. Since

we are still in this pandemic, starting at home is a great start for me. First thing to
do is by sharing household chores. During the old times, we are used to women
doing all the household chores, but not anymore. Given that we already have
Gender and Development, there must be an equal distribution of the chores,
regardless of gender.

As an adult, I must recognize that there are distinctions between boys and
girls, even between women and men. It is important to be careful of words
whenever we talk, write, or having conversations to avoid gender stereotyping. It
is also better to not speak stereotypical characteristics because these limit
knowledge of gender roles and we tend to see just the one side of the picture.

As a student, I must assist my colleagues to identifying instances of

gender bias through awareness activities or historical events, laws, and cultural
changes. Since we are on this New Normal, it will be not easy to do this, but with
the help of social media platforms, I will be able to disseminate information
regarding gender and development.
To sum it up, empowering and promoting gender and development
through different means will start within us. Gender is an important factor to
consider in growth. It is a method of examining how social norms and power
structures influence the lives and opportunities available to various groups of men
and women. Hence, if we want to have a peaceful environment to live in, we must
all open our minds and support the policies of gender and development and
effectively play our roles in the implementation.
