RESTORING THE ESSENCE OF MUSIC

THROUGH ARCHITECTURE –
ETHNOMUSICOLOGY

ABSTRACT
Ethnomusicology is the study of music in its social and cultural contexts. The main goals include to
help protect and explain non-Western music, to save "folk" music before it disappears in the modern
world, to study music as a means of communication to further world understanding, and to provide an
avenue for wider exploration and reflection for those who are interested in primitive studies.
Ethnomusicology has a longstanding relationship with museum. Through the discourse, the report
explains the ways in which museums display musical instruments & encourage active music making
in their galleries, understanding the relationship between architecture and music, investigate the
nature of this relationship in the local context & finally understand through case studies the various
ways in which architectural forms can be abstracted from music.

INTRODUCTION
Architecture pleases the eye while music pleases the ear, and the interesting part is that they have
extreme similarities. The principle of architecture resembles with that of music (rhythm, proportion,
harmony, unity, repetition, etc.) Thus, it is said that,
“Architecture is said to be frozen music while music is said to be liquid architecture”
Many architects have used music and its theory to create architecture, while many musicians have
used their music pieces of architecture to help create music. If one were to study both architecture and
music, they would begin to understand the shared ideas between the two art forms.
Although this connection seems quite strong and well understood there are still individuals who
believe architecture should remain architecture and vice versa. They do not believe in any great
connection and feel architecture and music should remain void of each other.
Since I’m interested in music, I do believe that this is the perfect opportunity for me to understand in
depth about both the art forms and create a bridge between the two (especially with respect to the
traditional context) which might help me in creating stronger design ideas.
