PART 2: TRANSLATION PROJECT

I. RATIONALE

I have selected two source documents in English and Vietnamese with two
fields of politics and travel. Firstly, a topic of politics was selected for the
English-Vietnamese translation because the politics is a topic with a wide
range of political terms, which also deals with more complicated issues than
any other fields. In addition to that politics brings new challenges and gives
me new experiences in translation work later. Next, for the Vietnamese-
English translation, I have chosen the theme of tourism which has been
dramatically developed in Vietnam in the last few years. It is also a popular
topic on the web nowadays which seems to be a critical issue affected by the
Covid-19 pandemic. Moreover, this is an interesting topic in terms of content
as well as vocabulary that can help me to develop my different skills in
English during translation process.

PART 3. INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCES

I. INTRODUCTION

experience that offers professional work related to a student’s field of study or
career interest. It not only gives me the opportunity for further understanding
the theories and practicing translation skills that I have learned but also allows
me to get new professional experiences. The internship not only enriches my
knowledge but also develops my soft skills. Thanks to internships, students
would be able to apply these????? sort of knowledge and skills for getting Deleted: s

well-paid jobs. There is some basic information about internship at the

Faculty of English in 2022. Firstly, the goal is to help students to gain Deleted: f

knowledge, skills, and practice translation from the source language into the
target language and vice versa. Secondly, internship report is a comprehensive
homework for examining and evaluating the translation techniques and
capabilities of the student. Next, the mission of internship is to translate an
English source text to Vietnamese and a Vietnamese source text to English
(about 1000 words each). Finally, work assignments: registering internships
with faculty department, getting a list of internship and internship supervisors
from the faculty department, contacting supervisor for getting instructions,
finding source documents and beginning translating, writing internship report
and internship dairy, submitting the internship report to the supervisor for
getting advices, and completing internship report based on these advices.

II. PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES

2.1. What I have done

From November 20th 2022 to November 22nd 2022, I have registered
internship with the faculty department, contacted the supervisor for getting
instructions about internship and how to create internship report and I have
also searched for source texts from Internet. From November 23rd 2022 to
November 25th 2022, I researched the information and requirements of the
internship report, then noted down of the main contents and made a plan to do
the internship report. In the second week (November 28th 2022 to December
2nd 2022), I have read and referred to documents relating to English-
Vietnamese translation and Vietnamese - English translation. Then, I looked
for reputable websites where I could read online newspapers in both English
and Vietnamese. I third week (December 5th 2022 to December 9th 2022), I
also have chose an article in English at CNN politics of just over 1000 words
as source text for English-Vietnamese translation and a Vietnamese article
about tourism of over 1200 words on Tienphong Website as a source text for
Vietnamese-English translation. In the next week (December 12th 2022 to
December 16th 2022) I have spent the whole week translating this article and
analyzing difficulties in English - Vietnamese translation. In the fifth week
(December 19th 2022 to December 23rd 2022, I have translated the
Vietnamese article on the topic of tourism into English. In the last weeks
(December 26th 2022 to December 30th 2022), I have found and analyzed 10
best structures and give more examples about the uses in each text. After that,
I have written my internship experiences and completed my internship report.
I have followed these steps during the translation process. The first step is
carefully read the entire source texts and look up new words. It is important
to pay attention to difficult words and phrases and look them up in both the
source and target languages. Then, I carefully read and researched the article
to understand its meaning and context, determine the appropriate audiences,
style for translation before starting the translation process.

I have got valuable experiences from the internship period such as learning
time management technique, how to work under pressure and finish work on Deleted: ,

time. I have also had chances for applying translation theories and skills that I
had learned during the past two years. An interesting thing is that I had
acquired a number of new words and structures that helps me to translate
faster and more effectively. Another skill I have learned is to be extremely
organized and stick to my schedule. It is critical for me to stay on track when
working on multiple tasks at the same time. Being organized, which is
regarded as one of the essential translation skills, will save me a lot of time
when working on important tasks. The internship also allowed me to develop
my soft skills that will enable me to complete my work more quickly and
professionally, improve my translating and writing skills.

I have studied a wide range of translation skills, from basic translation to
advanced translation, during the last two years at Faculty of English. Those
techniques and skills have been employed during my internship to complete
the internship requirements. That was a combination of reading, writing,
translation, and analysis skills.
I have learned how to choose the appropriate words, how to make
grammatically correct sentences, how to write paragraphs with consistency
and connection of ideas, and how to put all of the sections together into a
complete translation that conveys the original text's content coherently and
comprehensively.

2.4. Problems encountered

The first issue is that many English words have different meanings based on Deleted: it

contexts. On some occasions, I have selected a particular meaning for

translation, but later on I found that it was not an appropriate meaning for that
context. Therefore, I had to consider carefully to find the suitable meaning for Deleted: So

of different knowledge and skills that help to improve my translation ability.

and skills that I have learnt. Apart from that, I have found that my translation
skills have significantly improved with such amount of new vocabulary,
grammar structures and practical translation techniques. I have also gained

After completing the internship, I would like to have some specific proposals
