REVIEW OF ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

An ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION
is a combination of ordinary num
bers and letters which represent
numbers.

REVIEW OF ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

An ALGEBRAIC TERM consists

of products and quotients of ordin
ary numbers and letters which
represent numbers.
EXAMPLES:

TERM
TERMS

One factor of a term is said to be the

coefficient of the rest of the term.

Thus in the term 5x3y2, 5x3 is the co

efficient of y2, 5y2 is the coefficient
of x3, and 5 is the coefficient of x3y2.
TERMS

If a term consists of the product of an

ordinary number and one or more let
ters, we call the number the numeric
al coefficient.

Thus in -5x3y2, -5 is the numerical co

efficient or simply the coefficient.
TYPES OF ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS
CLASSIFICATION OF POLYNOMIALS

DEGREE:
Sum of all the exponents in the
variables in the term.

4x3y2z

Degree = 3 + 2 + 1 = 6
CLASSIFICATION OF POLYNOMIALS

DEGREE:
7x3y2 - 4xz5 + 2x3y
COMPUTATION

Addition of algebraic expressions

is achieved by combining like term
s. In order to accomplish this addit
ion, the expressions may be arran
ged in rows with like terms in the s
ame column; these columns are th
en added.
ALEBRATIC OPERATIONS

Add 7x + 3y3 4xy, 3x 2y3 + 7xy, and 2xy - 5x - 6y3

.

Subtract 2x2 - 3xy+ 5y2 from 10x2 - 2xy -3y2

ALEBRATIC OPERATIONS

Multiply 3x2y3z, 2x4y, and 4xy4z2.

Divide 24x4y2z3 by 3x3y4z.

FACTORING POLYNOMIALS

The factors of a given algebraic e

xpression consist of two or more a
lgebraic expressions which when
multiplied together produce the gi
ven expression
FACTORING POLYNOMIALS

Example:

(a)x2 - 7x + 6
(b) x2 + 8x
(c) 6x2 - 7x - 5
(d ) x2 + 2xy - 8y2

Factorization Procedures

2. Difference of two squares.

Type: a2 - b2 = (a + b)(a - b)

x2 - 25
FACTORING POLYNOMIALS

Factorization Procedures

Perfect square trinomials.

Types: a2 + 2ab + b2 = (a + b)2

x2 + 6x + 9
ACTIVITY

Find the degree of each of the following

polynomials.
(a)2x3y + 4xyz4.
(b) x2 + 3x3 - 4.
(c) y3 - 3y2 + 4y
(d) xz3 + 3x2z2 - 4x3z + x4.
