1. Consider the two-dimensional hexagonal lattice structure of graphene as shown below.

Let 𝑎⃗1 and 𝑎⃗2 be the primitive lattice vector given by

𝑎⃗1 = 𝑎𝑥̂
𝑎 √3𝑎
𝑎⃗1 = 𝑥̂ + 𝑦̂
2 2
Here a is the length of the primitive vector. The basis of two carbon atoms A and B is shown
in the figure. Calculate the reciprocal lattice vector and sketch the reciprocal lattice vector.
2. Calculate the packing fraction of the Hexagonal closed Packed structure.
3. Explain the basic assumptions of the Drude model. What are the failures of the Drude model?
How much error in the value of specific heat of metal by the Drude model as compared to the
experimental result and what is the reason for this error?
4. State Bloch’s theorem (derivation not required) and discuss the origin of the band gap in the
light of the Kroning-Penny model (detailed mathematical derivation is not required).
5. Show that Bragg’s law holds in reciprocal lattice and find out the vector form of Bragg’s law
in reciprocal lattice.
6. Write down the boundary k values (kx and ky) for the square lattice in the first Brillouin zone.
𝑐 𝑙
7. If the potential energy is given y 𝑈 = − 𝑥 6 + 𝑥 12. Find out the U at equilibrium distance(xe) in
terms of c. where x is the interatomic distance and c & 𝑙 are constant.
