End Semester Examination, April 2022.
B.Tech, First semester
Course Code: 1101 Course Name: Material Science
Date of Exam: 20.04.2022
Time: 3 Hours, M. Marks: 50 Name of Faculty: Prof ( Dr) BB Jha
Note: Lengthy answers must be avoided. Answers to the questions need be
crisp, precise and to the points. All questions are necessary and carry marks
as distributed. Missing data, if any, may be assumed appropriately

Question 1: 3+4+3
a) Calculate the range of Band Gap energies of semiconductor if we
desire them to emit light in the visible range after photon
bombardment having wide range of frequencies.
b) Write down the expression for energy of an Electron ( E ) with wave
number (k). Draw the E vs k curve of electron based on free electron
theory and zone theory and explain why are they different.
c) The fraction of non- reflected light that has transmitted through a
glass of 200 mm thickness is 0.90. Calculate the absorption co-
efficient of this material.
Question 2: 4+2+4
a) Differentiate between intrinsic and impurity semiconductors by
giving suitable examples and drawing their band gap diagrams.
b) Why the mobility of electron is always greater than hole.
c) The velocity of sound in steel is different in longitudinal and shear
direction, explain why?
Question 3: 5+5

a) Explain the term Thermal Fatigue. In which situations it is very

prevalent. Write down the mechanical properties of the metal which
are most affected by thermal fatigue.
b) If, for carbon steel, operating at 140 MPa, the Larson Miller
parameter (LMP ) is 24000. Calculate the time of rupture of this
material at 800 0C. Where as ,
LMP = T(20+logtr); tr = time to rupture in hour and T is in deg Kelvin
Question 4: 3+3+4
a) What is ferroelecricity and how is it different from piezoelectricity.
b) Explain the ferroelectric behaviour of Barium Titanate by drawing
neatly its crystal structure and positioning of ions.
c) Why the ferroelectric behaviour of Barium Titanate ceases to
operate above Curie temperature.
Question 5: 3+3+5
a) Explain why solubility of carbon in alpha iron is much less than
Austenite.
b) Draw the phase diagram of two solids A and B which are immiscible
in solid state as well as in liquid state
c) Write down all the three invariant reactions in Fe-C diagram and
calculate the amount of cementite and Ferrite in Eutectoid steel at
723 degree centigrade.
