I prefer watching TV to playing video games. prefer + ing + to + ing

I like apples better than oranges. like + noun + better than + noun
I like watching TV better than playing video games. like + ing + better than + ing

Ann would rather have an apple than an orange. would rather + base form
WRONG: Ann would rather has an apple. WRONG: would rather + simple present

I’d rather visit a big city than live there. than + base form
WRONG: I’d rather visit a big city than to live there. WRONG: than + infinitive
WRONG: I’d rather visit a big city than living there. WRONG: than + ing

We’d rather you stayed home. would rather + obj + simple past

INTERROGATIVE: Would you rather have an apple or an invert the position of would and the subject
orange?
NEGATIVE: They’d rather not go out than risk their health. not comes before the base form
