We can confuse us easily between would like and like, both share a certain formal similarity, is
the present and the conditional of the same verb “to like”. However, between verbal forms
would like and like there is a difference in the meaning and use of this.

The verb like is a present verb form, for example:

- I like reading.
- He likes reading.
- Does she like reading? No, she doesn’t like reading.

The would like is the conditional form of the verb “to like” and is integrated by the auxiliary
would and the infinitive verb short. This is an invariable verbal form all subjects.

For example:

- I would like to become a doctor.

- She would like to become a nurse.

We can use the contracted form ´d like:

Image 15. Hands
- I´d like to become an engineer.
- He´d like to become a lawyer.

The question with would like are elaborated by the inversion of the auxiliary and the subject.
For example:

- Would you like to become an architect?

No, I wouldn’t “would not” like to become an architect.

We use the verb “to like” to talk about activities that we do regularly and enjoy doing.

For example:

- I like running in the morning around the park.

- She likes travelling for different countries.

The verb would like may be a more formal way of saying “want”. Also, is used to talk about plans
or imaginary situations that don’t exist today.

For example:

- I would like a hamburger, please.

- I would like to study French next year.

NOTE: The verb like can also be together by an infinitive, without affecting the meaning of the
sentence.

 Like with nouns:

- I like candies, but I don´t like eat a lot.

- She likes Italian comedy, but she doesn´t like Italian novels.

 Like with gerund:

- They like going shopping.

- He likes listening to music, but he doesn´t like going to concerts.

3. Complete the conversation in the restaurant.

Waiter: Hello, what can I get you this night?

Customer: Hi, I like the steak, please.
Waiter: Perfect. you like anything to drink?
Customer: Yes, I _ a glass of white wine, please.

Image 16. Champagne

We often use the verbs like prefer and would prefer to talk or ask about preferences.

For example:

- Would you prefer to see a film or go to the party?

- I prefer living in an apartment.
- She prefers reading books.
- I would prefer to see her in person.

We use prefer to talk generally about likes, dislikes, what we want. While that would prefer is
used to be a little more specific.

We can use prefer when talking about something you like more in general.

 Prefer + verb + ing:

a. I prefer buying online.

b. I prefer sleeping in the morning.
c. I prefer speaking English that Spanish.

 Prefer + infinitive with to:

a. I prefer to buy online.

b. I prefer to sleep in the morning.
c. I prefer to speak English that Spanish.

NOTE: We can use both ways to say something without changing its meaning.
Image 17. Options
We can also indicate that we prefer one thing to another with the next form.
Subject + prefer + noun + to + noun

For example:

- I prefer hamburger to sandwich.

- I prefer meat to chicken.
- I prefer tea to coke.
- I prefer salad to ice-cream.

To say that we prefer to do one thing to do another we can use the next form.

Subject + prefer + verb + ing + to + verb + ing

For example:

- I prefer going to the cinema to staying at work.

- I prefer reading a book to playing videogames.
- I prefer studying at home to reading in the university.
- I prefer dancing in the party to singing in the club.

The contracted form of would prefer is ´d prefer.

- I would prefer to go out.
