I. Part of a menu
At the restaurant, we can find menu to show the different dishes in groups. Menu is a list of food and
beverages offered to customers and the prices.

Parts of a menu, food and drink:


1. Starters / Appetizers: a small portion of a food served at the beginning of a meal to stimulate the
appetite.
2. Main course: The biggest dish of a meal in which there are different parts served separately.
3. Desserts: The sweet course served at the end of a meal.

II. Ways of cooking food

There are many ways that food can be cooked in a restaurant or at home. Cook is the action of
preparing food by combining, mixing, and heating ingredients. You will learn the vocabularies for
the different ways to cook food.

III. Verb + Infinitives and Verb + –ing


Verb + infinitive
An infinitive is basic form of a verb. It often acts as a noun and starts with the word “to.”
We use verb + infinitive after these verbs: hope, want, would like
Example:
1. I hope to try a special menu at this restaurant.
2. I’d like to drink orange juice.
3. I want to order fried chicken.
4. I don’t want to have spicy food
5. I don’t like to eat grilled fish

Verb + -ing
We use verb + -ing after these verbs: like, love, can’t stand, hate, enjoy
Example:
1. I like eating fried rice.
2. I hate drinking coffee.
3. I love having fruit salad for dessert.
4. I can’t stand eating sour food

We sometimes use like + infinitive to talk about habits or choices


Example:
1. I like to eat toast for breakfast
2. I like to ride a bike every morning

IV. Ordering Food in a Restaurant

Bryan and his family go to the restaurant. Read the conversation about ordering food in a
restaurant.

Waiter : Hello, Can I help you?


Mom : Yes, we'd like to have some lunch.
Waiter : Would you like a starter?
Bryan : Yes, I'd like a bowl of chicken soup, please.
Waiter : And what would you like for your main course?
Jenny : I'd like a grilled cheese sandwich.
Dad : I’d like sushi with cheese salmon
Waiter : Would you like anything to drink?
Bryan : Yes, I'd like a glass of orange juice, please.
Waiter : Would guava juice be OK? We don't have orange juice.
Bryan : That would be fine.
Waiter : (After Bryan’s family have their lunch.) Can I bring you anything else?
Mom : No thank you. Just the bill.
Waiter : Certainly.
Mom : I don't have my glasses. How much is the lunch?
Waiter : That's $6.75.

V. Writing an Email

Email, short for "electronic mail," is messages distributed by electronic means from one
computer user to one or more recipients via a network.
Emails are flexible and can be used for giving instructions, serving as documentation,
providing confirmation, communicating rules and procedures, making recommendations,
providing a status update, making an inquiry.
