Gate Valve

Gate valves are common valves used to start and stop fluid flow but are not well-suited for regulating or throttling flow. They have a simple design that is relatively inexpensive and easy to maintain by replacing discs or seat rings. However, gate valves experience turbulence and vibration when throttled that can damage internal parts, and their seating surfaces are more difficult to refurbish than globe valves.

Gate Valve

Gate valves are some of the most common valves currently employed. Gate valves
are used to start and stop flow, but are poorly suited for regulating (throttling) flow.

DISC SEAT

ADVANTAGES

Very simple in design, relatively cheap and easy to maintain.

Very low pressure drop across the valve when the valve is in the fully open position.

Replacement of the gate valve disc is easy.

Replacement of the seat rings (if fitted) is usually not a difficult task.

DISADVANTAGES

Gate valves are not well suited to throttling as this creates turbulent flow and frictional losses.

Compared to a globe valve, a gate valve’s seating surfaces are more difficult to refurbish.

Gate valves create turbulent flow when throttled and experience excessive vibration as
a result. This situation should be avoided to prevent any damage to the internal parts.
