1. Use Descartes’ Rule of Signs to determine the possible number of positive, negative and
imaginary zeros of P (x) .

(i) P (x) = x 4 + x 3 + x 2 + x + 12. (4)

(ii) P (x) = 2x 5 + x 4 + x 3 − 4x 2 − x − 3. (4)

2. Let P (x) = x 6 − 2x 5 − x 4 + x 3 + 2x 2 + x − 2

(a) Determine whether (x − 2) is a factor of P (x) . (2)

(b) Find all the possible rational zeros of P (x) by using the Rational Zeros Theorem. (2)
(c) Solve P (x) = 0. (4)

3. Find a fourth-degree polynomial with integer coefficients that has zeros 3i and −1, with −1 a
zero of multiplicity 2. (4)

4. Use the Upper and Lower Bounds Theorem to show that the real zeros of

(i) P (x) = x 4 − 2x 3 + x 2 − 9x + 2 lie between −2 and 3. (4)

(ii) P (x) = 2x 3 − 2x 3 − 5x 2 − x + 8 lie between −1 and 3. (4)

5. Decompose

(i)
x 5 − 2x 4 + x 3 + x + 5
x 3 − 2x 2 + x − 2
(5)

(ii)
4x 2 − 14x + 2
4x 2 − 1
(5)
