Consider
your ways

Introduction
Every year we pick a theme that guides our
ministry and the pulpit. In 2022, our theme
comes from Haggai 1:5 “consider your ways.”
The Israelites had been driven from their country
and had been held in captivity in Babylon
for seventy years. King Nebuchadnezzar had
destroyed their land; he had broken down the
wall surrounding Jerusalem, and had torn down
the Temple that Solomon had built for the Lord.
As the children of Israel returned to their
land, they began the repairing of the wall, and
the rebuilding of the Temple. They laid its
foundation once again.
But, over time they received some opposition.
Mostly the opposition was fierce, even life
threatening, as their surrounding enemies tried
to stop their progress. But, their enemies alone
did not defeat them, for they, themselves, with
their priorities misplaced caused themselves
to halt the reconstruction. Because of the
opposition they faced, the people reasoned that
maybe God did not want His Temple rebuilt.
They thought that maybe the time was not right.
For fifteen years after their return the Temple
remained devastated. The people made excuses,
and even convinced themselves they were
right. While they stopped the work, while
they stopped the progress of the rebuilding the
Temple, they never stopped to evaluate that
they might be wrong.
“God asked His people, “How can you live
in luxury when my house lies in ruins?”
The Temple was the focal point of Judah’s
relationship with God, but it was still lying in
ruins. Instead the people put their energies into
rebuilding and beautifying their own homes.”
-Life Application Bible Notes. We find the
Lord of host telling them to “Consider your
ways”.
There are three areas of concern as we consider
our ways: (1) The State of Apathy, (2) The State
of Selfishness, (3) The state of worldliness.
These are three dangerous states to be found in
as the Church of God.
1. Apathy.
Haggai 1:2  “This is what the
Lord Almighty says: “These people say, ‘The
time has not yet come to rebuild the Lord’s
house.’”
Apathy is the lack of emotion, showing no
interest, enthusiasm or concern. Spiritual apathy,

coldness, or indifference can affect even the
most sincere Christian at one time or another.
Human emotions being as fickle as they are,
feelings of apathy or disinterest can sometimes
replace the fervour we once felt for the things of
God. Overcoming such apathy is necessary for
continuing our walk with God.
• Apathy goes with lack of fear of God. God is
presented as weak and powerless.
• Apathy is related to relativism; the doctrine
that knowledge, truth, and morality exist
in relation to culture, society, or historical
context, and are not absolute.
One cause of spiritual apathy is sin in the
believer’s life. When David sinned, he felt
separated from God (Psalm 51:11). As he
confessed his sin to God, David prayed for
God to “renew a steadfast spirit” within him
(verse 10), and he had this request: “Restore
to me the joy of your salvation and grant
me a willing spirit, to sustain me” (verse
12). A believer who feels spiritually apathetic
should confess any known sin and ask for God’s
cleansing and renewal.
Another cause of spiritual apathy is allowing
dead orthodoxy to replace a true love for the
Lord. A Christian is to be marked by his love
for and obedience to Jesus (John 14:21), but
it is possible to obey without love. It is possible
to cling to the truth and serve God yet do so
in a loveless, lifeless fashion. Such mechanical
service is not pleasing to God. This was the
Lord’s condemnation of the Ephesian church
in Revelation 2:4: “You have forsaken the
love you had at first.”

If you are struggling with spiritual
apathy, remember the passion and
closeness you have had with God in the
past; repent of any sin and partner with
Christ to renew your heart and mind.
Allow the Holy Spirit to work in and
through you so you will have the fruit of
the Spirit in your life.
Satan loves apathy. We must stay alert to the
temptations of the old nature, the world, and
the evil one.
Three symptoms of Spiritual Apathy are: God’s
work is neglected, God’s people are contented,
and God’s people make excuses for not doing
what God wants them to do.
2. Selfishness/Self-Centeredness.
At the heart of selfishness is pride. Through the
prophet Haggai, God, tears away this thin flimsy
veneer of an excuse with which they had tried
to cover over their spiritual apathy and exposes
the ugly reality of the self-centred disposition
that lay beneath that veneer. Verse 4 “Is it a
time for you yourselves to be living in your
panelled houses while this house remains a
ruin?” and again in verse 9 “my house remains
a ruin while each of you is busy with his own
house.”

the presence of God among His people
– Psalm 132:13 “the Lord has chosen Zion,
he has desired it for His dwelling. This is my
resting place for ever and ever; here I will sit
enthroned for I have desired it…” It was also
inseparably connected with the Covenant that
God had made with his people.
Self-centredness breeds pride. Bud Robertson
once said; “Pride is the only thing that
makes everyone else sick but the one
who has it.” How true that is.
Self-centredness is one of the chief causes of
spiritual apathy within the Church today. It
is one of the main reasons why God’s work is
being neglected. Many Christians have got their
priorities in life all wrong. Instead of putting
God and the things of God first in their lives,
they put themselves and their own desires and
own needs first.
Is your life God-centred or is it self –centred?
Are you so busy running after other things that
you are relegating the things of God and the
work of God to a place of secondary importance
in your life; a bit part of your life rather than the
primary concern and chief purpose of your life?
3. Worldliness.
Where there’s self-centredness, worldliness
thrives. World-mindedness is the Siamese twin
of Self-centredness. They wanted the most
elegant, the most stylish, the most luxurious,
and the best they could get. No expense was
spared. The cedar clad roofs and the floor to
ceiling panelling were damning evidence of
their materialistic, worldly-minded outlook on
life. What a contrast between their houses and
the house of God. It lay in ruins while they dwelt
in luxury.
Let me clarify, God was not pointing the
accusing finger at the people merely on account
of the fact that they had built lovely houses for
themselves and were living in very comfortable
surroundings. That in itself was not wrong or
sinful. What God condemned was the sinful
materialistic, worldly-minded, self-centred
attitude by which these people were driven to
desire such things for themselves while caring
little about the work of God. It was the fact that
their heart was set more upon material things
than spiritual things that God was condemning.
They had their priorities all wrong.
So self-centredness and Worldly-mindedness
were two of the causes that lay behind the
people’s spiritual apathy.
Practical Application: The Book of Haggai
draws attention to common problems most
people face even today. Haggai asks us:
1) To examine our priorities to see if we are
more interested in our own pleasures than
doing the work of God;
2) To reject a defeatist attitude when we run
into opposition or discouraging circumstances;
3) To confess our failures and seek to live pure
lives before God;
4) To act courageously for God because we
have the assurance that He is with us always and
is in full control of our circumstances; and
5) To rest secure in God’s hands knowing that
He will abundantly bless us as we faithfully
serve Him

Consider Your
Steadfastness

I n the Abraham Isaac mountain experience
in Genesis, a commitment was made to
steadfastly strive to serve the Lord, prevail and
walk in the rich blessings of the Almighty. And
the promise of the Lord to bestow blessings on
you Gen 22:18 is sure, and Amen.
Paul to the Colossians 3:17, 23 and 1
Corinthians 10:13 of the “whatsoever you do”
gives a universal direction how in every capacity,
both personal and relative, in every motion, a
Christian may do all to find acceptance with
God. Desire in all you do to work hard and
be good stewards of the talents the Lord has
bestowed on you. The “whatsoever you do”,
from the very basics of life, eating and drinking,
let them be motivated by the desire to glorify
God. In serving God, your ambition is to benefit
creation in caring and working, as encouraged
by Genesis 2:15. However, Haggai is concerned.
“Is it a time for you yourselves to be living
in your panelled houses, while this house
remains a ruin?” Haggai 1:4
Constructing luxurious houses reflects secure,
settled and comfortable people, with the
luxury of time and resources to enjoy life in
abundance. Figuratively, this is the spiritual
state of the people – physically and mentally,
secularly in their everyday lives, they were
doing well. However, their spiritual health was
in ruins! Notwithstanding, they were driven
with a selfish focus. They deviated from the
primary focus of service for the glory of God.
Blessing of abundance is tempting; a significant
portion is directed to self-welfare, while the
house of the Lord is neglected. Pathetic! When
the benefits of the Lord abound, the memories
and commitments to Him start to diminish.
In the Lord’s goodness, he gently reminds us,
“Consider your ways.” Haggai 1:5
Compare your status and that of the service
for which you had gone to the mountain. As in
Isaiah 1:18, reason with the Lord as to whether
you are on course in the spiritual walk. You
may be experiencing challenges in your life,
you are missing rain, you have a deficiency
in your family, you brought home much, but
there appear to be holes in the pockets. It is
never enough; you can show nothing for your
hard work and abundance of investments. It is
frustrating, disappointing and often stressful.
You are called upon to “Consider your ways.”
Busy making a living, running seemingly endless
errands, bureaucracy, seeking achievement at

work, organising and running a household,
taking care of health and doctoring it when it
goes wrong. And often, the older you get, the
more hectic and thus the more distorted life
becomes.
The people of God had lost their focus, which
affected their faithfulness and fruitfulness.
“Look at the result: You plant much but
harvest little. You have scarcely enough
to eat or drink and not enough clothes to
keep you warm. Your income disappears,
as though you were putting it into pockets
filled with holes!” Haggai 1:6
Some reach where life is not worth living,
thus the rampant suicides and homicides and
wonder what is happening, as the social media
calls on spiritual providers to double emotional
counselling. The Bible is clear that striving for
power and strength leaves life without meaning.

To resolve this situation:
Consider your ways, consider your
steadfastness
Dictionaries describe steadfastness as a firm
adherence to whatever one owes allegiance
to; steadfast implies a steady and unwavering
course in love, commitment, or conviction.
Steadfastness means being rooted and grounded
in your faith in all seasons or circumstances.
The measure of your steadfastness is proven
over time. Consider the consistency of the way
you follow the Almighty God in the matter of
your faith, devotion, motivation and kingdom
investment.
1. Do not make excuses
Often, you come first in what you need and give
to God the leftovers. Your giving should not be
a timing issue but a treasure issue and should
not be based only on when you can “afford”
based on biblical stewardship. “But how do I
know when I have too much?” As the Lord
provides, lay up your treasures in a secure place
Mathew 6:21 and let your heart know it was the
providence of the Lord, and handle it according
to 1Timothy 6:18-21 paraphrased as:
“Be rich in good deeds, generous, willing
to share. It is the only safe investment
for eternity (for the coming age), so that
they may take hold of the life that is truly
life. Guard what is entrusted to your care.
Turn away from godless talk, falsely called
knowledge, and in so doing have departed
from the faith.”
2. Get your priorities in order
The little things in your daily life matter. All big
things in life begin small, and even the greatest
sin has a small beginning. So likewise, character
and habits result from the good little actions,
just as the tiny strokes of the hammer made the
ark that saved Noah.
The Epistles are full of instructions about
the particulars of the Christian life, and the
apostles seem to take nothing for granted in
detailing the life a Christian has to live. They
dwell on the duties of husbands and wives,
masters and servants, parents and children,
rulers and subjects, older people and young.
See how they single out and urge industry in
business, kindness in a temper, forgivingness in
disposition, honesty, truthfulness, temperance,
meekness, gentleness, humility, charity,
patience, courtesy.  Get your priorities to receive
an eternal inheritance.
3. Remember your dependence
upon God
In this world of technology, amenities and
conveniences make you a dependant, whether
you notice it or not; electricity in your homes
run appliances, finances rule your life, and
reliance on Google to give you answers impairs
your knowledge. The fact is you depend on
many things and many people for survival. But,
unfortunately, those things or those people
often fail you. However, who you trust could
be the difference between constant stress and
frustration, peace and harmony? The only
person you can depend on 100% is God. No
wonder David cries out.
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains, where
does my help come from? My help comes
from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and
earth.” Psalm 121:1-2
Dependence upon the Master of All, even
where everything seems to go wrong as with
Jacob in Gen 42:36, you will be able to run to
your Abba Father and rest all of your cares upon
Him, assured that He is going to take care of you.
“Be careful for nothing; but in every
thing by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made
known unto God.” Philippians 4:6
4. Obey the Word of God
By their obedience, they “showed reverence
for the Lord.” (Haggai 1:12). They did
not offer half-hearted service; instead, they
wholeheartedly and sincerely followed the
Lord’s commands. Reverence and obedience
go hand in hand. The wise man wrote, “Now
all has been heard; here is the conclusion
of the matter: Fear God and keep his
commandments, for this is the whole duty
of man.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). We must
also fear God and obey Him today, just as
Peter told the household of Cornelius: “I now
realise how true it is that God does not show
favouritism but accepts from every nation
the one who fears him and does what is
right. (Acts 10:34-35).
In conclusion, you conquer the world by
allowing Christ’s character to dwell within you
with steadfastness. By the constant renewal of
your mind, imitate Jesus (Romans 12:2). Amen

Through the prophet, God was reminding
the Israelites to have their priorities right. God
did not condemn them for enjoying a level of
comfort. Rather, He was condemning them for
their misplaced priorities. It was not proper that
they put their houses before the Lord’s house,
especially since God arranged for them to
return to the land for the purpose of rebuilding
His house. As mentioned in the words of Jesus
Christ, we must be careful that we always “seek
first His kingdom and His righteousness” in
our lives (Matthew 6:33).
Having our priorities right requires work. God
commanded them, “Go up to the mountains,
bring wood and rebuild the temple that
I may be pleased with it and be glorified”
(Haggai 1:8). It was not enough for them to
simply remember God or to talk about how they
gave preference to Him. They needed to do the
work God called them to do. In the same way,
our preference for God and for spiritual things
must be demonstrated in our actions. Jesus said,
“Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do
not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46). We cannot
legitimately claim to be putting the Lord first in
our lives if we are not obeying Him.
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus instructs
us to “seek first the Kingdom of God.” This

particularly about the practicalities of life
including shelter. Jesus was clearly showing the
difference between living in the old covenant
and living in the new covenant that He was
bringing through His work on the cross.
Life before the redemption of Christ for most
included striving, sweating, working and just
trying to survive by their own ingenuity and
drive. Sin had separated humanity from the
abundant provision of God and cursed them
with painful toil and working by the sweat of
their brow. It also required them to live under
the Law of Moses, something no one was able
to do perfectly. This was the reality that people
had had to endure until Jesus came with a new
reality, the Kingdom of God.
In this reality, Jesus reconciled humanity to the
Father through His shed blood on the cross
and restored us to the fullness of what it means
to be sons and daughters of the King. A reality
where, just like in the story of the Prodigal Son,
the Father came running toward the son in love,
restoring him to his place as a son and heir.
We were born dead in sin, separated from
God and eternally condemned. However,
by faith in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven of
our transgressions and cleansed from all
unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 says that, “If we
confess our sins, he is faithful and just and
will forgive us our sins and purify us from
all unrighteousness.”
 SCRIPTURE

This is a three-part series that focuses on
scripture. Part one looks at the authority of
scripture; part two looks at the place of scripture;
and part three looks at intentional Bible Study.
The Authority of Scripture
Scripture means the books of the Bible, or a
passage from the Bible. Authority means power
or right to give orders and it happens; power
to order something to be or to happen, and it
does, just like it has been ordered. Only God has
power to order, and it happens exactly as He has
ordered. Therefore, Scripture, being the word of
God, has all God’s power.
We find the first evidence of the authority of
scripture in the Bible itself, first, from the very
beginning in the book of Genesis 1. After creating

the heavens and the earth in Genesis 1:1, the
Bible now focuses on the earth from verse 3. We
see in the rest of Genesis 1 that God spoke, and
there was light; there was the expanse of water
and sky; there were the stars of the heavens, the
sun and moon; there was vegetation of all kings;
there were living creatures in the seas and birds
in the air; there were living creatures all over the
land; and finally, God made man in His image. It
is from God’s the spoken word – scripture - that
all that we see, feel, and hear came to be, clearly
demonstrating the authority of scripture over
the whole universe and all creation.
The second evidence is that the Bible itself says
it is the word of God.
• 2 Timothy 3:16 says - All Scripture is
God breathed.
• 2 Peter 1:21 says - For prophesy never
had its origin in the will of man, but men
spoke from God as they were carried
along in the Holy Spirit.
The Bible was written by men who were inspired
and guided by God, even though they may not
have fully appreciated what they were writing.
Jesus Christ Himself recognized the authority
of the Old Testament, and often quoted from it
throughout His life. Right from the beginning of
His ministry, when confronted by Satan, Jesus
always started by saying – It is written (Luke
4:4, 8), and It says (Luke 4:12). In John 16:13,
Jesus says – When he, the Spirit of Truth,
comes, he will guide you in all truth. The
Holy Spirit, who convicts the world of sin, also
confirms that the Bible is God’s Word.
The authority of scripture is also evident in the
ability of the Bible to transform lives. Hebrews
4:12 says - For the word of God is alive and
active.  Sharper than any double-edged
sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul
and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the
thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
We read and study the Bible not merely
for information, but largely because of its
ability to completely change and transform

our lives. There is ample evidence of
how the Bible, the word of God, and the
Holy Spirit, has transformed lives, not
only as recorded in the Bible, but also as
witnessed by many people, right across
the social divide. No other book can claim
such achievements, not even the acclaimed
motivational literature.
The Bible is also very consistent, with no
contradiction. Consider the following

dealing with each one authoritatively and
with unity of theme and purpose.
• The Bible was written over a period of about
1,500 years
• The Bible was written by more than 40 men
• The authors of the Bible were from very
different walks of life, occupations, and
professions. We have Paul who originally
persecuted Christians; David, a murderer;
Matthew a tax collector; Luke the Doctor;
the list is long. In addition, the authors
wrote under very different circumstances.
These authors wrote under very different
circumstances - David wrote at a time
of war; Jeremiah wrote at the time of the
downfall of Israel; Peter wrote when Israel
was ruled by the Roman Empire; and
Joshua wrote while at war to win Canaan.
The author’s purposes for writing were also
very different and diverse.
• The Bible was written in many different
places, in three different continents (Asia,
Africa, and Europe) - Moses wrote in the
desert of Sinai, Paul wrote while in prison
in Rome, Daniel wrote while in exile in
Babylon, and Ezra wrote in Jerusalem.
Despite all this, the Bible does not contradict
itself and retains unity of theme and purpose,
which is the redemption of sinful man and
God’s creation.
There is also evidence outside of the Bible that
clearly demonstrate its authority.
First, the Bible has proved to be indestructible.
No book has been attacked more than the Bible,
both by writers and by physical force. Scientists,
archeologists, philosophers, and scholars, but all
these have failed.
• 1 Pet. 1:24 – 25 we read: All people are
like grass, and all their glory is like the
flowers of the field; the grass withers and
the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord
endures forever.
• Isaiah 40:8 - The grass withers and the
flowers fall, but the word of our God
endures forever.
It is said that a minimal percentage of books
survive more than twenty years, a smaller
percentage lasts one hundred years; and even
an insignificant percentage survive beyond
one thousand years. Yet, despite the wreck and

ruin of ancient literature, the Holy Scripture
has stood, demonstrating that the Bible, like its
Author, it is indestructible.
Archaeology has also demonstrated the
authority of scripture. Scholars have
documented that no archaeological discovery
has ever controverted a biblical reference.
Instead, archaeology has confirmed the
substantial historicity of the Old Testament.
Many archaeological discoveries have been
made that confirm the accuracy and truth of the
Bible.
There is also evidence from prophesy that
confirm the authority of the Bible. The Bible
contains hundreds of prophecies which have
come to pass. It is amazing how accurate and
specific the prophets in the Bible have been. A
few examples will suffice.
• Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem,
prophesied in Micah 5:2, fulfilled in
Matthew 2:1-6; Luke 2:1-20
• Messiah was to be of a virgin, prophesied
in Isaiah 7:14, fulfilled in Matthew 1:18-25;
and Luke 1:26-38
• Messiah was to be betrayed by one of
His followers, prophesied in Psalm 41:9,
fulfilled in Matthew 26:14-16; 47-50; and
Luke 22:19-23
• Messiah was to be raised from the dead,
prophesied in Psalm 16:10, fulfilled in
Matthew 28:1-10; Acts 2:22-32
• Tyre was made up of two parts, a mainland
port city and an island city half a mile
offshore. In Ezekiel 26, which was written
in 587 B.C., he prophesies that the
mainland Tyre would be destroyed by
Nebuchadnezzar, many nations would fight
against her, the debris of the city would be
thrown into the ocean, the city would never
be found again, and fishermen would come
there to lay their nets.
In 573 B.C., Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the
mainland city of Tyre. In 333 B.C., Alexander
the Great laid siege on Tyre and completely
destroyed the city. To this day, Tyre lies
buried in ruins exactly as prophesied.
• In 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls were
discovered, which contained the book of
Isaiah and other prophetic books. When
dated, they were found to be written from
120 to 100 B.C., well before Jesus was born.

Scripture therefore has power because it is the
word of God. This calls us to respond to this
truth, and there are very many ways in which
we can do that; we cannot exhaust them in this
space; below is but a very short list.
1. Seek to know God’s word and apply it. We
must seek to know God’s word because it is
truth. We know God’s word by reading and
study. Having read it, we must then apply
the Biblical truths in our lives. The Bible
in must not end at knowledge but must
transform our lives.
2. Having known the word, we must use the
word of truth in prayer, praying back God’s
truth in our various situations, because the
word speaks into every situation, pleasant
and not pleasant.
3. We must also spread the word to the
world, as Jesus commanded in Matthew
28:18–20
Promises

William Penn, founder of the commonwealth
of Pennsylvania, was well liked by the Indians.
Once they told him he could have as much of
their land as he could encompass on foot in a
single day. So, early the next morning he started
out and walked until late that night. When he
finally went to claim his land, the Indians were
greatly surprised, for they really didn’t think he
would take them seriously. But they kept their
promise and gave him a large area, which today
is part of the city of Philadelphia. William Penn
simply believed what they said.

Have you ever heard the saying, “promises
are made to be broken”. That seems to be the
prevailing train of thought today. It used to be
that a person’s word or promise was their bond.
The power of a person’s word is not what it used
to be. Today we have to have legalized contracts
for absolutely everything; have you tried to
buy a house lately. The amount of paperwork
is staggering. Even with all the contracts and
promises that people have, they still disregard
them when they don’t like the terms that they
originally agreed to. We are always hearing
about sports personalities that make an obscene
amount of money to start with, decide that they
want to re-negotiate their contracts. It doesn’t
matter that they signed the existing contract. In
essence they had made a promise but now they
want to break that promise.
The book of Hebrews is for me, and I believe
for the Hebrew people that were the original
recipients, a letter of reassurance and hope. The
Hebrew Christians had been going through
much persecution for their faith and they
needed the reassurance that what they were
doing, what they believed in was true and that

I heard about a picture of an old burned-out
mountain shack. All that remained was the
chimney. The charred debris of what had been

looking man dressed only in his under-clothes
with a small boy clutching a pair of patched
overalls. It was evident that the child was crying.
Beneath the picture were the words which the
artist felt the old man was speaking to the boy.
They were simple words, yet they presented a
profound theology and philosophy of life. Those
words were, “Hush child, God’s not dead!”
That vivid picture of that burned-out mountain
shack, that old man, the weeping child, and
those words, ‘God’s not dead’ is a reminder of
not the despair of life, but of hope. We all need
reminders that there is hope in this world. In the

midst of all of life’s troubles and failures, we need
mental pictures to remind us that all is not lost as
long as God is alive and in control of His world.”
Lastly, we see a promise of Access. Look at
verse19 and 20. Before Jesus, only the high
priest had access to God. Access to God was
gained through entering what was known as
the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle or Temple.
Even then they would enter into the presence of
God only on the Day of Atonement. This was
the day that the High Priest would make the
sacrifice for the forgiveness of the sins of the
Jewish nation. The section of the temple was
separated from all the other areas by a curtain.
The sacrifice of Jesus for our sins did away with
this separation between the people and God.
Jesus’ sacrifice gave us access to God directly.
No longer do we need a priest to make sacrifices
for us. Jesus did that. No longer did man need
a lamb to be sacrificed for their sins. Jesus was
the lamb. He is called the Lamb of God who
takes away the sins of the world. Now when we
accept this sacrifice that was Jesus on a cross for
our sins, we have access to God. Jesus was our
penance and we have access to God through the
blood of Jesus Christ.
The writer of Hebrews is telling the Jewish
people that now, God promises access to
Himself through the blood of Jesus Christ. He is
telling us the same thing. We are promised this
access to God anytime we want it. All we have
to do is ask.

Here at the Cathedral, Pam was editor of
News & Views for a long time. It gave her a
challenge and kept her in touch with many
aspects of church life and people. She was
an active member of Lavington East Africa
Women’s League. We have missed seeing her
at Friday Market when it has been open since
the COVID pandemic. Pam stayed home
protecting dear Tim and herself. Their life has
been so lonely these past months.
As we approach Christmas and celebrate our
Lord’s first coming among us, we will all be
with or contacting family, wherever they may
be. So let us remember especially Pam’s family
who meant so much to her. Jeremy and Jennifer
and the three grandchildren, dear Timothy, and
Mary-Anne so far away in Canada. Her sister
Barbara in the UK. And all the Awori relatives
who will miss Pam and will be grieving at this
time, but thankful for their memories and that

she rested peacefully at home, knowing her
Saviour and His promises to her.
Pam, we will miss your quiet ways, your
hospitality and above all your prayers for each of
us and our families. Rest in peace.
2. From Mrs Janet Njoroge
As a member of All Saints’ Cathedral from the
1980s, I knew Pam Awori by name as the editor
of News & Views, the magazine which I eagerly
looked forward to reading every month. It was
not until around the mid-1990s when I came
to know Pam well after I joined Bible Study
Fellowship (BSF) leadership and found her
there.
As we served together over the next several
years, we got to know each other and discovered
our shared interest in written communication,
and she invited me to join her in the editorial
team of News & Views, the other members
being William Esikhaty and the Cathedral
Administrator. This team would meet at least
twice a month (usually in the Chapter House),
once to plan the forthcoming issue and then
to proofread before sending the magazine for
printing. Punctuality was strictly observed –
that was Pam’s way.
For the next 15 years or so, Pam led the team
as the one to receive and select articles for
publication. In selecting the articles, Pam was
guided by the need to: inform members of the
activities in the Cathedral; represent all sectors
and ministries; reflect the Anglican liturgical
calendar; and balance heavy reading and lighter
pieces such as jokes and puzzles, many of which
she created herself. She typed out the articles
and liaised with designers and printers to ensure
that the magazine was out each month, ready
to be handed out to the congregation on the
appointed Sunday. She then personally handed
out copies to the 7.00 am congregation at the
end of the service. In all this, Pam was a great
inspiration to the team.
Pam gave sacrificially of her time, skills and
financial resources. She printed copies of
articles which she shared with the team for
editing and proofreading. As those familiar with
the publication process will know, this may be
repeated several times, adding up to substantial
costs each month.
Pam also took time to upgrade her skills. I
remember her acquiring the Microsoft
Publisher software and learning how to use it so
that she could personally lay out the magazine
pages. This was well past her 70th birthday. Her
efforts led to great improvement in the look of
the magazine.
Pam served with excellence and held herself
and the team to the highest standards of both
editorial and production quality. Whether it was

in the selection of articles and photos, cover and
page design, proofreading or the printing, she
approached each process with intentionality,
guided by the knowledge that this work was a
service to God and He deserves the best.
By the time I got involved with News & Views,
Pam had been working on it for many years.
For example, we had a regular column that was
called “News & Views 20 years ago” where
she would select an article to remind readers
what had happened 20 years before. So she had
both institutional memory as well a valuable
archive of past issues of the magazine.
I was also struck by Pam’s
commitment which was
particularly evident when
she faced health and other
challenges and still did
whatever she could to ensure
that the magazine was out on
time.
It was a joy and privilege
to work with Pam and be
inspired by her as we served
together.
In conclusion, Pam knew and loved the Lord
Jesus as her Saviour and served diligently in
the Lord’s vineyard. I believe that she has
been received by her Lord with the words in
Matthew 25: 21 – Well done, good and
faithful servant … Come and share your
Master’s happiness.
To God be the glory for Pam’s life of
service. Amen

minimising the risk of the COVID-19 virus.

We are happy to report that this helped check
on overall welfare of members as some faced
fairly challenging times.
The church leadership stepped in pretty fast
assisting members who lacked foodstuff at the
time.
We appreciate members who volunteered
resources, time, we made some in person
visit and ensured in the small way fellowship
amongst us continued despite the raging
pandemic.
It became apparent that technology is and will
be a terrific tool for ministry throughout the
world and it would help reach a greater number
of people once used effectively.
The uncertainties brought by the COVID-19
pandemic put the world in a perpetual spin
which largely put sports activities in jeopardy.
We learnt to trust in God with everything that
we have as the reality of the pandemic brought
us to the point of grace and humility for all we
took for granted.

We thank God through the church leaderships’
support, we acquired equipment which will
go a long way in diversifying sport giving
opportunity for more members to participate in
ministry activities.
As we had mentioned in previous News &
Views editions, we have equipment for lawn
tennis,badminton,darts,table tennis to mention
a few.
These will be pivotal in increasing participation
in all sectors of our church and beyond.We look
forward to getting new converts throughout the
coming year.
The second and third quarters saw us engage
the teens more to continue with youth teens
mentoring program as we have always desired
to have them involved to guarantee seamless
transition to the youth church.
Further, we had representatives in August
participate in CTC fundraiser activities, where a
team of 4members hiked Ngong Hills making a
cumulated total of over 30,000 steps.

We learnt importance
of teamwork, resilience
and passion coupled with
unrelenting focus to a goal.
Members to date continue to contribute
resources to aid in reaching a billion children
for Christ through the CTC (Children and
Teens Centre Project).
We appreciate all members who have
contributed both materially, spiritually to
make this vision a reality. We further believe,
evangelism and outreach pillar will be critical in
reaching out to schools where we have existing
partnerships to foster fellowship this year.
Members should now look out for more ways to
leave lasting impact to the young ones through
integrated fellowships with the young.
We also believe part of the challenges students
face in the country can be stemmed through
kids involvement in sporting activities thus
using their giftings for God.

Below are some of the things to look out for in
2022;
• Intentional fellowships; Being in
Ministry isn’t boring at all. We saw the
impact in using multiplier effect-this
entailed splitting the groups in smaller
numbers ensuring 80% of our members
were reached out to at all times, understand
their needs and ways to reach out where
challenges abound.
Our special team for pastoral care will
work relentlessly in 2022 to ensure the
fellowships continue in and out of the
Cathedral.
• Constant innovation; The upcoming
AFCON, FIFA WORLD CUP offer
tremendous opportunities for teams and
entire church fellowship. We will work
at the practicalities of beaming these
matches for members to view this right
within church premises.
As it happened in 2018 world cup final, we
trust God the timings will be favourable for
members to watch global events including
basketball, tennis grandslams,formula one,
golf and much more.
• Trainings; Looking at the opportunities
to reach schools this year,it will be
imperative that members who would wish
to participate actively get equipped for
these assignments. We have put in place
resources for trainings in CET,School
of prayer and other relevant material for
the team. Further in sports, we will look
at the partnerships with the federations

capacity for maximum impact.

• Activities schedule; The team is
working on the final activities schedule to
ensure all members in the church know
what to expect at different months of the
year.Further, we would love to see the
entire church participate in well organised
activities we plan.
• Publicity; This is key for all church
members to stay abreast of all activities
going on in the ministry. In addition to
News and Views, we will use social
media, radio/tv(where possible) to always
inform members on the things happening
in sports. We will coordinate activities

happened, posters of things upcoming to
mention a few.
• Diversity; As promised over the
years,we look forward to 2022 with hope
and enthusiasm, we will certainly have
events for most of the sports lovers.This in
our view will rid bias of the conventional
games most people know,we shall then
introduce swimming,skating,basketball as
the infrastructure is being worked on.
We further believe, more people will get to
meet Christ through the activities we shall
participate in.
