1. Princess Diana’s family tree: everything to know about the

Spencers;

John Spencer, the man who would become the 8th Earl Spencer and the father of
Princess Diana, was born 10 years after the start of the WWI. The Spencer clan had a
500-year legacy behind them. John attended Eton College—the same school that
Prince William and Prince Harry went to. He wasn’t official royalty, but he was royal
adjacent, having served as an equerry to King George VI and to Queen Elizabeth II.
Frances Shand Kydd was born at Park House.  Her mother served as a confidante and
lady-in-waiting to the Queen Mother.
They divorced in 1969 after she fell in love with Peter Shand Kydd, heir to a
wallpaper fortune. Her husband John was awarded full custody of all four kids, Diana
included. Her father died from a heart attack and her mother passed away in 2004.

2. CHILDHOOD AND TEENAGE YEARS

Diana Frances Spencer was born on July 1, 1961 to John Spencer, the
8th Earl Spencer and his first wife, Frances. She was the fourth of five
children, but her brother, John, died in infancy.
When she was 7 years old, Diana's parents
divorced. Her brother, Charles, told PEOPLE that
the split, which saw her mother leaving the family
home, was hard on her. "[It] was tough on Diana,"
he said. "She used to sit on the doorstep at Park
House and wait for her to come back." Both of her
parents remarried.

Lady Diana was sent to boarding school, eventually attending West Heath Public
School in Kent. Here she excelled at sport, particularly swimming.

After graduating from school, she moved to London, where she worked
as a nanny and a nursery school teacher.
3. MARRIAGE AND FAMILY

She first met Prince Charles when she was 16. He was dating her sister,
Sarah. They reunited and the two began dating. After spending time with
the royal family at Balmoral, the Queen's Scottish residence, and on the
royal yacht Britannia, Queen Elizabeth and other members of the royal
family expressed their approval of Diana. As Diana's relationship with
Prince Charles became more serious, the public began to speculate that the
two were an item, and the press started camping outside of her London
apartment. Before confirming their relationship, Prince Charles invited Diana
to a number of events with the royal family. Her, she attends the Ludlow
Horse Races with Charles' ex-girlfriend, Camilla Parker-Bowles. In February
1981, Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced their engagement on the
lawn of Buckingham Palace.

The Princess wore a royal blue suit dress, purchased off the rack at Harrods
department store, to match her diamond and sapphire engagement ring.

After the proposal, Charles left the country, but he suggested that Lady
Diana and Camila should be friends and he also mentioned that if Diana
feels lonely, she can call Camila anytime. Diana decided to call Camila
and they went to a restaurant. In that day Diana found out that Charles
and Camila had nicknames: FRED and GLADYS. “I walked into this man's
office one day and I said, 'Ooh, what's in that parcel?' And he said 'Oh, you
shouldn't look at that,’” Diana told her biographer Andrew Morton in 1997
(via The Sun). “So I opened it and there was the bracelet. I was devastated, and I
said 'Well, he's going to give it to her tonight,’” she continued. “So rage, rage,
rage. You know, 'Why can't you be honest with me?' But no, absolutely cut me
dead. It was as if he’d made his decision, and if it wasn't going to work, it wasn't
going to work.” Camila also attended to their wedding, despite the fact that she
was married to. (Charles and Camila met when he was at a competition. Queen
Elisabeta's mother and her uncle made this meeting possible.)
Then 20 years old, Diana had already
shown signs of her condition for months. The
UK's National Health Service describes it as
an eating disorder and mental health condition
which involves the individual eating "a lot of
food in a very short amount of time (binge
eating) and then make themselves sick" in
order to prevent weight gain.
According to Andrew Morton's 1992
biography, based on confession tapes
recorded by the princess, Diana's condition
began before her wedding to Charles.
"The bulimia started the week after we got engaged and would take nearly a
decade to overcome," she said on the tapes, according to Vogue. "My
husband put his hand on my waistline and said: 'Oh, a bit chubby here, aren't
we?' and that triggered off something in me."
Her wedding ring is also not the only item to have been sized down due to her
struggle with bulimia.

4. PUBLIC ROLE

After her marriage, The Princess of Wales quickly became involved in the official
duties of the Royal Family.

Her first tour with The Prince of Wales was a three-day visit to Wales . In 1983 she
accompanied the Prince on a tour of Australia and New Zealand, and hey took the infant
Prince William with them.

Other official overseas visits undertaken with the Prince included Australia, Brazil,
India, Canada, Nigeria, Cameroon, Indonesia, Spain, Italy, France, Portugal and Japan .
Their last joint overseas visit was to South Korea.

Although the Princess was renowned for her style and was closely associated with the
fashion world, patronising and raising the profile of younger British designers, she was
best known for her charitable work.
During her marriage, the Princess was president or patron of over 100 charities. The
Princess did much to publicise work on behalf of homeless and also disabled people,
children and people with HIV/Aids.
5. SEPARATION AND DIVORCE

Princess Diana and King Charles split due to Charles’ affair with his current
wife Camilla Parker Bowles. Though Diana later admitted to affairs while she was
married to Charles, this particular affair with Camilla seemed to rock the world.
Diana first confronted Camilla about her knowledge of the affair. In a
conversation between the two of them that was recorded in Andrew Morton’s
book, Diana: In Her Own Words. Diana told Camilla, “I know what’s going on
between you and Charles and I just want you to know that.” Camilla then
retaliated, “You’ve got everything you ever wanted. You’ve got all the men in the
world fall in love with you and you’ve got two beautiful children, what more do
you want?”Diana responded, “I want my husband.” The couple was also
embroiled in two separate scandals where the British media released their private
calls. The first set of calls evolved into a scandal and news story by The Sun called
Squidgygate where Diana and her friend James Gilbey called each other
affectionate names on their phone calls. A later, and much more known, scandal
that affected their marriage was Camilagate where Charles is heard talking very
intimately to Camila, much to the public’s shock. Charles later admitted to
cheating on Diana in an interview with ITN. On asked if he was faithful to his
wife, he answered, “Yes,” Then after a slight pause he added, “Until it became
irretrievably broken down, us both having tried.” Buckingham Palace released a
statement that the Queen had written to Charles and Diana urging them to
divorce. Princess Diana announced that she would be agreeing to divorce Prince
Charles, “The Princess of Wales has agreed to Prince Charles’s request for a
divorce. The Princess will continue to be involved in all decisions relating to the
children and will remain at Kensington Palace with offices in St. James’s Palace.
The Princess of Wales will retain the title and be known as Diana, Princess of
Wales.”
 The revenge dress

In June 1994, Diana stepped out for a gala at the Serpentine Gallery in
London wearing a fitted, black, off-the-shoulder dress with an asymmetrical
hemline and chiffon train that flowed in the wind.

The revealing ensemble was unusual for a member of the typically buttoned-
up royal family — but that's not the only reason it grabbed headlines: Princess
Diana wore the head-turning number the same night that Prince
Charles confessed on national television that he had been unfaithful to her.

In order to fully understand the dress's significance, you have to know its
history. According to Diana: A Life in Dresses by Claudia Joseph (ACC
Art Books), the gown worn by Princess Diana to the Serpentine Gallery
in 1994 was actually commissioned in September 1991—long before the
rift with her then husband Prince Charles had reached its crescendo.
During a shopping trip in Stambolian's boutique in Beauchamp place,
Diana picked up a few pieces and then told the designer, "I want a special
dress for a special occasion. It doesn't matter if it is short or long. It has
to be something special." After deliberating on the fashion risks she was
willing to take, they also decided it would be black. And with the design
set, two dressmakers crafted a hand-stitched gown with a flirty mini
train, which would then sit in Princess Diana's wardrobe unworn for
three years.

Prior to her appearance at the Serpentine Gallery in 1994, it leaked that

the Princess of Wales was going to wear Valentino. So instead, she wore
the-soon-to-be-notorious revenge dress made by Stambolian. The
appearance caused a stir; Princess Diana, who dressed with intention
and understood the power of telling a story through a visual, had
succeeded in her task.
Diana used the dress to reclaim her space in the narrative—asserting
herself and her independence. "Diana was known for wearing pieces that
would wow," explains Elizabeth Holmes, royal fashion commentator
and Town & Country contributor. "She knew how a show-stopping piece
could feel to wear—and watch. The revenge dress was both thrilling for
royal fans and all but guaranteed her place in the newspaper, where
space was finite. Embracing fashion-forward styles helped her get that
spot on the front page time and time again." In other words, the revenge
dress was true to her signature style.

But the LBD dress known 'round the world was also a departure for the
royal. For example, it hit above the knee. "Up until that stage of her life,
we hadn't seen Diana choose shorter evening looks (though it was
common for formal daywear, suits, and the like)," says Holmes. "Also,
black is a color that the royal family typically reserves for mourning.
Diana had worn black before but it was still quite a modern choice, the
ultimate 'little black dress' before that concept became widespread."

6. DEATH

The last day of Princess Diana’s life began on the top deck of her lover’s yacht, with
croissants and fresh jams.
Diana and her beau, Dodi Al Fayed, sipped their coffee marveling at the breathtaking
Emerald Coast in Sardinia. Diana took hers with milk. Fayed took his black. There
were kiwis, too.

In late August 1997, Princess Diana was newly divorced and ready to begin a

brand-new chapter of her life.

Then 36 years old, the royal mom to Prince William and Prince Harry, then,
was in a blossoming relationship with Dodi Al Fayed, the son of Harrods
department store owner Mohamed Al Fayed. The new couple, making the
most of summer, had been vacationing in France together.

On Aug. 31, 1997, Diana and Al Fayed were traveling in a car in Paris — with
a driver and bodyguard— pursued by paparazzi when their vehicle slammed
into a support column, flipped and came to a rest in front of oncoming traffic.
Al Fayed and the driver died instantly, while medical workers attempted to
keep Diana alive for hours before her death was announced at nearly 5:00
a.m. on Aug. 31. ( Diana’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, survived the crash
with serious injuries. Diana, who was still alive at the scene of the crash but was
in critical condition, was rushed to the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital where she died.
According to Oprah magazine, Diana suffered from a concussion, a broken arm, a
cut thigh and massive chest injuries. After a two-hour operation to save her, the
doctors failed to get Diana’s heart to beat properly and she never regained
consciousness. )( Diana and Fayed, who arrived in Paris after a 10-day getaway
on the French Riviera, got into Paul’s car a few minutes after midnight on August
31, 1997, before their car crashed. It’s believed that Diana and Fayed planned to
travel to Fayed’s private estate in Paris. According to Oprah magazine, the posted
speed limit for the road for 30 miles per hour, however, Paul approached the
entrance of the tunnel at around 70 miles per hour, which led him to lose control
of the car and collide with a pillar in the middle of the highway. According to a
report by the Telegraph at the time, a French investigation found that Paul, who
was the deputy head of security at the Hôtel Ritz, had been intoxicated by alcohol
and under the effects of prescription drugs, including anti-depressants and anti-
psychotic drugs, at the time of the crash. The investigation found that he was
solely responsible for the accident. Investigations also revealed that Rees-Jones
survived because he was wearing a seatbelt, while no one else in the car was
wearing one. )Years after Princess Diana died, the British Metropolitan
Police opened an inquiry into her death and requested to interview and
question Prince Charles. The police had been told about a note that
Princess Diana wrote in 1995 that read, "My husband is planning 'an
accident' in my car, brake failure and serious head injury." Diana
reportedly believed that Charles might be planning such an accident so
that he could marry Prince William and Prince Harry's nanny at the time.

Associating the revenge dress with mourning is an astute observation,
and one that was also top of mind for Amy Roberts and Sidonie Roberts,
the costume designer and associate costume designer & head buyer for
the The Crown. At a recent roundtable, the duo revealed that prior to
this season, they had only ever used black on the actors playing the
royals if they were going to funerals or in mourning. So the inclusion of
the revenge dress marks a departure from the norm on the show. "It
became this quite symbolic moment where she chooses to wear black and
it's representing a death of a marriage, the moving away from the Palace,
and then the rebirth of this independent woman," explains Sidonie.

7. THE FUNERAL

The funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales took place in Westminster

Abbey. It began at 11 am and lasted for about one hour. Before moving
in Procession to the Abbey for the service, the Princess’s coffin had lain
at the Chapel Royal, until the evening before the funeral. It was then
moved to the Princess’s apartment at Kensington Palace, where it
remained overnight. On the morning of the funeral her coffin was
brought from Kensington Palace to Wales. Following the service, the
Princess’s coffin was taken by road to the Spencer family home at
Althorp for private burial. The grave faces east, towards the rising sun.
