HOSPITAL PHARMACY INTERNSHIP/IMMERSION

OBJECTIVES:

1. To know and have a deeper understanding of the hospital and hospital pharmacy
organization, protocols, procedures and standards in the institution.
2. To demonstrate knowledge and skills in dispensing, compounding, storage,
manufacturing, and distribution in accordance to legal & ethical standards in pharmacy
practice.
3. To apply good dispensing practices and pharmaceutical knowledge in patient
counselling.
4. To collaborate and communicate effectively with the health care team, especially in
the preparation of the patient’s pharmaceutical care plan.
5. To be able to skillfully analyze and provide answers to drug-related inquiries, and
provide correct drug information efficiently.
6. To gain knowledge and experience of the clinical practice, including but not limited to
the antimicrobial stewardship program.
7. To be familiar and knowledgeable of the drugs available in the hospital pharmacy.

OUTCOMES:
After completing the course, the student must be able to:
1. Describe, differentiate and perform the distributive and clinical pharmacy functions of
the hospital pharmacist.
2. Effectively and efficiently perform the following basic hospital pharmacy operations
such as: drug dispensing, compounding and compounding, and drug calculations.
3. Apply knowledge and skills they have gained from formal courses to actual, dynamic
patient care situations such as, but not limited to, providing drug information, reviewing
the medication orders of patients for completeness and appropriateness, monitoring and
documentation of adverse drug reactions and professionally working with
multidisciplinary teams.
4. Easily read and understand prescriptions and/or medication orders.
