1. Introduction
1.1 Background:
What is social media?
A system for disseminating information over the Internet to a selected group of followers.
Social media platforms are used by people to publish their daily activities, comments and
photos as well as re-publish information posted by others.
Social media platforms allow users to have conversations, share information and create web
content. There are many forms of social media, including blogs, micro-blogs, wikis, social
networking sites, photo-sharing sites, instant messaging, video-sharing sites, podcasts,
widgets, virtual worlds, and more.
People use Twitter to get the latest updates and promotions from brands; communicate with
friends; and follow business leaders, politicians and celebrities. They also use it to stay
current on news and events. Twitter is used to share information quickly. Because tweets can
be delivered to followers in real time, they might seem like instant messages (IM) to the
novice user. But unlike IMs that disappear when the user closes the application, tweets are
also posted on the Twitter website. They are permanent, searchable and public. There is also
an option to protect tweets so only followers can read tweets. Users choose what they want to
see on Twitter by following other users and companies and searching topics. Generally, the
timeline reflects the users' preferences, but they may see retweets from people they follow
and promoted Tweets, which are paid advertisements. To help limit fake accounts, Twitter
created the verified account symbol, which indicates the account is legitimate and belongs to
the person or company. To get verified, Twitter confirms the identity of the individual or
company. This helps maintain trust with users. The account must be associated with a popular
brand or person and follow Twitter's criteria using an official website, ID or email address to
be verified.
Facebook is developed as one monolithic application. According to an interview in 2012 with Facebook
build engineer Chuck Rossi, Facebook compiles into a 1.5 GB binary blob which is then distributed to the
servers using a custom BitTorrent-based release system. Rossi stated that it takes about 15 minutes to build
and 15 minutes to release to the servers. The build and release process has zero downtime. Changes to
Facebook are rolled out daily. News Feed appears on every user's homepage and highlights
information including profile changes, upcoming events and friends' birthdays. This enabled
spammers and other users to manipulate these features by creating illegitimate events or
posting fake birthdays to attract attention to their profile or cause. Initially, the News Feed
caused dissatisfaction among Facebook users; some complained it was too cluttered and full
of undesired information, others were concerned that it made it too easy for others to track
individual activities (such as relationship status changes, events, and conversations with other
users). Zuckerberg apologized for the site's failure to include appropriate privacy features.
Users then gained control over what types of information are shared automatically with
friends. Users are now able to prevent user-set categories of friends from seeing updates
about certain types of activities, including profile changes, Wall posts and newly added
friends.
Many researches have carried out for finding out which platform is better between Twitter
and Facebook. So, we have focused more on creating awareness about fake news and spams
on Twitter and Facebook.
2. Methodology:
Primary data is any information that is not derived from secondary sources. The term
“primary” refers to the fact that it is the original source of information, and not derived from
another source. It is any information that has been collected by a human being. This can
include data from surveys, interviews and focus groups. Primary data is the original, raw data
from which other types of data are analysed and derived.
The study followed a descriptive survey design, and a productive sampling technique has
been adapted for data collection. The study undertaken in Mumbai-Maharashtra, located in
western part of India. A close-ended structure questionnaire was used to gather data on
Twitter vs Facebook. There were 10 questionnaires about Twitter vs Facebook. The
questionnaires were made up using Google forms. It was circulated by team members
through social media apps.
The primary data collected from the Google forms was in the form of pie charts, bar graphs,
percentages, tables, etc. Through these data we have concluded our research works.
To collect the primary data, a Google from was made using the web application, Google
Forms. Google Form is a form online form builder that allow you to create and manage
surveys, forms, and other types of web-based questionnaires.
The google form can be circulated by sending the link of the form to people to get responses.
Scannable OR code can be also be made using the link of the google form to easily get the
form filled from individuals. Data collected has been later used into the MS PowerPoint
presentation.
In October 2014, Google introduced add-ons for Google Forms that enable third-party
developers to add new features to surveys, while in July 2017, Google updated Forms to add
several new features. "Intelligent response validation" is capable of detecting text input in
form fields to identify what is written and ask the user to correct the information if wrongly
input. Depending on file-sharing settings in Google Drive, users can request file uploads from
individuals outside multi-option answers in a table. In Settings, users can make changes that
affect all new forms, such as always collecting email addresses.
Google Forms features all of the collaboration and sharing features found in Docs, Sheets,
Slides, Drawings, and Sites. This web application is useful among students, organisations,
companies, etc to collected specific data.
The aim of the research is to spread awareness about fake information, spams and scams
shared on Twitter and Facebook. Also, to show how Twitter is better than Facebook. Many
youngsters and senior citizen don’t know about authentic information and they easily fall for
fake news. Most of the people in the world use Facebook and Facebook has lots of fake
accounts and news. Vice versa Twitter has lesser number of fake accounts and news
compared to Facebook.
Through this research our group can create awareness about fake news and spams shared on
Twitter and Facebook among IT/CS students. Our aim also included to tell people how
Twitter is better than Facebook. The purpose of this research is to decrease scams and stop
people from falling in scams.
