talent and own life to serve. They weren’t only writers who responsibly express their
ideas but they are also respectful educators who firmly conquered difficulties and

Summary of the novel Jane Eyre

The commencement of this novel evoke a feeling of unhappiness and

dissatisfaction that is comparable to the cold temperate of winter. Due to our ten year
old protagonist name Jane Eyre was treated and excluded in the family of Reed she
was currently living. One day, John Reed the spoiled cousin of Jane found her in her
hiding place where she consider as her only isolation zone. As John discovered that
Jane was reading the book he then mock Jane as he spouted nonsense about her poor
father and boasted that she is just a mere burden orphan. He then grab the book and hit
the innocent and terrified girl resulting Jane to outburst in anger and said "Wicked and
cruel boy! You are like a murderer-- you are like a slave-driver-- you are like a Roman
emperors!" Those hurtful words affected and the causes of John's tears. after that he
dragged Jane and was ask for her mothers sympathy towards his vicious act. This
bullying often reoccurred not only or thrice a week but twice a day confessed by Jane.
She is suffering for a long time and the worst is she was always wrongly accused and
biasly punished by her Aunt Reed. Similar to this incident where she was locked up into
the red room. It was the time where she begged for her Aunt's mercy due to fear of that
room. The imagination and superstitious beliefs enveloped Jane due to the negative
feeling she bear that time. According to the stories told by Bessie supernatural being
3

such like ghost and other entity coexist with humans. Due to her young age she
presume that her uncle seeks revenge due to the unfulfilled before death wish it is for
Mrs. Reed to take care of her only niece, referring to Jane Eyre. This unjust
consequence of her anguish yet truthful rebuttal eventually became a psychological
torture for her as she stayed where exactly her uncle died and imagined it's ghost
tormenting her. she witness something which alarm her and desperately shouted asking
for help and instated that she'd seen a ghost. Mrs. Reed heard it and commanded
Bessie and Abbot to never entertain Jane's trickery and will not grant her plea as long
as Mrs. Reed seen that Jane reflected into her deeds. In that instant they left her there
alone and sided to what the cruel Mrs. Reed have been told. After that, she lost
consciousness and woke up lying in her own chambers bed and treated by Bessie and
aided with their physician name Mr. Lloyd. She spoken to Bessie if whether she has
ailment, "You fell sick, I suppose in the red-room with crying; you'll be better soon no
doubt." Bessie replied with pity to Jane's current situation. After that the housemaid
Bessie and Sarah slept together in the nursery as it is already over midnight. Jane was
up and dressed by noon after that day. She haven’t yet recovered even after a long day
of rest because she is still physically and mentally weak and disturbed the reason why
she shed tears continuously. After cleaning, Bessie went to the kitchen and served her
a tart in a delicately designed plate but sadness infected her like a plague and spread
into her mind as she put away the sweet pastry she dearly admired before. Bessie sang
a song with her sweet voice but its melody and tempo seems like sympathizes with
Jane’s sorrow while crying. Bessie comforted the young Jane as she said “ Come, Miss
Jane, don’t cry” but that genuine warmth she offered isn’t enough to cease the pain she
was suffering from. In that exact moment Mr. Lloyd entered the room and notice her
patient weeping consoled by Bessie and firstly greeted her before started a
conversation with Jane through asking her if she bearing any pain. She answered that
there is none so Bessie insinuated that the root of her having a low spirit is not allowing
Jane to go out with Mrs. Reed in the carriage along with her cousins. Without hesitancy
Jane opposed this interposition Bessie made by replying “Surely not! Why, she is too
old for pettishness” and added a statement “I never cried for such a thing in my life: I
hate going out in the carriage. I cry because I am miserable.” The continuation of Jane
and Mr. Lloyd’s talk occurred to the discovery of why she got ill saying that it was
because of she was frightened for the ghost that appears in that eerie dark room and
enunciated her feeling of loneliness having no loving family which is a accurate
reasoning of her life’s miserableness. The more time they consume the deeper Mr.
Lloyd apprehends the poor girl’s struggle as he discover that her patient prefers more to
be in school rather than to live neither her poor father’s relatives nor living in a luxurious
however loveless family of her Uncle Reed based on her experiences. Before ending
their heart to heart talk “Well, well! Who knows what may happen?” whereas it indicates
a good prognostication. While Jane is lying on her bed she heard Abbot and Bessie
privately talking in the nursery about Mrs. Reed’s plan to dispatch the burden child in
their noble family and on the same occasion she find out that her mother married a
mediocre clergyman, Jane’s father. The unfortunate death of both his parents due to
severe typhus fever infested them, which in turn, the main reason of why Jane is
currently living with her mother’s brother referring to deceased Mr. Reed’s tyrannical
family.

On fifteenth of January the Gateshead where the family of Reed is based a new
guest Mr. Brocklehurst has arrive to visit and personally meet Jane due to Mrs. Reed’s
application to send her niece-in-law to Lowood School manage by Mr. Brocklehurst
himself. They ask Jane for her audience and he then scrutinized Jane and after awhile
the man deliver an interrogative sentences to confirm whether she is a good girl but that
silenced her as for her own apprehension of being a good person is completely to
Reeds family’s standard of that adjective. Mrs. Reed interposed by shaking her head
which signifies disapproval and enunciated her reply “Perhaps the less said on that
subject the better, Mr. Brocklehurst” that simply reflects her unfair personal opinion
towards the little girl’s behavior. The guest again ask some other questions that alludes
from biblical information about consequences of being wicked but Jane answered those
with sarcasm. Her Aunt and Mr. Brocklehurst continued to communicate insulting and
hurtful alternatives to aids Jane’s false apprehended behavior. The visitor headed his
way home which had became cue for Jane to vocalize her resentment not only to the
mendacious information she told to Mr. Brocklehurst but also to the thing she and her
family have abusively done to her. For that reason all her deeply buried feelings
snowballed towards Mrs. Reed as a signal of revolts towards her antipathy aunt.

‘I am glad you are no relation of mine: I will never call you aunt again as long as
I live. I will never come to see you when I am grown up; and if any one asks me
how I liked you, and how you treated me, I will say the very thought of you makes
me sick, and that you treated me with miserable cruelty’, Jane asserted. Then
Mrs. Reed replied as she was taken aback of what did Jane uttered, ‘How dare
you affirm that, Jane Eyre?’ ‘‘How dare I, Mrs. Reed? How dare I? Because it is
the TRUTH. You think I have no feelings, and that I can do without one bit of love
or kindness; but I cannot live so: and you have no pity. I shall remember how you
thrust me back—roughly and violently thrust me back—into the redroom, and
locked me up there, to my dying day; though I was in agony; though I cried out,
while suffocating with distress, ‘Have mercy! Have mercy, Aunt Reed!’ And that
punishment you made me suffer because your wicked boy struck me—knocked
me down for nothing. I will tell anybody who asks me questions, this exact tale.
People think you as a good woman, but you are bad, hard- hearted. YOU are
deceitful!" affirmed by Jane in their discourse.

There are more heart-piercing refutes that have been released from Jane’s lips
and consequently made her auntie leave the apartment embarked with shocked and
inferiority, As to refer from the digitalized novel of Jane Eyre courtesy to Planet
eBook.com. At exactly 5 o’clock in the morning of January 19, Bessie found Jane
preparing herself for leaving the Gateshead. When she was walking towards the front
door and spoken her farewell in soliloquy manner. With a 50 miles of traveled distance
Jane arrived in her destination having rainy, windy and dark settings and due to
exhaustion she take her rest as soon as bedtime occurred. Morning came, she spends
her days following the routines to conform children’s organization while she thoroughly
observes the wholeness of the school. She met and talk Helen, who inform her that
Lowood School is a charity institution conducive to orphans as beneficiary. The day
after she noticed that Helen is mistreated by Miss Scatcherd because this young child

proclaim that Jane is liar young girl no one dared to converse with her but thankfully
Miss Temple and Helen sided and believed in her innocence. Thee kind-hearted Miss
Temple commit a countermeasure by asking for Mr. Lloyd’s confirmation letter about
Jane’s decency and preceded to her happy study. The lack of food supply and facility to
secure the learners health during the season of spring added as factor that escalate the
numbers of students infested by typhus. Due to consumption Helen’s health declined as
her true friend Jane sneakily entered the fever room where her dying friend is resting.
During her presence they conversed about how happy Helen is as her upcoming death
is the gate towards a life without suffering which is an religious allusion of Christian
beliefs about death whom lived with goodness. Jane genuinely caress her friend Helen
until her last breath in her embrace.

A few years later Jane devote herself into studying and teaching at the same time.
She really did excelled in academic matter seek for change and sense of adventure to

savor the beauty of Thornfield. At that moment, she brushed with a man rider into his
horse along side by a dog, unluckily, the horse and the man did slip on ice in the Hay
lane. At first the man refused Jane’s help but the time she notice that the man had
sprained her leg she then insisted and got the approval of the anonymous man’s
approval if her assistance. In an instant after the man thanked Jane’s helpfulness they
traveler disappeared into her sight. In her arrival to the Thornfield Hall she suddenly
discovered that the unknown she help was the master of the land, Mr. Rochester.
During their tea time Jane’s description of Mr. Rochester’s facial feature is grim, manly
physique, formal and commanding attitude during their conversation which interest her.
Adele is the daughter of French opera dancer names Celine Varens whom Mr.
Rochester formerly loved and unsurely said that the father was Mr. Rochester but he is
unconvinced because of Celine’s unfaithfulness. After their multiple of honest
conversation the interest as for Jane latter became fond towards Mr. Rochester. The
interference within Jane’s mind towards the neophyte feeling towards his master made
her anxious that causes of her sleep deprivation. At two in thee morning, her rooms
door had been scratched from the opposite side afterwards she heard a devilish
laughter. At first she tremble from fear but when she overcome that she notice that Mr.
Rochester’s room is covered with smoke, she alertly headed to wake his master

pitchers water which eventually awakens his master. Mr. Rochester direct Jane to hide
this incident from others for an unknown and intriguing cause. In the morrow after the
attempted arson Grace Poole whom Jane suspect who’s responsible for the happening

had became more transparent as she felt jealous of his master and the astonishing lady
Blanche Ingram, one of the party guest of Mr. Rochester. During the slumber of the
guest and Thornfield’s residence there were a sudden interference as Mr. Mason got
bitten and stabbed Jane assist Mr. Rochester to aid him. For the following days, Her
cousin John’s demise results Jane to hastily return in Gateshead. The long since
happened mistreatment and antipathy she experienced from the Reed’s had already
faded she already comprehend the roots of Mrs. Reeds hatred darted to Jane as she
inherited the Reed’s fortune and late Johns Reed’s favor. Over the succeeding days of
Mrs. Reeds funeral, the protagonist receive a news from Mrs. Fairfax stating that master

Characters

Jane Eyre
The heroine of this tale who succeeds the conflict from different circumstance and later
the causes of her strong resolve. Being orphan that nowhere to be called home
proceeds her find someone who will truly loves her. The warmth that comforts her heart
and fill up the belongingness. Psychologically and scientifically speaking, as chemicals
in the brain have been released it causes a sudden feeling of so called Love. Despite
the fact that Jane belongs to the upper-class family she was treated as an illicit noble by
the Reeds family because her father behold no high status in the society. The portrayal
of conflict between social classes in novel causes Jane to burden her life and from
riches to rag which more preferred by Jane she willingly enter the school for orphans.
Therefore, I conclude with certainty that the struggles of Charlotte Bronte brought by
social stratification in England during her existence awakens her passion to prelude her
legacy in writing specifically the novel Jane Eyre. The main character Jane is the
fictional persona that mirrors the author and this novel partially narrates the episodes of
Charlotte Bronte's triumph in life. This novel provides a justifications that the author
herself upholds equality despites of variation on races, social status and wealth,
representing none of the social standing. On the other hand, she firmly evokes
goodness, appropriate attitude and proper ethical standards implicates that Charlotte is
a person who has prowess to psychologically persuade humanity to diverse norms and
customs with a beneficial aftermath.

Helen Burns

A good friend of Jane who suffer from ill-treatment of Miss Scatcherd the same reason
why all other students avoid to interact with Helen. She has a saintess characteristics as
she whole-heartedly exercise a the practice and teachings of Christ around the clock of
her existence and coincidentally died during the typhus incident at Lowood.

Mrs. Alice Fairfax

She is the housekeeper of the Thornfield Hall described as a tidy, gentle and
kindhearted elderly lady. The on who compassionately guided the adult Jane during her
employment in Thornfield Hall.

Mr. Brocklehurst

The treasurer of the Lowood School’s for orphans whom did wrongly labeled the young
Jane as Liar. Almost eight years had passed, Mr. Brocklehurst received a humiliation in
the occurrence of children’s massive bacterial infection incident due to typhus fever and
negligence to provide a proper faculties for the orphan learners.

Grace Poole
8

A nurse attendant of the Thornfield Hall, whereas Jane assumes that she attempted to
murder Edward Fairfax Rochester by setting fire into his master’s four pillar bed curtain.

John Eyre

Jane’s uncle in fathers side whom all his riches is given to her niece Jane as his only
closest relatives. He is also the one who ordered the Mason to legally discontinue the
marriage or Jane and Mr. Rochester without ill-intentions.

St. John Rivers

He is a respected man due to his kindness and deeply devoted to exercise the sanctity
of Christian rituals and customs. Latter, obsessively proposed Jane for a marriage with
accordance to Jane’s good quality. A marriage without love in between is metaphorically
relevant to a tool which is decided due to benefits and functions.

Mr. Edward Fairfax Rochester

The master of the Thornfield Hall whom hid his wife because of her mental decapitation.
He is also the leading man of this novel's protagonist, Jane Eyre. The kindness of
saving everyone during the fire incident held at Thornfield hall he loss both his sight and
one arm. The obstacles he'd face and dearth of affection from his family and partners
conformed him to have a rough and intimidating attitude. Additionally, Mr. Rochester’s
love towards Jane cannot be expound psychologically by attachment alone but more
importantly the ideality of her innate characteristics which Mr. Rochester never found on
her former partners. Especially to Bertha Mason that he mistakenly believed that the
urge of lust was the love he delves for. My hypothesis in this case is Mr. Rochester’s
family never did offer him a genuine affection and even attention leads to misconception
and confusion of feelings in the later years of his growth.

Bertha Mason Rochester

Edward Rochester’s first wife who’s responsible for terrifying incidents occurred in
house of Rochester due to her insanity. Her psychopathic behavior is scientifically
explained as it is hereditary because her father and brother was recorded suffering from
same mental illness that is taken care in an asylum.

John Reed

The eldest cousin of Jane Eyre who constantly bullies her on their childhood days
while she was living at Gateshead. Based on his character he have a superiority
complex which I presume that it is due to lenient tolerance of his mother towards all his
actions that directly depicts cruelty and immaturity. “A superiority complex is a behavior
that suggests a person believes they’re somehow superior to others. People with this
complex often have exaggerated opinions of themselves. They may believe their
abilities and achievements surpass those of others” (Holland, 2019).
9

The settings not only compliments as background for beautification but it also hold a
important key for the scenes to illustrates the narratives of the story with details and
definition. The other purpose of author as she deploys setting to artistically employ the
literary devices most especially the imagery and symbolism which flourish the readers
imagination, literary interest, cultural and religious events indicated into this novel. One
of the ulterior motive Charlotte Bronte employed England as the settings is to criticize
arousing issues that pester this land during 19 th century. This also promotes the cultural
heritages including the utilization of gothic structure which delineate the gloomy and
thrilling plot of the story.

Relevance of the Novel to Modern Times
