How can we combat fake news and disinformation?

With so many sources of information online, it has become difficult to make sense of what
content is based on fact, half-truths or lies. There are many websites where we share things that
we believe to be true when they may not be, but others may see them as facts. First of all, how
can fake news impact those who see it? Fake news and disinformation can covertly modify the
behaviour of individuals. This can be especially dangerous for children and young people who
can be persuaded to take on distorted views of the world that could cause them or others harm in
the real world.

Based on my research, 86% of internet users have been duped by fake news according to a global
survey. I myself have also been tricked by fake news that I found on Facebook. I always use
Facebook as my go-to-information platform where I am updated on what is happening in the
world. I was deceived by this news that there will be a typhoon coming and there will be no
classes. After I saw this news, I immediately forward it to my classmates, friends, and family. I
had no idea that it was fake, thankfully someone corrected me and I sincerely apologised for my
mistake because someone believed it. Have you guys been tricked by fake news or any
disinformation? Hopefully not.

Now that I have shared my experience about fake news, let’s now focus on the main question.
How can we combat fake news and disinformation? Make sure to check the information or news
before you share. In reading an article, read it in full to make sure the title accurately reflects the
content. Lastly, know how to separate facts and fiction online and ask your close friends and
family if the news or information is true. Let’s stop fake news for a better and true world.
Remember not everything you see on the internet is true!
