Scammed: Fake News Domination in Modern World

Good afternoon everyone, I would like to start my speech with this statement, “Lamang ang may
alam '' by Kuya Kim Atienza, only those who know. Only those who know what is true and
fake, what is right and wrong. Today’s modern world with technological advances, information is
easy to grasp and to be found. But how can we be sure that it is Fact and not Fake? How can we
lessen the sharing of misinformation? According to Inquirer.net, “A new Pulse Asia survey
revealed that about 9 in 10 Filipino adults, or 86 percent, see the proliferation of “fake news” as a
problem in the country”. People nowadays find it easy to believe things they see on the internet
or gossip that are being shared. And I believe that it is also one of the factors why the Philippines
can’t grow as a country with such incompetent aspect in society, however, we can’t blame people
wholly. This also implies that we lack in the aspect of education all over the country, lack of a
great foundation in knowledge, according to Nelson Madela, "Education is the most powerful
weapon you can use to change the world". How can we grow if we let fake news flourish in the
society we live in? We must learn to always ask and seek for the truth. Lately, there have been
reports of syndicate crimes of scamming with Filipino through online providing jobs for them in
Thailand but they were scammed and lead to Borders of Thailand and Myanmar, also known as
the Scam City, a cryptocurrency scam in Myanmar. Forcing them to work by scamming people
also. Some were rescued, but they found hundreds of people also tied to the syndicate.

We should always check the source of information. Fake news sites can be identified by several
factors, including checking the source, author, other sources, maintaining a critical mindset,
checking facts, checking comments, checking biases, checking if the story is a joke, and
checking images. To identify a fake news site, check the web address, author's credibility, other
reputable news outlets, and the author's motivation. If the article is also reported by other
reputable news outlets, it's a good sign. Additionally, check the date and timeline of the article, as
false information can contain incorrect dates or altered timelines. Checking the comments can
also assist in identifying probable sources of false information. Consider your personal biases as
well as whether the story is satire or parody. Images on social media can be changed or distorted,
and using a fact-checking website can help verify an article's legitimacy.

Remember that we are responsible for the things we share with others either verbal or online.
Proper communication will also affect the sharing of information conveying the message
properly will help lessen the miscommunication which leads to misleading information. Also,
online etiquette must be in our minds to be responsible for the information we share online.
Knowledge is power, you can’t be fool easily if you know what certain information is fact or
fake.
