To find the Unknown Forces in various portions of

hanging cord
Lab Report # 1

Objectives
Find the Unknown Forces in various portions of hanging cord

Apparatus
 Set square
 Thumb pins
 A3 sheets
 Weights (0.5-2lb)

Theory Background
It’s based on the law of polygon of forces which states that when the
system of uniplanar forces acting on a point is in equilibrium it forms
a closed figure.

Figures
Lab Report # 1

Procedure
 Make arrangement of the apparatus.
Lab Report # 1

 Attach the weights on across of hanging chord & also in the

middle.
 Take a sheet of paper & fix it on board with the help of pins.
 Make sure the system is in equilibrium.
 Now by using mirror, indicate the points of image of string.
 By joining these points complete the figure.
 Select a suitable scale in order to represent weight forces on
diagram.
 Now with the help of set-squares, draw the parallel sides & find
the unknown tensions T1 & T2 in the string according to the scale.

Calculations
Scale
1lb = 2inch
2lb = 1inch
0.8lb = 1.6inch
0.85lb = 1.7inch

Result
T1 = 1lb T2 = 0.8lb
T3 = 0.85lb T4 = 1lb
