To find out forces developed in various parts of wall

crane
Lab Report # 4

Objectives
To find unknown tensile and compressive forces developed in
wall crane due to load applied.
Apparatus
 Weights(0.5lb – 2lb)
 Wall Crane
 Measuring tape
Theory Background
Wall Crane A crane having a jib with or without trolley and
supported from a side wall or lines columns of the building. It had three
main parts.
1. Upper Arm It produce tensile force and had a hydraulic system
with a load measuring spring balance.
2. Lower Arm It produces compressive force and had a spring
system with a load measuring spring balance.
3. Pulley It simply helps the load in lifting by converting
reciprocating motion into smooth rotatory motion.

Procedure
 Assemble the wall crane and check for errors before doing
experiment
 Take weights W1 and hang it in the weight hanger.
 Measure the tension, (ΔT = T2-T1) and compression, (ΔQ = Q2-Q1)
by their respective spring balance.
 Now measure the length AB, BC, CD, DA with the help of
measuring tape.
 Calculate the final lengths and compare the results with the
measured values.

Data
T1=2lb, T2=3lb
Q1=2lb, Q2=203lb
AB=10inch
BC=11inch
CD=20.9inch
DA=21.5inch

Calculations
Lab Report # 4

Scale
let 1lb =1inch
2lb =2inch
also, let 10inch=1inch
then AB =1inch
BC =1.1inch
CD =2.09inch
DA =2.15inch
ΔT = T2-T1 => 0.5inch
ΔQ = Q2-Q1 => 0.3inch
