To Find Forces in Various Parts of the Roof Trusses

Objectives
Lab Report # 5

Find Forces in Various Parts of the Roof Trusses.

Apparatus
 Roof truss
 Weights(1-5lb)
 Spring balances
 Thread
 Measuring tape

Theory Background
Roof trusses are structures in which different combination of member
support loads that are applied on them.
Here some of the members are in tension & some are in compression.
The truss needs a ground support as well reactions forces would be
found in this experiment graphically.

Figures
Lab Report # 5

Procedure
 Note the reading of the scale which is in between the elements of
truss A & B.
 Suspend some weights up on to the hook.
 Then note the values of the tension in the apparatus. Take the
difference between current and previous values.
 This will be the force due to suspended load.
Lab Report # 5

 By using the geographical method we will find tension T b/w two

surfaces in elements AB.

Calculations
Scale
10” = 1”
28” = 2.8”
23.5” = 2.35”

S.No W AB BC AC
lb Inch Inch inch
1. 4 37 23.5 28
2. 6 37.5 23.5 28
3. 10 38 23.5 28

Result
RA = 0.85 in => 1.7 lb
Lab Report # 5

RB = 1.175 in => 2.35 lb

T = 0.9 in => 1.8 lb
P = 1.35 in => 2.7 lb
Q = 1.55 in => 3.1 lb
