Modelling and Control of Dynamic System

Tutorial 6

1. A mass of 20kg is supported by a spring and damper as shown in Figure 1 (a) below.
The system is at rest for t < 0. At t = 0, a mass of 2 kg is added to the 20 kg mass. The
system vibrates as show in Figure 1 (b). Determine the spring constant k and the
viscous-friction coefficient b. [Note that (0.02/0.08) x 100 = 25% maximum
overshoot corresponds to 𝜻 = 0.4.]

2. When the system shown in Figure 2 (a) below is subjected to a unit step input, the
system output responds as shown in Figure 2 (b). Determine the values of K and T
from the response curve.

3. Determine the value, of K and k of the closed-loop system shown in Figure 3 so that
the maximum overshoot in unit-step response is 25% and the peak time is 2 sec.
Assume J = 1 kg-m2.

Answers;

1. b = 58.8 N.s/m k = 245.25 N/m

2. T = 1.099 kg K = 1.428 N/m
3. K = 2.95 N.m k = 0.471 s
