Indonesia, formally the Republic of Indonesia, 

is a transcontinental republic that

straddles the Indian and Pacific seas in the southeastern portion of Asia and the

western part of Oceania. It is made up of more than 17,000 islands, including

Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, and portions of Borneo and New Guinea. With 1,904,569

square kilometers, Indonesia is the world's biggest archipelagic state and the 14th-

largest country by area (735,358 square miles). Indonesia is the world's fourth-

most populous country, with over 275 million inhabitants, and the most populous

Muslim-majority country. Moreover half of the country's population lives in Java,

the world's most populated island.

Indonesia is a presidential republic with a legislature that is elected by the people.

It is divided into 38 provinces, nine of which have special status. Jakarta, the

country's capital, is the world's second-most populous city.
