READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST

Write your name and class on all the work you hand in.
Write in dark blue or black pen on both sides of the paper.
You may use a soft pencil for any diagrams or graphs.
Do not use staples, paper clips, highlighters, glue or correction fluid.

Answer all the questions.

Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures, or 1 decimal place in the case of angles in
degrees, unless a different level of accuracy is specified in the question.
You are expected to use a graphic calculator.
Unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are allowed unless a question specifically states otherwise.
Where unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are not allowed in a question, you are required to
present the mathematical steps using mathematical notations and not calculator commands.
You are reminded of the need for clear presentation in your answers.

At the end of the examination, fasten all your work securely together.
The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question.

1a The complex numbers s and w satisfy the equations

s  w  6i and sw  10 .
Given that Re(s) > 0, solve the equations for s and w , giving all answers in the form x  iy , where
x and y are real. [4]
Hence find the solution to the following equations
u  v  6 and uv  10 .
Give your answers for u and v in the form x  iy , where x and y are real. [2]
1b Find, in the form x  iy , where x, y   , the possible values of the complex number z satisfying

2. A ball with constant radius and centre A , represented by position vector 4i  2 j  3k , is fixed on a
plane p1 at point B as shown in the diagram below. Plane p1 is given by the equation

2 x  y  2 z  7 .

p1 : 2 x  y  2 z   7

(i) Find the position vector of point B. [3]

(ii) Show that the radius of the sphere is 3 units. [1]
(iii) Another plane p2 is parallel to plane p1 and it intersects the ball at only one point. Find the

equation of p2 in scalar product form. [3]

y5
(iv) Plane p3 contains the point A and intersects p1 in the line x  2  , z  3 . Determine
2
the acute angle between p1 and p3 . [3]

4. The trapezium ABCD is such that AD is parallel to BC and the lengths AB = BC = CD = 2 cm. Given
that angle BAD = angle ADC = , where  is acute, show that the area of the trapezium, T cm2, is
given by T  4sin   2sin 2 . [2]
(i) Find the exact stationary value of T and determine whether this value of T is a maximum or
a minimum value. [5]

(ii) Determine the rate at which T is changing when   given that  is increasing at a rate of

radians per second . [3]

5. The probability density function of the discrete random variable is given by
P  X  x   c  3  x  , for x  0,1, 2,3. Find the constant, c and Var(X3). [4]

6. The mass of a Munchi pear is normally distributed with mean mass 120g and standard deviation 10g.

(i) If two Munchi pears are chosen at random, find the probability that one of the pears will have
a mass between 100g and 126g while the other will have a mass of less than 115g. [2]

(ii) If ten Munchi pears are chosen at random, find the probability that exactly three of the pears
will have a mass more than 122g each. [2]

The mass of a Fuchi apple is normally distributed with mean mass 115g and standard deviation 8g.

(iii) Find the probability that the total mass of three randomly chosen Fuchi apples will be more
than three times the mass of a randomly chosen Munchi pear. [2]
7. Find the number of different arrangements of the letters of the word SALOON if
(i) no two vowels are next to each other, [2]
(ii) the two ‘O’s are separated. [2]

8. Two fair eight-sided dice are thrown. The faces on each die are numbered “2” to “9”, and the events
A, B and C are defined as follows:
A : the sum of the two scores is odd
B : at least one of the two scores is greater than 6.
C : the two scores are equal.

can win both $10 and $15. [1]
(ii) Determine if the events A and B are independent. [3]
(iii) Find P  A  B ' . [2]
9. In a large population the proportion of people with disability is 15%. A random sample of 20 people
is taken.
(i) State, in context, an assumption needed for the number of people in the sample with disability
to be well modelled by a binomial distribution. [1]
(ii) Four such samples of 20 people are taken. Find the probability that two of these samples have
exactly one person with disability, and the other two samples have more than two people with
disability. [3]
(iii) Find the least number of such samples of 20 people that must be taken so that the probability
of having at least two samples with more than two people with disability is not less than 0.95.
