hours. Wiring must be within the lift well.

n  The firefighting lift does NOT have to
serve every floor of the building.
•  An airport control tower does not need
an obstruction to clear 360 degree
vision!

EN 81-73 Behaviour of lifts in the event of fire

Applies to all types of lifts in all types


of buildings (Lifts Directive) (but!)
•  To reduce the risk of passengers being
trapped in the lift if there is a fire in the
building
•  To show to the firefighters that lift does not
contain trapped passengers
•  To reduce the risk of passengers being
exposed to fire and smoke
•  Does not apply to firefighting lifts

n  Operation of lift during evacuation is
similar to a firefighting lift
•  Under control of an evacuation assistant

n  Between car, evacuation exit floor(s) and any
machine room and emergency or rescue panel
n  Built in speaker and microphone, not a
telephone handset
n  Fire protected, including wiring, to same degree

as lift well
n  Must remain operational for at least 1 hour

during any evacuation or in case of loss of


power supply.
