My name is Ronaldo M.

Yabut, currently teaching at Mercedes Elementary School, Mercedes

Camarines Norte.

Being a part of a significant project can be considered a privilege, especially knowing that it will

help improve a process for the students' welfare, which they can use in their future.

In September 2016, our journey began with four other fellow teachers of the Continuous

Improvement (CI) Program and began developing a Research Project based on the data our school had.

The team assigned me as a documenter of the project, the one who take photos of the activity,

safekeeping of the documents, doing the presentations. Still, I also helped organize, analyze, and verify

data.

We focus on the processes that take place within the school. Based on the data we gathered, we

validated it, and we developed Project MERCEDES - Mercedes Elementary School Enhancing Reading

Comprehension in English through Developing Essential Skills. We have taken the right steps so that we

can also get good results. We looked at the curriculum and learning activities of our school. We found

some problems in the process of teaching reading in the classroom. We developed solutions, pilot-tested

it, and conducted roll-out of solutions in the school. We validated the findings, we asked some

recommendations, concluded the success of our research project.

If I am allowed to conduct research, the topic that I would be interested in pursuing is about the

effectiveness of the reading programs in school because I believe Reading has a vital role in the learning

process. It is one of the macro skills of communication that can be correlated to the pupils' academic

performance. Most of the actions and tasks in all the content areas require the students to read. It is a

mandatory skill that will help the pupils to relate to their lessons. In the actual learning context, these

struggling readers will not understand the concepts and will fail to attain the learning competencies

expected to them because of a lack of skill in Reading. I believe that because of my research project, I

can help to improve practice and to shape policy.
