FILL-IN GAPS

PRACTICE 1
You are going to read an act of honesty. Six sentences have been removed from the passage. Choose
from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (1 to 6). There are two extra sentences which
you do not need to use.

1 The silkworm caterpillar is a very choosy eater, it eats only mulberry leaves. In silk

factories, the caterpillars are reared in huge numbers on trays lined with mulberry leaves. When the
caterpillars are about to turn into pupae, twigs are put on the tray. The caterpillars then
spin their cocoon on the twigs. What we know as silk is really a hardened liquid from the caterpillar's
mouth. 2

Silk is produced by several insects. 3 There has been some research into other types of silk,
which differ at the molecular level. 4 Silk production also occurs in bees, wasps, ants,
silverfish, mayflies, thrips, leafhoppers, beetles, lacewings, fleas, flies and midges. Other types of
arthropods produce silk, most notably various arachnids, such as spiders.

Ironically, in the silk factory, it is during this stage that the silk workers harvest silk. The cocoon is
heated to kill the pupa inside it. 5 The threads may be dyed or used in its raw form
to make material for clothes. Perhaps now you may begin to understand why articles made of silk can
be so expensive. 6

You are going to read about the chief of desert - camel. Six sentences have been removed from the
passage. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (1 to 6). There are two extra
sentences which you do not need to use.

1 Many people think that the camel stores water in its hump, but the hump is really
made up of fats. That is why you can tell a healthy camel from a sick one by its hump! 2

When a camel cannot find water, it passes less urine to conserve the small amount of water it has in its
body. 3 This means that it starts to sweat  at a higher temperature than that which human
beings, for example, start to perspire. 4 Moreover, in  man, the loss of water thickens the
blood. This is what makes man needs water. 5

6 Because of its unique ability to adapt  to desert conditions, it is no wonder that the camel is
the chief means of travel in the desert.

This also helps it to keep water loss through

You are going to read about the jigsaw puzzle. Six sentences have been removed from the passage.
Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (1 to 6). There are two extra sentences
which you do not need to use.

1 In the eighteenth century, a map maker called John Spilsbury thought of a way which
makes learning geography an interesting experience for children. What he did was to paste maps on
large blocks of wood. 2 Children had fun  putting the interlocking pieces together to form a
complete map. While they did so, they also learnt more about the geography of the world.

Today, the jigsaw puzzle is not only used for learning. 3 Jigsaw puzzles now come in all
kinds of shapes and sizes. Very young children can be kept occupied with large, colorful jigsaw
puzzles.
4

If you are resourceful, you may even want to create your own jigsaw puzzle. 5 First, glue
your picture firmly onto the wood. 6 When this is done, you can then saw the wood into

You are going to read about the myths of unicorn. Six sentences have been removed from the passage.
Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (1 to 6). There are two extra sentences
which you do not need to use.

In legends and myths, we often come across strange creatures like the phoenix or the dragon.
1 The griffin is supposed to have the head of an eagle and the body of a lion.

Of all these creatures, the one that has fascinated man throughout the ages is the unicorn. The unicorn
is believed to be a creature that resembles a horse. 2 This beautiful creature lives alone in the
forests.

In medieval Europe, some people had claimed to possess the unicorn's horn. According to them, the
horn was believed to have magical properties . 3 The horn was also precious in another way; it
could be used to detect any trace of poison in drinking water.

No man has ever captured the unicorn. In Europe, there was a legend that the only way to capture a
unicorn is to leave a young girl in the forest all by herself . 4

Do unicorns really exist? These creatures were said to have been sighted as early as 400 B.C.

Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (1 to 6). There are two extra sentences

Everyone feels tired at one time or another. 1 The sportsman feels tired after hours  of physical
training. Why do we get tired? The explanation is that when you exercise a muscle in your body over
and over again, substances known as 'fatigue toxins' are produced. 2 In the end, not only does
that muscle feel tired but the whole body feels tired as well.

3 Sleeping is one of the best ways to fully 'recharge' your tired body. Most importantly, the
damage caused by tired muscles is slowly being repaired when we sleep.

Nevertheless, sleeping is not the only way to get our bodies rested. 4 For example, after a hard
day's work, the office worker may want to go for a relaxing walk. After a long tiring day at school, the
student prefers jogging to resting at home. 5 When your body is tired, one way of curing
tiredness is by improving the body's blood circulation. When we take part in an activity, our blood
circulation is improved. 6

WRITING A STORY

Writing better texts in English:

Improving a text with adjectives and adverbs

Read the following text. What is missing?

It was a day in November. When the weather had changed overnight, a storm had brought rain to
the country. Mrs. Anderson drove down the road with her bike. The morning sun was shining into her
eyes, the air was blowing against her skin, the trees, and the grass. While she was driving, she thought
about yesterday. When she was going through the park after work, she saw there were lots of residents
with their cats and dogs and the guy that sold the fast food that she likes near the fountain. She even
talked to a stranger and asked him about his dog.

She was also already looking forward to her holiday that she wanted to spend in the rain forest with
all the animals and plants there. She hoped to find a tour guide, offering trips to the nature of the island.
She had also talked to her sister and asked her to join her holiday trip.
