RC500 hardware components

Remote Terminal Unit (RTU)

Honeywell RC500 RTU is a modular and scalable controller that easily integrates with
Honeywell Experion to give industrial manufacturers tighter control of remote
operations. The RC500 is designed to withstand harsh environment and is ideal for
remote automation needs, such as, those found in oil and gas applications. Its power
consumption is very low. This makes it suitable to provide continuous monitoring of
remote-fixed assets. The RC500 RTUs integrate seamlessly with Honeywell's Experion
SCADA system. The following are the three types of RTUs.
• RC-SCONTRL
• RC-MVACONTRL
• RC-MVBCONTRL

4. Release overview
4.1 New features
Support for DNP3 Multi-Master configuration
With R200, to support Experion redundancy, IP-based and port-based Multi-Masters are
introduced that allow multiple DNP3 masters to fetch data from RC500 through the
configured IP addresses and the configured TCP port numbers, respectively. Each DNP3
master can have up to four IP addresses to support Experion redundancy.
For more information, refer to Honeywell RC500 SCONTRL RTU User’s Guide and
Honeywell RC500 MVACONTRL MVBCONTRL RTU User’s Guide.

Support for Ethernet I/O-2 module configuration using web interface

With R200, the web interface can be utilized to configure Ethernet I/O-2 module. The
following tasks are involved in the Ethernet I/O-2 module configuration.
• Configure general settings
• Configure Ethernet ports
• Configure RS485 ports
• Configure USB port
• Configure discrete options
• Configure discrete input channels
• Configure discrete output channels
• Configure analog options
• Configure analog input channels
• Configure analog output channels
• Configure I/O transfers
The web interface also displays the base connection diagram, screw assignments, module
circuit diagram, and jumper settings of the module. It is recommended to use Internet

4. Release overview
4.1. New features

Explorer 8.0. For more information, refer to Honeywell RC500 Ethernet IO-2 User’s
Guide.

Support for RC500 diagnostic display configuration

With R200, RC500 diagnostic display is introduced that can be installed in Experion and
enables remote diagnosis of field issues. The diagnostic display provides information on
General RTU diagnostics, Communication port diagnostics, Data log diagnostics, and
DNP3 protocol run time health parameters. DNP3 run time health parameters are
applicable for RC500 - DNP3 RTUs only (if the communication protocol between
RC500 and Experion is DNP3). You can configure the detail display for DNP3 and the
Modbus controllers.

Qualification of RC500 switches

With R200, RC500 switches are qualified to be used with RC500 components. These
switches provide compact DIN rail package, protected circuitry, and powerful software to
your system such that the system performs efficiently even in the tough conditions.
The RC500 switches are used for communication between the RC500 RTUs and the
Ethernet I/O-2 modules. The RC500 switches support ring topology for connecting all
the Ethernet I/O-2 modules in ring mode.
The following models of RC500 switches are qualified.
• RC-5MS-1 Switch: 5-port industrial Ethernet managed switch
− The RC-5MS-1 switch is used to establish communication redundancy between
RC500 RTU (RC-SCONTRL/RC-MVACONTRL/RC-MVBCONTRL) and
RC500 Ethernet I/O-2 modules in ring topology. The RC-5MS-1 switch is
mainly used to establish RTU redundancy for the RC-SCONTRL.
• RC-8MS-1 Switch: 8-port industrial Ethernet managed switch
− The RC-8MS-1 switch is used if more number of Ethernet ports are required.
For example, this is used when the RTU needs to communicate to more number
of Ethernet-based Modbus devices.

Honeywell December 2011
7. Problems to be resolved
7.1 Known issues
This section lists the known issues.

PAR Description

1-D43JF7 Error Indication: Station does not display DNP3

redundancy link setting after channel modification.

Description: The DNP3 interface is currently the only

daemon-based interface that allows for redundant ports. If
a DNP3 channel is configured as non-redundant and
subsequently attempts are made to change to a
redundant, a second, though inactive dnpdmn.exe
process is started by the server. This second dnpdmn.exe
process will exist even if the server is restarted.

Recovery: None

Workaround: Rebuild the controllers.

1-DB5SVD Error Indication: Multiple logical DNP3 controllers cannot

be associated to an RTU.

Description: When multiple DNP3 controllers are

associated to an RTU, field device values can be
accessed by only one of the DNP3 controllers in Experion.

Recovery: None

Workaround: None. This is an enhancement from

Experion DNP3 interface side and currently not
implemented.

1-DHZ58N Error Indication: DNP3 Channel and controller

communication fluctuates between ‘online’ and ‘failed’
frequently.

Description: It is observed that the scanning

configuration on the DNP3 channel is more than the
channel can handle as the channel is overloaded.

Recovery: None.

Workaround: Refer to the Technical Note recommending

required configuration.

PAR Description

1-HB8LY5 Error Indication: DNP3 interface does not support

Unsolicited and Class Polling simultaneously during
unprecedented scanning.

Description: Refer Error Indication.

Recovery: None.

Workaround: Refer to the Technical Note svrtn290.pdf on

Honeywell Online Support Site (OLS).

1-EFM433 Error Indication: When a DNP3 TCP/IP channel link is

disabled, the TCP/IP socket connection to the controller is
not actually closed until the link is re-enabled.

Description: The severity of this problem is depends on

the Experion configuration and controller's configuration.
As the socket is still connected, the controller can attempt
to send unsolicited messages. If one of those unsolicited
messages has the IIN Restart bit on the Experion,
application layer will turn it off even though the channel
link is disabled.

Ensure that the TCP/IP socket connection to the controller

is closed when the channel is disabled. After the closure
of the socket, there should be no messages in the server
log regarding unsolicited messages as there isn’t any
existing connection.

Recovery: None

Workaround: Disable unsolicited message from the RTU.

Download configuration once again to RTU. Download
once again DNP3 Channel and controller configuration
from Quick Builder.

OCCURRENCE Events are generated when the clocks (time) are
synchronized. Master requests for events after
Slave clock become unsynchronized (that is
Master does not issue clock sync command with
the expected time period).
Gap:
RC500 reported the events generated as
unsynchronized events.

3 CLASS 1 DATA DNP3 master requests for class 1 events, DNP3

WITHOUT CONFIRM slave sends events to Master and the Master
doesn't confirm the same. Some more class 1
events are generated in DNP3 slave and again
Master requests for class 1 events.
Gap:
RC500 reports only the newly generated events.

4 CLASS 2 DATA DNP3 master requests for class 2 events; DNP3

WITHOUT CONFIRM slave sends events to Master and the Master
does not confirm the same. Some more class 2
events are generated in DNP3 slave and again
Master requests for class 2 events.
Gap:
RC500 reports only the newly-generated events.

5 CLASS 3 DATA DNP3 master requests for class 3 events, DNP3

WITHOUT CONFIRM slave sends events to Master and the Master
does not confirm the same. Some more class 3
