-The balangay was the first wooden boat that was excavated in Southeast Asia.

These
boats were instrumental in the settlement of Austronesian peoples in the
Philippines and the Malay archipelago. It was used for cargo and trading, in which
Butuan, Agusan de Norte, Philippines was a central trading port.

Why is it called balangay?

When the first Spaniards arrived in the 16th century, they found the Filipinos
living in well-organized independent villages called barangays. The name barangay
originated from balangay, the Austronesian word for “sailboat”.

-A torogan (lit. 'resting place' or 'sleeping place') is a traditional ancestral

house built by the Maranao people of Lanao, Mindanao, Philippines for the nobility.
[1] A torogan was a symbol of high social status. Such a residence was once a home
to a sultan or datu in the Maranao community. Nowadays, concrete houses are found
all over Maranaw communities, but there remain torogans a hundred years old. The
best-known are in Dayawan and Marawi City, and around Lake Lanao.
What is the function of torogan?
Apart from housing the sultan and his family members, the torogan also functions as
venue for community affairs, planning, and decision-making thus making it a symbol
of rank, status and influence of its owner (Madale 1996)
Torogan is a traditional house of the Maranaos. Made of hard woods with post made
up of whole tree-trunks and are known for intricately carved panolong (beam-ends)
with okir designs, the torogan was once a symbol of high social status.

-The Panolong is a house ornament fashioned by the Maranao people. It is a carved

beam that protrudes in the front of the house and styled with okir motif. The shape
of the panolong is an architectural translation of a "prow" meaning the protruding
part in the front of a ship.
The panolong is the most dominant and distinct feature of the torogan. Apart from
decorating the sultan's residence, a panolong can also be used to adorn other
ritual and important Maranao structures such as the lamin, mosques, and boats.
These are not found in ordinary houses in a community as they symbolize power, rank
and leadership. The panolong is a beam-end or a prow carved with a combination of
floral and naga (dragon) designs.
