Rules of the " KART LOW COST " challenge Evolution as of March 07, 2018
*Translated using deepl.com
1.1 Objectives
This challenge has three main objectives that guide its conduct:
First objective: to allow students to design and build their kart according to the specifications of the
rules of the challenge.
Second objective: to allow a meeting between students of different nationalities and from different
universities to share their experiences, good practices and moments of conviviality.
Third objective: to develop the spirit of competition, technical and transversal skills (communication,
discipline, etc.), sports skills, while not forgetting fair play.
1.2 Participants
The challenge is open to all higher technological training structures of the European Union and
associated countries: training institutes for higher technicians, engineering schools and engineering
faculties.
1.3 Principles
The aim is for students to design and build a low-cost kart with a combustion engine and/or an
electric motor at low cost. Only karts that are actually designed and built by the students and which
meet the specifications of these rules.
The costs of the karts must not exceed a limit which is specified below. In order to be able to
compare costs in euros (€) are exclusive of taxes, as these may vary from one country to another.
4 Chassis
- Required welded tubular structure of free cross-section must be designed by the students: It is not
allowed to use a commercial frame;
- The manufacturing of the frame can be done by a company, by the technicians of the training
structure or by the students;
- The wheelbase must be between 1010 and 1080 mm;
- The tracks must measure at least 2/3 of the wheelbase;
- A rigid floor must be in place from the centre cross member to the front of the chassis;
7 Suspensions
- Any suspension system is forbidden;
8 Engine
- The engine brand is free;
- Any type of engine is allowed;
- The maximum power of the kart is limited to 15 kW;
- The fuel tank of the plastic go-kart must have a maximum capacity of 8.5 litres;
- Any engine preparation is allowed;
- The sound level of the internal combustion engines is limited to 100 dB at 1 meter.
- For the electric kart, the maximum power of the engine will be 15kW;
9 Bodywork
- Front and side bumpers are mandatory;
- The bodywork can be made from one piece (your choice);
- The front and side bumpers are fixed to at least two anchor points on each metal support;
- Edges and corners must have a radius of at least 5 mm;
- Metallic bodywork is prohibited.
10 Tires
- The 4 tires must be of the same brand (of your choice) and the same type (slick);
- Hardness imposed: CIK Hard;
- Rain tires are not allowed;
- Two sets of tires (maximum) are allowed for the race.
12.1 Organizer
Each year a training centre from a different country is in charge of organizing the challenge.
It is the country that won the combined ranking of the year N-1 that is responsible for finding the
training centre for the year N. In the same way, the winning training centre is in charge of the
promotion of the challenge, helped by the organizer and the training centres that traditionally
participate in the challenge.
12.2 Place and date of the challenge
The organizer is obliged to consult with other potential participants in order to decide on the place
and dates of the competition by December 15 of the year N-1 at the latest. The organizer advertises
the competition and asks the potential participants to confirm their participation at the latest on
February 15 of the year N.
It is particularly important to ensure the safety of the participants, therefore the organizer must
choose a suitable place and put in place all means to ensure the safety of the pilots (tires, blocks
etc.).
12.3 Logistics
12.3.1 Storage and preparation of karts before the competition
The organizer must ensure that the participants' karts can be stored in a safe place for a maximum of
48 hours before the start of the competition.
Competitors must have the possibility to adjust their karts 24 hours before the start of the
competition.
It is therefore essential to provide a sheltered area or a sufficiently large area to set up a soft shelter
that each participating team can bring.
12.3.2 Accommodation of the participants
The organizer must provide accommodation for the students at a small participation fee.
Accompanying professors may be provided with free accommodation by the organizer or will bear
the cost of hotel expenses.
12.3.3 Meals
Only the lunch on the day of the competition and the festive meal are entirely at the expense of the
organizer. The other meals are either free of charge or payable by the participants, at the organizer's
discretion.
It is important to organize a festive evening gathering students and teachers, ideally after the
competition. If the calendar does not allow for it to be organized after the competition, this festive
evening will be scheduled the day before the competition.
12.4 Participants
Only teams that are accompanied by at least one teacher are allowed to participate in this challenge.
In order to respect this point of the rules in case of last minute failure of a teacher, it is
recommended to register at least two teachers.
IMPORTANT: the file in digital format (PDF) must be submitted to the organizer at least 4 weeks
before the competition, and the organizer is responsible for distributing it to the members of the
jury upon reception, who will fill in the evaluation grid attached to the present rules and send its
evaluation to the organizer at least 3 weeks before the date of the competition. The organizer
publishes the list of participating teams.
If one of these points is not respected by a training centre, the latter is immediately informed and
has one week to propose an alternative solution. The jury will then make a final decision at least 12
days before the start of the competition.
The decisions of the jury must be adopted by a unanimous vote minus one. If the decision cannot be
made in this way, then the jury will not take into account the opinions of the training centres that do
not meet the provisions of these rules.
