Fault Modeling and Simulation for More-Electric Aircraft Systems

Chris Mak, Srikanthan Sridharan, Yue Cao, Philip T. Krein Electrical Engineering, Univ. of Illinois

Fundamental questions and how this effort integrates with the rest of POETS?
 Is there a complete model to understand the coupling between energy domains in electrical, thermal, hydraulic,
mechanical, and pneumatic power systems, in modern aircraft systems?
 How to achieve modularity, scalability, and multi-fidelity for aircraft component models in a system toolbox?
 With increasing integrated modeling systems, it is essential to optimize the multi-objective outcome
 Trade studies, energy budget analysis, efficiency analysis, system architecture evaluation, and fault analysis

Vision: Faster-than-real-time model toolbox to evaluate multi-domain subsystems of more-electric aircrafts

Methodology and Approaches

 Components modeled: Synchronous generator, battery, rectifier,
inverter, transformer, electric loads, drives and actuators

 Simulation acceleration methods:

- Synchronously rotating d-q reference frame used in ac system
- Singular perturbation approach for synchronous generator
- Electrical circuit model (instead of electrochemical model) for battery
- Averaged models (instead of switched models) for power converters
- Lump model method for electrical loads

Main Results
 Sample simulation - mission duration: 19,060 seconds, and elapsed simulation time: 4,730 seconds
