This atlas intended to serve as a companion to the

Student's History of
England.' My original intention was to select such of the maps in the
'
Public Schools Historical Atlas,' edited by Mr. Colbeck, as more strictly con-
cerned English history. It soon, however, appeared that more needed to be
done. In the first place many additional maps were required to make the
atlas satisfactory, and in the second place many of the maps there published
appeared to me to require correction. Most of the maps now given are, how-
ever, taken from that source, though they have received more or less altera-
tion. have especially to thank Mr. James Gairdner for recasting his

map France in 1429 (No. 17). On all matters relating to the Welsh border
of
I have been guided by the advice of Professor Tout, and in the plans of
the Battles of Bannockburn, Cre9y and Agincourt, by that of Mr. J. E.
Morris, of Bedford Grammar School. In the case of Bannockburn, I have
been helped by the map in Sir E. E. Maxwell's Eobert the Bruce,' and in
'
that of Agincourt, by the one in Sir James Ramsay's Lancaster and York.'
'
With regard to the maps borrowed with the permission of the proprietors
from other sources, I have to thank the Society for Promoting Christian
'
Knowledge, for England in 550 (No. 3), taken from Mr. Grant Allen's Saxon

of the English People,' and 'England and France, July 1185' (No. 11),
founded on a map in Miss K. Norgate's England under the Angevin Kings.'
'
Two of the maps of Ireland (Nos. 21 and 24) are taken with the permission of
'
the author from Mr. Bagwell's England and
'
Ireland under the Tudors
'
;
'
Wales, 1485-1603 (No. 20), with a few additions, from Mr. Moberly's 'Early

Tudors ;
'
Central Britain, 1715-1745,' with the addition of Prince Charles
Edward's route, from Morris's Early Hanoverians.'
'
For the plans of the
battles of the Nile (No. 82), of Copenhagen (No. 83) and Trafalgar (No. 84),
and for the two maps of the battle of Waterloo (Nos. 86, 87), taken from the
'
atlas to Alison's History of Europe,' I have to thank Messrs. Blackwood.
The map of India in 1804 (No. 54) is taken from one published by the
British Government. It is not in the library of the British Museum, but a
of those who may not have access to the map as originally published. I have
given to the British Museum library the tracing taken for me with the original
colouring, so that it may be consulted there by those interested in the matter.
