Handling any kind of cotton textile product at sea is

continuous hard work.

Cotton fibres are splendidly edible for bacteria. Bacteria

love moisture. Anything used outdoors at sea can get
moist and is difficult to dry.

This means that as soon as you pull it out of the water or

let it get wet when it’s aloft, it starts to rot. You can
measure its lifetime in hours, wet hours. Amongst all the
other things you have to do, you have to dry it as soon as
you can, and never miss doing it.

English has a saying applied to getting paid too well for

something: that’s like getting money for old rope.

This is because old rope that is bit by bit losing its

strength is not a resource, it’s a liability. Using old rope is
courting disaster.

I was once asked to act as skipper on an old wooden

trawler turned yacht whose owner had bought it from a
couple of used car salesmen. Warning bells! We needed
to moor it on a trawler bed alongside a quay so that we
could paint the hull with anti-fouling when the tide went
out. To do this, you put everything heavy along the side of
the deck facing the quay to make the hull lean against the
wall, and you moor it tight against the quay using every
rope you’ve got. I didn’t want to do it this way but the
owner insisted.

In the middle of the night as the tide was falling, some

vessel exceeding the harbor speed limit created a mighty
wave that pushed us against the wall and then sucked the
hull back outwards. Every rope she was moored with just
parted and she laid herself on her side as the tide went
out. As her full weight came onto some submerged metal,
there was a horrible creaking sound from her hull. As the
tide came back in, she filled up with water, topped with
black oil from the bilges.

That’s what half-rotten rope can do for you. How much is

that worth?

I have full sympathy for people who use synthetic

materials in ropes, nets and sails. That way you can go
home as soon as you’ve unloaded your fish, without
having to spend another hour or two dragging wet cotton
or hemp to places where it can dry. And do it again
tomorrow. And the day after that.

That depends entirely on what you're using it for.

However, from a VERY general perspective:

Advantages

~ It can easily be woven to different thread counts, so you

can make fabrics that are soft and drapey, or smooth and
stiff.

~ It can also be knitted to create jersey fabrics that are

warmer than the woven cottons, so it's wearable in a
variety of weather conditions, from very hot to slightly
warm.

~ As clothing and bedding, it allows the skin to breathe so

you're less likely to get hot and sweaty in warm weather.

~ Sensitive skin is often less Reading

Well, it depends a it on what it is compared to. Cotton has

decent staple for a natural fiber. Its,nit as good as wool
for flame resistance but better than synthetics. It also has
better hand than wool. It doesn't itch. And it breathes
really well so it is actually one I f the most wearable fibers.
However it's staple is set; a a synthetic can be extruded
at nearly any diameter / length you could require. It also
does not hold moisture like cotton so it can be much
better as gym shorts or sports bras, but not nearly as
good as a cotton searsucker in terms of comfort.

Cotton nets would be very heavy when wet as they would

absorb water. They would also be less strong, abrade
fairly easily and rot quickly. Nylon nets are lighter and
stronger.

Related Why are nylon ropes used in fishing nets?

Mainly because of high work of rupture it is capable of
withstanding sudden shocks and also return to its original
shape after stretching because of its high elasticity.
Therefore whenever the net is pulled back from water ,
the fibre is capable of withstand that sudden shock and
also the net is pulled it will maintain its original shape.

Also since its moisture regain is low, it wont absorb water

to make the net heavy. The fibre is quite durable for the
purpose.

RelatedHow do fishermen keep their nylon lines

from tangling?
By far the greatest problem that anglers have with nylon
monofilament lines is tangling that occurs with open-
faced spinning reels. This tangling is caused by line
memory that results in a twist forming a loop as the line is
reeled back on to the reel. In the next cast that occurs,
the loop is caught by the out-going line and frequently a
large tangle results. In order to minimize the likelihood
that this type of tangling occurs, there are several things
the angler can do:

1) Use a line that is very limp. Trilene XL (XL stands for

extra limp) is one ofContinue
these. AReading

Certainly not on the names of the cities New York and

LONdon (as is the popular opinion). Yes its true that the
fabric was invented in new york but this does not has any
etiological bearing on the name of the fabric. The
Wikipedia page on nylon states that the fabric was named
quite arbitrarily by its inventor Dupont. The initial ‘nyl’
being randomly chosen and ‘on’ being suffixed to it as is
the common practice in nomenclature of fabrics e.g.
Rayon, Cotton.

Rayon is called regenerated fibers because the original
raw material cellulose is broken down and then reformed.
Why is nylon considered to be a good material for making
fishing nets? Being a strong and lightweight material, it is
used for making fishing net.

RelatedWhy do you think cotton is not suitable

material for making a fishing line?
Before the advent of monofilament, fishing lines were
braided cotton and had to be stripped from reels, washed
and dried, then inspected for damage or wear after a day
of fishing, especially in salt water.

Monofilament gave less than expert fishermen the same

advantage that fiberglass did.
