I chose this topic because:

 Marriage is an institution that has been for centuries around the world, there are so
many different traditions around the world, and all of them are based on social,
religious, and civil law that has been passed over generations.
 Love is the energy that makes us be together, create families, keep traditions, and build
new ones therefore there are many differences and similarities.
 Everywhere in the world people look for love and sometimes the way they engage, and
marriage can be done in different ways corresponding to a country and its culture,
sometimes new generations challenged traditional practices and they want to do
something new and different.
 Even though this world is changing we find many engagement and wedding traditions
that should not exist at this time, and we disagree with them but still persist
Love and marriage are the end goal… How we get there is what makes it such an interesting
and diverse topic to study in the world. For that reason, we want to present you with some
examples of some unique traditions from different countries.

How do Colombians propose?

in my country, we have a very classic marriage custom way to propose. The groom-to-be must have the
approval of the father of his girlfriend before proposing to his daughter. This tradition is still current;
however, many couples decide to live together before getting married.

The candle ceremony takes place during the wedding ceremony and after the couple exchanges their
rings. Each of the partners carries a candle and lights it. The couple will then extinguish their individual
candles and take the third candle.
This tradition symbolizes how the couple is now a team by lighting a candle together and disposing of
their individual candles. Many couples keep the candle they lit together as a keepsake and a reminde

How the Japanese propose:

The ceremony where the couple gets formally engaged is called yuino and consists of a meeting
between both families. During this gathering, they exchange 9 gifts wrapped in rice paper. These
symbolize their feelings and good intentions for the prospective marriage.

How Irish Propose:

The Irish tradition is all about a ring called Claddagh, which has a heart with a crown motif held by 2
clasped hands. This is a piece of jewelry that is full of symbolism, with the heart pointing away from the
heart of the recipient before the wedding, which is later switched to point inward to the heart after the
marriage.
How Thailand men propose

In Thai culture, it’s customary for the bride-to-be to get a special gift known as thong mun or “gold
engagement.” This refers to jewelry that a groom must give to the intended bride, which is made of 24-
carat gold.
