DEFINITION.

It’s the fact or condition in which one can not live without a particular substance or activity.

TYPES OF ADDICTION.

1.Drug Abuse. It refers to the use of certain chemicals for the purpose of creating pleasurable effects on
the brain. Examples of harmful drugs are cocaine, heroine etc.

EFFECTS OF DRUG ABUSE.

Nausea and abdominal pain.

*Weight loss.

*Mental confusion and brain damage.

*Stroke.

Examples of drug abuse.

*Driving while on drugs.

*Using dirty needles to treat patients.

*Having unprotected sex.

*Stealing to support a drug habit.

2)Smoking. This is practice of burning tobacco and injesting the smoke that is produced.

EFFECTS OF SMOKING.

*It causes cancer of the lungs.

*It causes tooth disease and gum problems.

*It causes heart diseases.

*It causes stroke.

2)Alcoholism. It is the inability to control drinking due to both a physical and emotional dependence on
alcohol.

EFFECTS ON ALCOHOLISM ON HEALTH

High blood pressure.


*Heart disease e. g hypertension.

*Stroke.

*Liver disease.

*Cancer of the breast.

*Weakening of the immune system.

HOW TO PREVENT AN ADDICTION.

1)Understand how substance abuse develops.

2)Avoid temptation and peer pressure. Develop healthy friendship by avoiding friends family members,
who pressure to use substances.

3)Seek help from mental illness. Mental illness and substance abuse often go hand In hand. If you are
dealing with a mental illness such as anxiety, depression, or post traumatic stress disorder seek
professional help from a licensed therapist or counselor.

4)Examine the risks factors. Look your family history of mental illness and addiction several studies have
shown that this disease tends to run in the family, can be prevented.

5)Keep a well balanced life, people always tend to drugs and alcohol when something in their life is
missing or not working practicing life stressors and will help you live a balanced and healthy life.
