DIMMER FOR USE WITILA LIGHT SOURCE
TECHNICAL FIELD
“The present disclosure relates to dimmer for dimming
light emited by a Tight source. In particular, the present
lsclosure relates to a dimmer regulated by a pulse-width
‘modulate signal without turn-on delay
BACKGROUND
Many applications require varying th light inteasity of
semicondctor light source such as ligh-emiting diode
(LED), For instance displays based on LED back-lighting
technology require many LED zones to achieve a high
‘contrat ratio Between bright snd dark images. Each LED
Zone also referred to as LED change canbe sed to achieve
focal dimming and create realistic images.
Dimming may'be achieved using a pulse width modulated
PWM signal to deve a dimming transistor. The pulse wid
‘modulate signal is repeatedly switched betwoen high and
Jow states. Upon roceving a high state at its gate, the
slimming transistor couples the ligt source 0 current
Source, and the light soe emits ight. Upon rovciving @
fow stte at its gate, the dimming transistor decouples the
Tight source from the eurent source snd the Tight source
Stops ‘emitting Tight, Therefore the dimming. effect is
achioved hy enabling and disabling ofthe dimming tansis-
tor repeatedly’ at sulicontly high frequency, while the
level of dimming is changed by changing the duty eyele of
the PWM sigs.
“Traditionally, the frequency of the PWM signal rmges
between 50 Hz and 960 HZ. However, bettr dimming
performances can be achieved at higher frequencies. For
Instance above 20 Kliz audio noise can be greatly reduced
‘oreliminated. At such high frequencies the trmon deley of
affects the dimming accuracy and linea
based on the measiremeat of the fr
Aelay and subsequent delay compensation lack reliability
‘specially when the PWM signal is set with «high duty
evel.
SUMMARY
Ie ison object ofthe disclosure to adress one o mone of
the above-mentioned limitations,
According to a first aspect of the disclosure, there is
provided a dimmer for dimming Hight emitted by a light
Source, the dimmer comprising 2 regulation switch Tor
regulating a current owing though the Tight source, 2
regulator circuit adapted to provide an electronic parameter
to-contol the regulation switch, where the regulator circuit
comprises a dimmer switch for passing or blocking the
flectronie parameter, and signal generator adapted (0
‘generate plurality of modolated signals configured 10
‘operate the regulator cireuit ina fst phase and in second
pase, where in the fit phase the regulation circuit main-
tains the electronic parameter o a tangt value and wherein
the second phase the registion cir monitors 8 variation
of the electronic parameter and mainiins the electronic
parameter toa predetennined vale.
For instance te light source may be a semiconductor Hight
source such as an LED. The regulation switch may be a
power switch such asa power FET transistor
For example the dimmer switch may be a single-pale
