Hardware Tools
To easily accomplish the different job requirements
in hardware repairs, it is important to have a toolkit
that should contain all the necessary tools. As you
gain experience, you will learn which tools to have
available for different types of jobs.
4 Categories of
Hardware Tools
1.Electro-Static Discharge ( E S D ) Tools

– Static electricity is the sudden flow of friction

between two objects. It can easily be generated
by friction on tile flooring, carpets, hair, clothing
etc. E S D can be controlled by the use of the
following E S D tools.
Anti-static wrist strap
– used to prevent
E S D damage to
computer equipment.
It equalizes the
electrical charge
between you and the
equipment.
Anti-static mat
– used to stand on or
place hardware on to
prevent static
electricity from
building up. It is
slightly conductive.
2. Hand Tools

– an implement used for performing

works using only hands.
Flat head screwdriver

Used to loosen
and tighten
slotted screws.
Philips head screwdriver

Used to loosen
and tighten
crosshead
screws.
Torx screwdriver
Used to loosen or
tighten screws that
have a star-like
depression on the
top, a feature that is
mainly found on
laptop.
Hex driver
- sometimes called a
nut driver, is used to
tighten nuts in the
same way that a
screwdriver tightens
screws. A nut driver
that has 6 sides.
Needle-nose plier

Used to hold
small parts,
also called as
long nose plier.
Wire Cutter

Used to strip
and cut wires.
Tweezers

-used to
manipulate
small parts.
Part Retrieval

-used to retrieve
parts from
location that are
too small for your
hand to fit.
Flashlight
- used to
light up
areas that
you cannot
see well.
3. Cleaning Tools
Lint –free cloth
- used to clean
different
computer
components
without scratching
or leaving debris.
Compressed air
-used to blow away
dust and debris
from different
computer parts
without touching
the components.
Cable Ties
–used to
bundle cable
neatly inside
and outside the
computer.
Parts organizer
-used to hold
screws and small
parts to prevent
them from getting
mixed together.
4. Diagnostic Tools
Loopback Adapter

–used to test the

functionality of
computer ports.
Multimeter
–used to test the
integrity of circuits and
the quality of electricity
in computer
components. Also called
as multi- tester.
Proper Used Of Hand Tools

- properly used of hand tools

makes the works easier, and
that’s the technician does.
Screws
Match screws with proper screwdriver.
Place the tip of the screwdriver on the
head of the screw. To tighten the screw,
turn the screwdriver clockwise; and
counter clockwise to loosen it. Don’t
over stripped the screw, and discard
stripped screws.
Flat head Screwdriver

Use flat screwdriver in

working with slotted
head screw and never
use it as a pry bar.
Philips Screwdriver
Use this screwdriver in a cross-head
screws. Do not use it in different head
screws.
Hex Driver
Use hex driver to loosen and
tighten bolts that have a
hexagonal (six-sided) head.
Do not over tighten the
screws so as not to be
stripped.
CAUTION: Some tools like screwdriver
are magnetized, when working with
electronic devices, make sure that the
tools you are using are not magnetized
because it will damage the computer
components.
Part retriever, Needle-nose pliers, or
tweezers

These hand tools are used to

place and retrieve parts that
may be hard to reach with your
fingers. Be cautious of using it
because this may scratch or hit
the computer components.
CAUTION: Pencils should not be used
inside the computer to change the
setting of switches or to pry off
jumpers. The pencil lead can act as a
conductor and may damage the
computer components.
Proper Use of
Cleaning Materials
Computer Cases and Monitors
Clean computer cases and the outside
of monitors with a mild cleaning
solution on a damp, lint-free cloth. If any
water drips inside the case, allow
enough time for the liquid to dry before
powering on the computer.
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Screens

Harsh chemicals may damage the

coating of the screen, so do not
use ammoniated glass cleaners or
any other solution on an LCD
screen unless the cleaner is
specifically designed for the
purpose.
CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) Screens
To clean the screens of CRT monitors,
dampen a soft, clean, lint-free cloth with
distilled water and wipe the screen from
top to bottom. Then use a soft, dry cloth
to wipe the screen and remove any
streaking after you have cleaned the
monitor.
Component Contacts
Clean the contacts on components
with isopropyl alcohol. Do not use
rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol
contains impurities that can
damage contacts.
Keyboard
Clean a desktop keyboard with
compressed air or a small, hand-held
vacuum cleaner with a brush
attachment. Do use the standard
vacuum cleaner inside the computer;
use only the one that is specifically
designed for computer components.
Mouse
Use a glass cleaner and a soft cloth to
clean the outside of the mouse. Do not
spray glass cleaner directly on the mouse.
If cleaning a ball mouse, you can remove
the ball and clean it with a glass cleaner
and a soft cloth. Wipe the rollers clean
inside the mouse with the same cloth. Do
not spray any liquids inside the mouse.
PROPER STORAGE OF TOOLS, PARTS, AND EQUIPMENT

Good practices include:

 Parts should be properly stored and labeled.

 Tools should be properly placed on the board and
labeled. Consider drawing the shapes of the tools on the
board so that they always get put back in the same
position.
 Use bins for storing small parts.
 Consider making an individual (or individuals)
responsible for the good maintenance of tools and parts.
