1. For the connection shown, let a= ∈¿, b= ∈¿, c= ∈,d =1 ∈¿
16 16 4 2

D= ∈,m=n= ∈¿ . The material is AISI C1040, annealed. (a) For a load of 7500 lb.,

compute the various tensile, compressive, and shear stresses. Determine the factor of
safety based on (b) ultimate strength, (c) yield strengths. For AISI C 1040: σ y = 47 ksi, σu =
79 ksi, Ƭy = 0.6 σy, Ƭu = 0.6 σu.

Variable Loads

1. The maximum pressure of air in a 20-in. cylinder (double-acting air compressor)

is 125 psig. What should be the diameter of the piston rod if it is made of AISI 3140, OQT at
1000 F, and if there are no stress raisers and no column action? Let N = 1.75; indefinite life
desired. How does your answer compare with that obtained for 4?

For AISI 3140, OQT 1000 F

Su = 153 ksi
Sy = 134 ksi
Sn = 0.5 Su

2. A round shaft, made of cold-finished AISI 1020 steel, is subjected to a variable torque
whose maximum value is 6283 in-lb. For N =1.5 on the Soderberg criterion, determine the
diameter if (a) the torque is reversed, (b) the torque varies from zero to a maximum, (c) the
torque varies from 3141 in-lb to maximum.
For AISI 1020, cold-finished
Su = 78 ksi
Sy = 66 ksi
Sn = 0.5 Su
Shafting

1. The torsional deflection of a SAE 1040 steel shaft is 0.8 0 in a length of ½ m. the shear
stress is 69 MPa. Compute the diameter of the shaft in millimeter. Steel modulus of
elasticity is 79, 300 MPa.
2. A 2 in solid shaft is driven by a 36-in, gear and transmits power at 120 rpm. If allowable
shearing stress is 12 ksi, what horsepower can be transmitted?
